    I love the work you've put into this video. All such great ways of reframing the way we think about our shopping cycles. For myself, after I went through a closet purge several years ago and really began thinking about sustainability in fashion, it has changed how I think about new purchases. I had learned that donating to thrift stores and charities doesn't necessarily resolve the environmental impact on our planet. At my local women's shelter, if people didn't take the clothing donated, it would often be passed on to thrift stores or sometimes thrown in the garbage just because they don't have that storage space. I did some reselling, and it takes a while to move items out of my closet. I remind myself of the hassle and stress from the process, and it usually stops me from wanting things. There's a fashion blogger that is this a woman in her mid-60's, and she made a suggestion about how when we choose garments and styles, they should look and feel good in your 20's and all the way into her age. The quality of the fabrics should be good that they can be altered and mended to last. She has pieces in her closet now that are from her teenage years, and some she's definitely altered or changed, but I thought that was so cool! So sometimes I also do that trick in my head to avoid purchasing trendy pieces, I think "Would I want to wear this when I'm 30, 40, 50, 60?" haha!

      Thank you so much! Oh I love that attitude - that's a great way to think about adding new things to your wardrobe. Funnily enough, I was talking to my husband about a pair of running shorts that I was wearing to go on my walk yesterday. I bought them when I was 17 (I'm now 32), and they still look fantastic, and fit! xx

    After your recent video about this topic I have been thinking more about my own shopping habits. I've concluded that I have a really complicated issue with it because the reason I shop is multifaceted. I shop a LOT because: I love beautiful clothes. I get out of the house (I'm a Mom/Mum and have been home 29 years!) I'm in mid-life trying to figure out what works. I tend to buy on sale and end up with a bunch of pieces that don't work together so I am always trying to patch the holes. I don't have just one style. I cycle through phases of bohemian/hippy, frilly and feminine, super classic/oxford/Ralph Lauren, vintage and back again. Midlife adds the complication of fluctuating weight and changing silhouette. It adds the constant question which I brought up previously of what is age appropriate. Because I've been home forever and we moved right after I had kids shopping has become my pseudo-social life. It's fun to eaves drop (people have the most hilarious fitting room dialogues!) I like to people watch. I could go on, but it's hard to curb something that is so encompassing! Anyway, it's complicated but these videos are helpful. I think I need to browse LESS. I love ebay but it is dangerous!! I do need to give myself a budget and when it's spent walk away from the endless browsing.

    • @mademoisellejaime
      @mademoisellejaime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's interesting isn't it? Analysing the reasons behind why we shop. I've noticed especially now that I'm coming up to the end of my pregnancy, I'm finding myself drawn to just mindlessly browse (problematic as I'm slowly winding things down which means I have more free time than I know what to do with!!). That in itself compounded with my other habits definitely has made things tricky but keeping these tools in the back of my mind (and trying to do things other than mindlessly play on my phone) has helped for sure.
      If you want to cut down on sale purchases, I'd maybe suggest pulling together some lists of things that you like about your wardrobe, and what you'd like to add/buy, and keeping to that during sale season. That way you'll have more of a narrow approach to shopping? I've found that has worked for me, I just need to keep the list somewhere where I can easily access it :) Best of luck xx

    I agree with you on limiting treating ourselves at milestones and birthdays. For years I thought I would buy myself a big piece of jewellery when I graduated uni, to mark my work. Especially as it was such a stressful time of my life, in the lead up and intensity of being accepted into the degree and uni I wanted, and the five years after. But while on exchange, I realised how I’d prefer to spend that money on my travels - those experiences that genuinely felt priceless. Especially when the weather was good!
    The remainder of my money I’m going to try save for rent and setting up a new household when I move out this year.

    • @mademoisellejaime
      @mademoisellejaime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To me it always just felt natural to do that, but I've been thinking a lot about the psychology around why I buy, and realised that it's more of a trigger point to me. I think the other thing is telling yourself, it'll be the "last thing". I did that SO many times in my early twenties - I'd have a binge and buy all the things on my wishlist and say after that I wouldn't need anything. Only to find myself wanting something new within days. Thank god I've managed to overcome that behaviour!
      And totally agree with you on experiences over things. They're the memories you're going to have for a lifetime :) And I suspect you must have made some incredible memories during your exchange :)

    I think what has worked for me recently is to not allow myself to just shop for my fantasy self. I also have been selling all the things I am not wearing and trying to put the money earned into savings. I have really decreased makeup spending as I am trying to use a lot of things up and realizing that if I have something similar or samples or something else I have to use those up first and it stops me from just buy buy buy as it actually takes a long time to use up makeup and skincare etc when it comes to beauty. Having financial goals helps to keep you on track as you have to choose to invest in yourself sometimes that takes a lot of discipline. I have some work to do on my shopping habits for sure but I have been doing a lot better of late due to shifting the way I think about this area. Rewarding yourself is a hard habit to break sometimes it needs to be a healthy balance of priorities and allowing yourself to celebrate success in a realistic and healthy way.

