    The subtlety in this episode was top notch, from the misty eyed look of burnt oak after his last line, the stuff going on between bright mac and granny smith when pear butter was confronting grand pear, and the lines unsaid by grand pear when he is talking to the apple siblings. So good.

    9:55 ah, but I can explain why Bright Macintosh and Pear Butter are able to talk despite being babies at that point by referring you to Rugrats and Arthur logic (more the latter) where the babies speak their own language that only they can understand yet to them sound like adult voices

  • @TBTabby
    @TBTabby 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Too often posthumous characters don't get any development beyond "they're dead and it's sad."
    It was nice to see Bright Mac and Pear Butter being portrayed as actual personalities, and it was all handled very well. This is definitely one of those episodes to show the people who can't understand why adults like a show for little girls.

      Even with the rougher first two seasons, there was still writing a cut above most modern kids cartoons.
      That quality of writing and animation also keeps increasing, as does the quality of treatment of male characters too. (And that last point was my biggest complaint about the first two seasons.)

  • @BBBHuey

    9:50 It should be reminded that the foal part (like everything else about the Apple sibling's parents) was told in flashback. And that particular scene was told by Golden Delicious, so it may not be exactly how she remembered it (let alone if she was there to see it happen at all).

  • @daltonhall5888

    Yeah I'm actually kind of glad they didn't go out and explain their deaths, that would be just too depressing I think and I really do prefer the more subtle hints that yep, their dead. And I am just a sucker for romantics, so this gets a A+ from me.

    I loved this episode,it was so beautiful and sweet. Pear butter and bright mac characters are amazing. As they grow up and build up there relationship, just pulled my heart strings. The characters,the music, and story line was amazing, I hope for more episodes like this.

    11:32 I would guess the was because Granny saw how hurt Pear Butter was about not being able to speak with her Pear family anymore because Grand Pear pretty much exiled her for her choice and so Granny didn't want anypony to mention the Pears for Buttercup's sake.
    Or it could be that when Applejack says "so upset she can't even talk" it could mean sadness, likely because of the fact Pear Butter never got to reconcile with her father before she died

    • @Cookie-mc4us
      @Cookie-mc4us 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also think that Granny would have had a hard time talking about Pear Butter because Pear Butter chose the apples over her own family. And after that Pear Butter would have been like a daughter to Granny, also Granny wouldn’t have Apple Jack, Apple Bloom, and Big Mac without Pear Butter. So their should be no doubt that seeing pear products reminds her of how close she grew to Pear Butter and Pear Butters sacrifices for her son and future children. Maybe the jam doesn’t remind Granny of her terrible feud with Grand Pear but her adopted and deceased daughter.

    Ok but in all seriousness this episode hit home for me, as the oldest of 4 who's parents also have passed away I actually started crying because of the similarities. Its hard for me to give a balanced review on this episode BECAUSE of how much it reminds me of my own life. I loved the music and loved the play on words, thought Grand Pear was the sweetest old man-er, pony and just: Yes. Yes to everything.
    I think the only thing possibly negative I'd have for the episode is that I really want more. I want to know more about AJ's parents I want to see more. 22 minutes was not enough and I wish this could have been a 2 parter.

    Fun fact: Romeo is suppose to be at least in his 20s while Juliette is 13. XVI Century!

    • @TrickyFox93
      @TrickyFox93  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hm, well Juliette's Age is stated in the play itself, not sure about Romeo though, but I'm sure he was around the same age :D

    • @GreycatRademenes
      @GreycatRademenes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually remember it from some sort of study on R&J, where the person doing the analysis said that Romeo was not only much older than Julliette but he also already had several romances. Including courting (or wanting to court) on the party where he first saw Julliette.

    • @TrickyFox93
      @TrickyFox93  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      like i said, i think his age is never mentioned in the play itself. The latter is true though. ;) Romeo is not nearly as perfect as people often think^^

    SO....
    Can we get Patrick Stewart as Starswirl? :P
    ...COME ON IT FITS BETTER THAN SHATNER! :P Shatner works as Grand Pear since we saw how well done the character is, I can see someone who has some connection to Delancie's work on Star Trek the Next Generations as the wizard :P

  • @connorthompson8376
    @connorthompson8376 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree with Keyframe about Shatner. When I heard he'd voice a character, I thought it would we Starswirl, and that he'd face off with Discord and we'd get history and characterization in that direction. But he honestly did a terrific job with a character which actually turns out to be very important, and demonstrates his skill incredibly. And I hope we see more of Grand Pear in the future.

    When I first watched this episode, I was like, okay, we're gonna get a hint about Applejack's parents. But, nope! WE FLAT OUT GOT HER PARENTS AND OH MY CLOVER STARSWRIL. YOU ANSWERED MY PRAYERS!!
    Ever since I was first introduced to Applejack's siblings, I've been wanting to know for the past seven seasons what had happened to them. And though that this is still unknown, I give this episode the number one spot on my top ten season seven episodes list for the time being.
    This episode opened a lot of windows for a lot of bronies and pegasisters to open up new head canons. And sadly watch old ones die.
    The song was down right my favorite part. The lyrics, the transitions from love scene to love scene were beautiful, and I actually cried at the end.
    Pear Butter's dad was a lot like my own. So, I can definitely sympathize with her.
    And also, Felicia Day is my LIFE!!!

