Retired pilot here, modern aircraft don’t rely solely on GPS and the system will tell you when GPS info is being disregarded.
Flying up the Baltic towards Estonia we often got spiking on the weather radar which we knew was Russian long range radar keeping an eye on all the traffic in that area.
This sounds like more propaganda to keep upping the war rhetoric.

What a bunch of hype form people who have nota clue how a Jet airliner navigate. GPS jamming has been with us for years especially in the eastern Mediterranean and in the twenty years of flying jets in that area I did not get lost. If you think the GPS is telling you lies the aircraft has systems that will warm you of this. If you get a warning you simply check your position with conventional ground based navigation beacons. The one note of caution I would issue is due to GPS authority are withdrawing conventional navigation beacons on cost grounds, in the light of the increase of GPS jamming the authorities should be reviewing the policy of shutting down the ground based navigation beacons.
Thank God for an intelligent response! The Scum news sheet seems to think GPS is some miracle gizmo that can look down to earth and say to itself "Hah! That looks like a Ryanair flight. Let's jam his GPS but make sure we don't affect the Aeroflot flight 5 miles behind it"! And who remembers the early days of GPS when "selective accuracy" was deployed?
If gps was corrupted simply use Glonas, not as accurate but it knows the difference between Spain vs Iceland so better than biden.
Agree, worst case is ATC will enforce higher separation and also reduce flight density by not approving en-route slots and keeping aircraft on the ground (same as during ATC strikes)....It all causes delays and headaches of course but not safety per se.
Just recently viewed a documentary of a flight from Copahagen to Bangkok which showed the blank screens when being jammed , the pilot explained in great detail how they coped with the situation , very informative , it was an SAS flight .
@@sparky7809 The you have seen a spoof documentary in nearly thirty years of flying I have never seen all the screens go blank together. If you do loose the map display you simply switch to another navigation mode.

The GPS planes use is controlled by the US and jamming is very short range. More likely the US has reduced the accuracy to prevent civilian gps systems being used as weapons.
Airplanes were flying before GPS was invented and can still be flown without GPS. Back ups for everything. ATC has its own radar for their job. No GPS is not the end of the world.

Is Putin in the room with us now? They have been doing this for years near Baltic Sea from Kalingrad. Note how they just say Europe. It’s a specific area Russia has targeted to prevent cruise missile attacks that can be avoided if it’s a concern.

😅😅 Aircraft separation is controlled by ATC ground radar! Such a BS story.
We use pre programmed WAYPOINTS to navigate to all destinations. GPS isnt the main navigation
system.
Waypoints are fixed ground transmitters across the world. The russians cannot change these.
GPS is US military system anyway, the access to the SV's (Space Vehicles) that civilian GPS receivers can see is easily jammed.
The equipment required to jam the non encrypted channels of GPS is basic as you like anyone could do it with the most basic bits of equipment.
C/A code is what is being jammed.
P/ Y code is military encrypted.
I recommend to whoever is the highest up reading this involved with UK CASD and US Navy Trident programmes. To immediately revoke all access to any other countries military to the encrypted channels of GPS and revoke access to our own military apart from SSBNs. UK and US Navy ONLY. Upgrade the access to encrypted channels to SSBN ONLY.

You can turn GPS updates ‘off’ and revert to aid to aid or IRS navigation. ATC will most likely increase lateral and longitudinal separation. Oceanic RVSM without GPS will reduce airspace saturation. In other words, fly the way they did 20 years ago.

Can they switch back to using VOR/DME/ADF (beacons), or Internal Navigation System? They had those things in the 70s. I don't know if modern planes still have them.

Laser Gyro's would be a good second option. However I do find it hard to see how interference to a commercial GPS could properly be achieved, it is a clever beast. Why would be ignored by NATO Art 5 comes to mind.
So Intertial Navigation Systems are redundant then! The RAF jam GPS here in UK too although they do notify via NOTAMS. TCAS doesn't rely on GPS. This is all getting very silly!

Good job aircraft have IRS systems and DME/DME position update as back up. Most annoying thing is we loose the clock as it’s linked to GPS…. Been happening for years. Especially in the Cyprus region when allies were supporting forces in ground in Syria and Iraq. Slow news day?
Aircraft use laser gyrometers for navigation if GPS is not available. Very accurate.

How dare Putin jam the navigation systems of the drones that UK and US give to Ukraine, it could cause them to miss their targets and waste vast sums of taxpayer's money! Drones are not cheap.

US Military owns GPS and rely on it. Risk is that if US went to war they can remove access for everyone Hence Galileo (oh, we dropped out of that!)and others. We have none of our own now. There is a lot of work going on for 'GPS denied' situations, nothing as good yet.
@nigelsilverthorn9188 I was referring to technology that is being suppressed. There are so many patents that are being hidden, so many scientists and tinkerers who have mysteriously died. The whole climate change issue is a scam and they have far better flying vehicles than planes. I'm trying to spread the word, although I know it makes me sound like a loon.
