    I have had my whisperlite for over 20yrs now since I was in boy scouts, it still works great. A great prepper item.

    For gas stoves in cold weather, you need a stove with a hose so that you can turn the canister over. The propane will come off first in cold weather, and the butane left will stay liquid below 26F. A stove with a "generator" type vaporizer running above the burner is a big plus as well, otherwise you have to run inverted until the burner head is hot. The ultralight gas stoves which are simply a stick above the canister are no good in cold weather, but with a hose so you can turn the canister over will let you run the stove at altitude on Mount Everest. You burn the propane off for a couple of seconds until the vaporizer turns red, then flip the canister over so you are burning everything in the canister. You need the butane or isobutane/propane mix type fuels of course--straight butane that you sometimes find is useless in cold weather. This will work to -40F, below which the propane will not sufficiently vaporize, although you can warm the canister against your body if you feel brave (brrrrrr!)

    I have that same stove and have used it only a handful of times so far but it has never let me down, even in really cold weather. It's a bit bulkier than a lot of other "backpacking" stoves but the ability to use many different fuels makes it a much more valuable option. Great video.

    I got my first msr when the more that 10 years ago it still works great. We have a bigger situation now and needed two so I picked up this stove, thanks for the video we’re unpacking today headed out Friday our chief ( he gets mad when we say cook but he’s the most valued part of our crew) loves the simmer on the older stove. So I hope it’s just as good.

    I have a whisperlite and I gotta tell ya, these things make tons of heat and I prefer it over the butane/propane stoves for cooking. Especially for multiple persons. Every year we camp 4-7 days on the Buffalo National River, I can make it all week with two 20 oz fuel bottles. I cook with a 10" steel skillet and it does great even in near freezing conistions. The pocket-rocket type stoves are great for individual water boiling, but they really eat the fuel in windy cold conditions. Great review Ben

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fwaynedavis i agree. with the size of the pocket rocket you might as well just put that one in this kit for even quicker boil ups.

    Very nice gas stove! I like that they include a wind screen. I haven't seen that in any other gas stove. You would most likely have to make you own. Also, the pressurization is a great feature!

    I love the way you set up your stove on a nice layer of dry twigs and leaves, with a strong breeze to make the forest fire really travel. Naughty, naughty! (Viewers: MSR instructions strongly suggest a 4-ft radius cleared of combustibles). 😒 Just sayin'...

    1950s Coleman 2-burner stove using "white gas" and a hand pump for pressure. We had one. Maybe not for backpackers, but old technology to be honored.

    MSR suggests that before connecting the braided SS gas line to the pump, you should lubricate the brass fitting with either the supplied lube or just some saliva. If you don't the O rings in the fitting on the pump will wear out sooner.

    Great video mate. . The beauty about this stove is you can go around the world and have no worries about finding fuel. You can buy them in country.You should let your audience realise that you can’t find gas canisters in a lot of countries I have many different stoves but this is the most versatile. Check out the BioLite camp stove.

    MSR is like the Sherman tank of camp stoves. Finally retired my Whisperlite from the late 1970s. Think this is the one to go with next as we live in subarctic conditions and there ain't gonna be no isopropane going at this time of year when you need quick and efficient heat! Caveat: they still probably don't work well for simmering lol. A real blast furnace. Excellent review.

    For prepping (post-SHTF) : Stay far away from these stoves. I have quite some experience with this particular stove myself. I decided to get rid of it and no longer consider it prep-worthy... The pumps fail so easy, rendering the stove completely useless, instantly. I had THREE pumps fail on me, in about 8 camping trips (!) And they are quite expensive (about €50). If you DO decide to trust your life on it, make sure to prep an infinite amount of pumps as well... Oh yeah, and the special rubber O-rings that this stove needs (in 4 or 5 different sizes). As these fail even quicker... Also I'm still wondering why they call it the Whisperlite. It sounds like a jet engine, to my experience.

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dutch Prepper It actually is quieter than some others I have tried. If the pump fails on this one you can switch to canister which is why the universal is most likely more prep worthy than standalone pump etc.

    • @maltasfinest85
      @maltasfinest85 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Living Survival you wouldn't with the MSR being brand new and in conditions you are testing it in. The stoves performance shines when faced with expedition like conditions.....:)...both great stoves but I'd definitely lean towords the primus line

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      maltasfinest85 how do you figure it's brand new and that I haven't tested it in all sorts of conditions? I typically don't show stuff until it has been fully tested.

    • @maltasfinest85
      @maltasfinest85 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it looks pretty new seeing it dose not have much if any oxidization marks..and unless you were able to perform some off camera testing in -32c conditions id say the stove and its possible potential have not been "fully" tested. I however have had the MSR Whisperlight Universal and XKG and found the pump assembly to be very flimsy compared to the stout craftsmanship of the PRIMUS. I also do not like to idea of having to disassemble the stoves generator assembly to change out the jets as you would on the MSR whisperlight. You have great reviews and feel strongly that you would aggree on all of these points if you had a PRIMUS you could compare to

    hey Ben...the msr line is great but I highly recommend you check out and compare the PRIMUS line up...I have been using the the PRIMUS Omni Lite Titanium for 4 years now and she has never let me down..the primus line IMO far surpassed the craftsmanship of the MSR line...plus with the omni lite there is no changing gas lines from white gas to butane......cheers

    As nice as the pocket rocket is, I think I would enjoy this one much more. Infact this is the one I am saving up to get. My only concern is some of the reviews state it breaks a lot and you should carry extra parts. How do you feel about that? Thanks for the awesome review Ben! ~Dawn

    Thanks Ben... Wow, it takes a lot of patience to do a video on this stove, as somewhat complicated as it is. Well Done! Who is this stove for? I think everybody. While I would not recommend it in a "Get Home Kit" where time is of the essence (and an alcohol stove might shine brighter), I can see this for camping, long-term backpacking, and even in a bug-out scenario (where multi-fuel capabilities really shine). In the bug-out we are looking for fuels to use... and we never know what we might run across. Well done, sir... another great video review! Ya'll should subscribe to this channel!

      Yea totally there great stoves just not at good as they used to be. A little mod thats not really recommended but really makes it universal is that you can burn alcohol.what you would need is a spare jet which you could get from the service kit and widen it with a small drill bit, sort of trial and error but start off small and work your way up minimaly . Additionally you can get a butane adapter and with the canister jet burn butane