  • @doujinloverXD

    I loved the episode, though I do see Grandpear more at fault then Granny by a large margin. Mostly because the Apple's founded Ponyville so another farm opening next door as a sort of challenge and the owner constantly going out of his way to outdo granny is just plain disrespectful. But whatever and I didn't realize the resemblance between Buttercup and Sugarbelle wow.
    I hope someday I can do a review with you Mr.Fox, also glad to see a happy Keyframe, I always like seeing her in good spirits.

    • @hariman7727
      @hariman7727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grand Pear pretty much admits that "I should've never left" in the episode, so it's definitely more Grand Pear than Granny Smith.
      Not wholly his fault, but largely though. Granny Smith didn't acknowledge Pear Butter's love for Bright Mac until after the wedding.

    I wonder how the rest of the Pear family reacted to Grand Pear's actions. I believe that some may have agreed and other did not; as a result a huge rift in the Pear family occurred. However, if this is true, then Grand Pear has only himself to blame; Granny Smith is responsible too.

  • @forestgrump4723
    @forestgrump4723 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm assuming since there's STILL pear trees on the other side of the heart tree, it's right at the divide between the two farms and the pear farm is technically still in the pear name and was never sold. That could easily explain why Granny never saw it, why should she herself, the eldest member of the family, be needing to tend to the trees at the edge of the farm? Send the young bucks to the furthest trees. Unless there was a specific problem with a tree over there I could see Granny avoiding the border due to her bitterness toward the pears, and then her regret at how things turned out.

    I personally don't see why people can't come up with an explanation for how Granny Smith didn't know about the two trees: obviously it was Bright Mac and Pear Butter who showed their kids the tree (Applejack did say the tree was "something to remember them by").
    Of course that raises the question of how the kids didn't know their mom was a Pear if they already knew about the tree. But even that's got a fairly easy explanation:
    Bright Mac and Buttercup never told their kids what exactly happened in that area since the memory was too painful, but they did at least tell their kids that the tree was something special to the two of them. But since the Apple siblings grew up believing that something awful happened between Granny Smith and the Pears, they never talked to her about it.
    See? Simple explanation. :)

    • @jlan7844
      @jlan7844 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, that works. Although one of the downsides of being a reviewer is that sometimes you get caught up in thinking that everything has to have an outlandish explanation. I remember a literature professor I had in college who considered it a point of pride for how much he had studied a certain poem, yet when an interpretation that simplified the poem was given the professor was floored. In all of his years he had never considered the simple solution that the writing was literal and not some overblown metaphor for some kind of hidden meaning.

      I remember one Reaction had the person mention that, in an earlier episode of the show (maybe "Bats!"), Granny made an offhand reference to a bat infestation in a western part of the orchard which led to it being abandoned for years. If you take into account the Pear farm being shown on the left side of that double-page spread in Goldie's book to mean it was in the west, as well as a map that SAME reactor displayed which shows that Sweet Apple Acres is north-east or Ponyville... it's not impossible to consider that nobody came to that overgrown grove where the two farms met for a LONG time, like a decade or so. How much those trees could have grown in that time, who can say for sure?

    I'm still not computing how AJ or Mac don't have memories of them. They had to have stuck around long enough for Apple Bloom to be born. And Shatners usage was well done. It's a good sign if you don't recognize a celebrity voice until much later.

    • @elderscrollsswimmer4833
      @elderscrollsswimmer4833 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, how can you tell about Big Mac? It's not like he talks much to begin with. AJ doesn't talk about them either but that doesn't mean she doesn't remember. (at least AJ instanly recognised their names) What they're learning here is the life of their parents before BigMac was born so... and their memories are rather vague at best I think.

    That gag at the start was amazing, I laughed so much.
    As for the ep. IT WAS AMAZING!! I've though of it as a better Romeo and Juliet. As you 2 said. There relation started much sooner and lasted years, making the mirage much more believable. Also I liked how Mayor Mare just rush the last part of the marriage after being interrupted. The whole ep just felt a lot more realistic. Rather ironic coming from a show of pastel color ponies.

    I'd honestly like to see a follow up episode. Maybe Grand Pear hasn't forgiven himself yet, and Luna gives hime the chance in a dream to symbolically apologize to his daughter. And maybe it is suggested that he speak to his family about it. That could lead to a discussion of how Granny's situation developed over time and how she felt about it.

    you know what I think would be a good idea for a future episode? What if the Apple family went to the last known location of their parents only to find out that they are in fact gone (most likely dead, however that doesn't have to be the case) and while they head back home and in the following week or so, the remane 5 could learn about helping someone cope with a permanent loss, or ,even better, Apple Bloom could learn about how to help Applejack through the 5 stages of grief while going through them herself. Now how's that for an episode idea? The only way I think that this episode would be impossible is is A). they are known to have died and the Apples know they aren't coming back or B). if they said that they are on a long, maybe permanent, vacation and everyone is grieving because they don't know if they'll decide to come back.