    • @mademoisellejaime
      @mademoisellejaime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OMG YES! This idea of the fantasy self is something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and definitely want to expand more on in a video (as well as another related topic).
      And I totally can relate. I've been trying to make an effort now to use up all my skincare (and make my way through backups) rather than having multiple things on the go. Makeup is one that is so hard to get through (unless it's something like mascara or eyeliner which I always manage to use up quickly), and one thing I noticed with eyeshadow and lipsticks in particular, is that I was always drawn to the same shades - I ended up with a lot of repetition in my collection.
      And I totally agree! I think knowing your boundaries, what triggers you, and what feels right in any given situation is important.Sometimes you just need to treat yourself, too :)

    Great tips, thanks. I really do need a new wardrobe, Including underwear, sleepwear, outerwear - everything except shoes and accessories, because I lost 30 lbs. and almost 3 dress sizes last year, just by walking every day. It’s too hot to walk now, but I will try to walk off the last 30 next fall, winter and spring. I have altered (myself) all the older garments (many new that year!) I could to make them wearable, but most just can’t be sized down that much, so I will have to do a lot of donating and selling. I am buying a few things for my interim size, but as a seriously-out-of-control impulse buyer, I have had to set stricter limits for myself. So, I am buying cheaper-than-usual quality, more knits, fewer tailored pieces, and waistbands with some or all elastic, and nothing too dressy for my casual lifestyle. One thing that has helped me is setting a monthly budget. Then, when I can, I buy the next item(s) I need from my list. I try to only “fall in love” with items that I can wear at any size: shoes, scarves and other accessories. Being able to buy a small, but pretty, new thing now and then, helps keep me on track.

  • @aghost1283

    I've always relied on saving up for things before I can buy them so I'm not using credit. I'm having a hard time with shopping now that I make enough money that I can both save my target amount and buy generally whatever clothing that I want. I genuinely don't mean this as bragging, I know it's not a bad problem to have. But I've been having to develop new techniques to avoid accumulating way more stuff than I actually need.
    I think that for me, making a list and setting a wait time for each item helps the most. Also spending money on experiences, or charity, or gifts for others.

      I can totally appreciate this. Once we earn more money, we're often prone to lifestyle inflation, where our costs of living rise along with our income - whether that's renting a more expensive place, going out for more meals, or buying more items or more expensive items. I'm not sure whether you have any savings goals, but I find setting savings as a huge priority has always helped me with this. I have a set amount I'd like to save up this year so I pay my share of the bills, then set aside my savings first, before allowing myself "play money". Some months I don't do so well (we all make slip ups!), but the premise and idea is there and it's really helped me to build up an emergency savings fund as well as set aside money for bigger ticket purchases or experiences my husband and I want to make :)
      And having that cooling off period is key! I can't even begin to fathom how many purchases my 30 day shopping rule has stopped me from buying! xx

    • @Minnow37
      @Minnow37 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mademoiselle savings goals helps for sure, but I realised I need specific large item type goals for my savings to be most effective. Such as my overseas exchange, where I had no clue what my expenses would be like. So whenever I got near my goal, I would raise it higher and higher. I’m pondering if I should set a massive goal like saving for an apartment deposit in line with that pattern, or that’s TOO big and I’ll only get disheartened....

    Hey Jaime. You're looking so relaxed and beautiful. We also love Christina's channel. Very inspiring. I did the Oxfam September No Buy last year and felt it led to me overspending in October! It was had the totally opposite effect it should've, so I agree with you. I'd rather restrict myself as a 'lifestyle' than do the odd crash diet. We've really done well this year so far. I've only bought a wedding dress and shoes for my daughter's wedding, and a linen shirt. No frivolous shopping yet! So pleased with this lifestyle change. xox (Belinda)

    Such a great video Jamie!
    I find thinking about the opportunity cost of a purchase/evaluating the potential for investing that same amount of money over the next 20+ years, really helps (eg $10000 invested well now now could easily equate to $100000 then... or I could just buy that jumbo and forget about it 😅).
    I also suffered a pregnancy loss the week before my 25th birthday, and lost my gran - the most important attachment figure in my childhood - during the month of my 13th birthday, so I really feel you on impulse shopping to dull those difficult feelings.
    Sending lots of love your way; I hope the last few weeks of your pregnancy are smooth sailing, and new motherhood treats you well (it’s also ok if it doesn’t - parenting can be hard, especially in the beginning ❤️).

      That is such a wise way to think about your money. I'm really hoping to start investing this year properly (would like to get into stocks etc), as it's amazing to see how your wealth can grow over time.
      I'm sorry to hear that you're in a similar situation to me with those feelings of loss - I've always used shopping as a way to quell those emotions and I'm not sure what it is about the last six months but it's slowly dawning on me how destructive that is (as I'm not actually dealing with the issues of loss themselves!). It's hard isn't it? No right or wrong way to move forward, and as I keep telling myself, be kind and remember you aren't perfect.
      Thank you! Could be any day now so we are just waiting. Looking forward to meeting our wee one - crossing my fingers we get a good sleeper! :D

      Our little one was very wakeful, but after 4 years, we’ve made peace with it (only 1-2 wakings per night now 🎉).
      It’s hard, but the smiles, “mama”s, seeing your husband become a father, and all the little, special moments, make the exhaustion and sacrifices worth it.
      You’ll be amazing!
      Also, if you’re looking for supportive parenting groups, I’ve found The Beyond Sleep Training Project, and Gentle Parents Unite to be (mostly) very helpful.
      Good luck xx

    My tip is to have something significant to save towarfs such as a holiday or purchasing a car or property.
    When saving for a big holiday last year, i had to set aside $500 per week so any other spending could only come out of whatever money i had left to spend after that.

    Funny enough, I’ve found “milestone shopping” to be helpful for me, because it’s the only time I allow myself to buy unnecessary things on my wish list. I don’t tend to buy for holidays or birthdays, but more when I’ve achieved some kind of goal (usually finance related), then I reward myself with an indulgence, one or two purchases that have been on my wish list for many months. It works for me anyways.
