Yup, I was teaching the fundamentals more than a decade...started out with cones, cylinders, spheres, and cubes, how to render them to completion, and also how to add textures to them. Gradually I had my classes work their way up to more complex objects with the solid foundation they learned. They hated it, but I told them the exact same thing you said. You can't draw/paint and design all of the fancy stuff without the proper foundation skills.

I was born in 81 and let me tell you that childhood during this era was amazing for most of us, people were so much happier and the life experience was just all around better than the depressing environment kids have to cope with now. I wish it was still like that today!!

I've been coming off of about a decade of artist's block and it's been a year of experimentation. Not only did I get back to the basics of shapes and gestures, but I decided to start toying with alcohol markers, watercolors and, most recently, sketching in ballpoint pen. And, compared to the sketches I was doing before the block hit, I'm making things I actually like. There is no better feeling. A big help has been watching your videos, which have been a powerful motivator to practice, using any tips and tricks given. So thank you for that.

Knowing what you want really does help for beginners and veterans. As a seasond beginner, I have been wanting to craft a style that is simple, but can look really good in movement. Mike Mignola from Hellboy and Satoshi Matsurra have been amazing to study from. Because both have awesome creature designs in a different style.

Keep doing what you’re doing. I’ve always wanted to learn how to draw. I could always “see” cool stuff in my head, but growing up, my parents couldn’t afford good teachers so they would settle on Christmas/ birthday gifts of cool supplies. I always appreciated them but never felt like I could use them to the fullest extent. When I got older, I pursued art in college hoping to get good direction only to have professors literally laugh in my face at my work despite my efforts. It’s disheartening. Seeing your videos makes drawing seem attainable no matter skill level. That’s huge for folks like me that may not have had a decent direction to channel their creativity.

I've been drawing almost all my life, but haven't done it in years (I've done a bunch of writing and other crafts instead). A video of yours about using random shapes to make creatures helped draw me back in. I want to start improving but I don't know where to start with a (reasonable) goal.

I'm a self taught hobby artist (although that just means I did not have a dedicated teacher) and every rut I hit on my journey has been related to what you're talking about. I still run into these problems. Some days I cant for the life of me decide what to draw. When I don't have a vision my art suffers. The vision is what you referred to as thinking in 3D. I also still need reference images and a poor reference (with regard to lighting or blurriness) causes my art to suffer. I have hit plateaus in my technique and the only way out is to glean from better artists then practice fail upwards. Once people started asking for prints or commissions of my art I knew I hit a level of artistry that I desired, related to your step of feedback. I'm still so far from the level I want to be but the journey is part of the fun!

I’ve always loved art and drawing people is what I’m drawn to. Never felt confident to even try but after watching a few people on TH-cam and a lot of life events that have shown me I only have now, I have made a few bare bones attempts at poses for larger pieces. Thanks for being part of those that have been an encouraging voice.

Man, listening to you makes me nostalgic. These are great memories! And just these days I had a taste for looking at 90's horror and their retro vibe for my horror illustration book. These are wonderful times and memories for us to live in today and for us to go back in time through our memories and for us to relive those memories again. It's great! I love your Cthulhu monsters. Great pencils.

My favorite step is step nr. 3, the daily routine! I'm trying to improve my art from "programmer art" level to something decent so I can finish my game, and daily practice seems to be having an effect! I quit art when I was 11 to pursue programming because I wanted to make games, but later I discovered how stupid that was! So I'm correcting it now, 20 years later! I'm never gonna be good, but if I can get to decent and I can visualize and create stuff, then I'l be happy :')

I just joined your discord channel! I'm so happy i found your video, i watched a few of them and they were very helpful. I used to draw a lot more but eventually started sculpting with clay and i think i really found my medium.
The thing is i always have a million ideas in my head for my sculptures and I'd love to sketch them out to be able to stick to my idea/plan because otherwise i get lost in my creativity and i lose my focus thinking about all the possibilities.. I think that if i can improve my sketching/drawing skills it would help me out to draw out my ideas and future projet while i focus on one.
Thank you so much for sharing!

I fall into the 'noob' category, however, art has always been something that I continuously came back to - whether it was painting or drawing, both traditionally and digitally.
I scribble a lot, sometimes I just do abstract art and even if it doesn't always go the way I want, even if I fail a lot, don't get too far or even give up sometimes - I always enjoy the process and time I put into it.
Your videos help so much, if anything they are sort of a meditation that I can listen to while scribbling away on paper :)
I have a sketchbook I'm slowly filling up, all while following your videos, and I always come back to a few pages of 'thumbnail' sketches you instructed me to do, I just loved those :D
So, thank you for all your lessons, advice, encouragement and also for sharing your incredible inspiration and creations with the rest of us :)
I love your work, and I'm always excited for a new video! Cheers and stay awesome!

Video/ lesson idea: how do we make our own character when we already have an idea for it? Like we have a base idea, but we don't know how to elevate it to reality in a drawing?

Hello, I have huge problems with anatomy or better yet I don't know where to look for reliable sources (lizards, birds, etc.). Are there any sources I can look at or should I just look at drawings from others in this direction? Until now I thought it was a bad idea, but I couldn't find any dissect pictures anywhere on the internet to these topics... Should I just join the discord and ask again or can someone answer my question off the cuff?

Bonjour, est il possible d'obtenir un rendu comme le votre avec du fusain , avec des petits dessins ?? J'aime le crayon mais le fusain donne des valeurs plus interessantes et des contraste plus puissant , merci pour votre reponse

Sadly i believe in Talent. And there are sooo many examples that its real. Like a 11 years old drawing things that looks like god made it. One thing you should have added is the FACT that not everyone can become good at art. Only the truly exceptionell can reach god hod.