    The question is are they really dead? Because if u look closely at the dream bubbles in "A royal problem" u can see a dream where baby applejack is seen hold in the hoof of her parents. It couldnt be aj's dream because its not from she couldnt remember that moment. So the only options left would be Big Mac, Granny Smith or AJ's parents themselves. And IF there is a dream bubble because 1 of them is dreaming it means they're still alive.

    Man I cry at this episode and They didn't need to say it out loud that they was dead, you can feel it of many story other pony tell the siblings of their parent past, And it kinda did felt the Romeo and Juliet but more difference, now we dont know how they passed but seeing the end of the episode where they found a tree from their parent was just a tear heart moment as they saying they watching the apple family, I did wish we saw a clip of how the parent raise their kids before they passed and no they didn't need to show it
    But here one problem I did have the tree was there the whole time and yet non of the apple family notice it? i found that hard to believe

    Also, Pear Butter and Bright Mac also get years together, and had a family started. So another major different aspect from Romeo and Juliet.
    Shatner's performance is great in this episode. It's heavily emotional and has the perfect level of subtlety needed for Grand Pear.
    The ONLY way I can think to bring Pear Butter and Bright Mac back would be to have Dr. Whooves and Discord bring them back via the "bring stuff forward in time", with Discord pulling the fogey/end of life Pear Butter and Bright Mac into the past to keep time fine.
    But... as much as I'd like to see that combined with Scootaloo's parents retiring from their demanding jobs and dealing with the fact that Scootaloo is as unknown to them as the Apple Kids are changed over time Pear Butter and Bright Mac, for different reasons... yeah.
    It's probably never going to happen, and the show is probably better for it not happening.
    But an episode where Big Mac and Burnt Oak reminisce about Bright Mac? Yes, writers. Please use that for a future episode!

    Even grand pear return to the Apple family I'm very VERY mad how he rejected her daughter feelings WHAT KIND OF PARENT LEAVE THERE CHILD BEHIND BECAUSE OF A RIVAL BETWEEN A FAMILY ITS A BOND OF PEACE THAT IT REPRESENT BETWEEN PEARS AND APPLES!!!! ( Breath angrily)

    I think i know why noone saw The wedding tree. If you look at where the Pear farm used to be its on the west side of the Apple Family Orchard. And whatelse is in the West Orchard? The Fruit Bats. The Fruit Bats made their home in the West orchard probably because they fed off the pears abandoned on the other side of the fence. As well as the apples within that area. Granny Smith even stated in Apple Family Reunion that they hadn't tended to that field since they moved in. Which implies that the Fruit Bats invaded sometime between Bright Mac and Pear Butter planting the seeds at their wedding and the Start of the series. The invasion of the Fruitbats + Granny Smith's anger at Grand Pear for forcing his daughter to choose between the Pears and the Apples probably made Granny no longer have an unexplained vendetta towards all Pears, but more of resentment towards Grand Pear for how he disowned Pear Butter. Combined probably made wanting to even visit the West Orchards even harder for Granny. Thus explaining why she never saw the wedding Tree in the first place.

    also R/J can also be seen as a commentary on how if men are in control, society falls because there is no marriage and thus no rebirth. its something thats seen alot in wills tragedies. his comedies (back then the term referred to more a more light hearted story) how ever usually ended in a marriage and thus society could go on because the women could speak and we listened to on the same level as men. is juliets father had listened to her, she would not have been set up to marry paris and if the majority of the men in the play had taken a moment to stop being proud idiots and actually though, "hey, why the frick frack are we even fighting?!" the story would have ended better. _but mostly listening to women is a good idea_

    If Tricky is a kitsune and he has 3 tails, doesn't that mean he's over 300 years old? I read that kitsune gain a tail every 100 years until they turn 1,000 and gain their 9th tail, upon which they turn gold and become celestial foxes.

    This was a great review, but there was something that was distracting me in the background. Was that a fan art of your OC sitting next to a one legged renamon? I have no idea why that caught my eye or why it was so distracting but it struck me as strange for some reason.

    Honestly, I think the Perfect Pear has more in common with a Nicholas Sparks novel. I'll give the show points for going out of its comfort zones, unlike Nick who practically writes with a checklist of tropes.

    AUuuugh! They are not dead! Look. Their parents have been gone since they where CHILDREN living on the farm.Then you have apple bloom come too the farm.Lets get this strait. Pears are not allowed on the farm But Apples are. This is the only reason Applejack Bigmack and Applebloom are allowed on the farm.Because they are half Apple. When kids are born from their parents they're sent to the apple farm. So the parents aren't dead.
    They just cant go home.Ever! They ain't dead. PS i love the Renamon poster. I also think you should keep in mind the last name of who Ms Cake was before she became a Cake.
