Cades Cove is a broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains and is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. It offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in the park. Large numbers of white-tailed deer are frequently seen, and sightings of cades cove black bears, coyote, ground hog, turkey, raccoon, skunk, and other animals are also possible.
    Touring the Cove
Vehicle-free access along the Cades Cove Loop Road takes place each Wednesday, from May 3 through September 27, 2023. On these days, the 11-mile loop can be enjoyed on foot or bicycle. There is always a great opportunity to see Cades Cove Black Bears!
An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering motorists the opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area's trails. Traffic is heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to other visitors and use pullouts when stopping to enjoy the scenery or view wildlife such as Cades Cove Black Bears.
An inexpensive self-guiding tour booklet available at the entrance to the road provides a map and information about the cove.
The valley has a rich history. For hundreds of years Cherokee Indians hunted in Cades Cove but archeologists have found no evidence of major settlements. The first Europeans settled in the cove sometime between 1818 and 1821. By 1830 the population of the area had already swelled to 271. Cades Cove offers the widest variety of historic buildings of any area in the national park.
Scattered along the loop road are three churches, a working gristmill, barns, log houses, and many other faithfully restored eighteenth and nineteenth century structures. Pick up the self-guiding tour booklet available at the entrance to the loop road for information about the buildings you'll see in the cove and the people who lived here. Let us know if you have any questions and we hope to bring you back soon to see more Cades Cove Black Bears!

That would be a great way to see all the beauty of Cades Cove! No cars, just quiet and breathtaking views! Electric bikes would make it even better. My sister and I found the Pearl Harbor tree last year. It’s always the highlight of our trip to see a bear. Those last four were so cute! What great memories with your daughter. ❤️

Now this is right up our alley! Best time to see the wildlife is the mornings or evenings. I enjoyed this video so much. What a treat to see Momma bear playing with her cubs. Most of the time she is so busy smelling & on alert for danger she can’t afford to relax. Just like the big guy/girl you seen earlier on Hyatt Road who was smelling all around the field & road. They are on alert most of the time. I could watch those bears everyday of the week & twice on Sunday if the Good Lord is willing! I never knew how passionate I could become photographing those beautiful animals. Thank you so much for sharing Cade’s Cove on bikes with us! 🙏

I've been many times over the years. First time I went was back in the 80's there used to be 1,000's of DEER EVERYWHERE. Now I'm lucky if I see 10 in one day. WHERE did all the deer go? Some say they were eaten by bears. I'm sure bears did eat some, but that many? NOT LIKELY My guess is rangers & other folk ended up killing them off.

You know, through my eyes, it just does not get any better than that! Looks like you went later in the day & had two great bear experiences…..when you can have a non invasive, up close experience like that one on Hyatt you are just at the right place at the right time….we live for those moments & have had our fair share of them; always a Blessing….and the cub experience was right out in the open where you could really see those little guys….man there just can be nothing in town that can possibly be better than that…..you are living the dream my brother in Christ….Amazing Grace it is…..Blessing well beyond anything we deserve but we have them to hold anyway….thanks for the ride🙏🏻

Ryan, thanks for sharing. I have never done the bike ride when I have been up there. It seems so peaceful and quiet without all the traffic and the "bear/wildlife" jams. Looks like you can enjoy it a lot more and relax this way. Also, I can never find where you pull over to walk to the Pearl Harbor tree. I miss it every time. Can you give me any suggestions so I won't miss it if I ever get back up that way? I saw the rock there but I seem to still miss it. There is also suppose to be a hidden pond, Gourdy Pond, I think it's called. I can't ever find it either. Do you know of any other areas where the leaves are changing? Or maybe you can do a fall foliage video. I sent you an email asking you about the fall foliage. I really enjoyed this video. Great job, as usual.👏👍👍

From nps.gov website “Federal law requires a permit for all commercial filming, no matter the size of the crew or the type of equipment. This includes individuals or small groups that don’t use much equipment, but generate revenue by posting footage on websites, such as TH-cam and TikTok. The primary focus of the NPS, however, is on commercial filming that has the potential to impact park resources and visitors beyond what occurs from normal visitor use of park areas.” Unlikely they will bother at all, a father biking with his daughter.
