I currently have the core lightweight crew, Grinder hoody, and dakota vest. I hunt in NC so temps are crazy low, but do get into the high teens with 10-20mph winds in the swamp. Going to get a DWJ soon, but can't figure out if I should get a duck oven or just a gradient jacket to go with my system. Any advice?
What did you end up with? I am in a similar situation and am also hunting in NC. I have a core lightweight hoodie and some solid base layers from under armour including a quarter zip. I have a Delta wading jacket for water/wind protection. Not sure if I am better off with a gradient hoodie or dakota
@@dewyo4224I hunt the Knap of reeds area in NC and my gear consists of, gradient pant, gradient hoody, core lightweight hoody (use it for turkey hunting too), neck gaiter and boreal beanie. I hunted one day last season when it snowed and never once got cold. While there are many options for tops the gradient pants are a MUST. Never wore anything warmer.
I hunt in Quebec Canada, from September early season deep into late season December. So temperature varies between 70s all the way down to to possibly 0s. As well my hunts vary from chopped corn fields to boat/marsh hunts. With that being said, what do you think would be the best layering system to take me through each season? I was thinking: Delta wading jacket , Fahrenheit vest, Dakota hoodie, and merino base layer shirt. And can add subtract based on the day. What do you think of that? As well like I said about hunting different environments from corn fields to boat/marsh. Wich camo would you go with in my scenerio? Thanks!
I have a Dakota hoodie. It’s borderline too warm. I’ve only worn it a few times in the 3 years I’ve owned it. That being said, it’s a good option to have in the closet for those real cold and windy days.
Just got the duck oven but am looking for something to go over or under it as the duck oven as I have heard is not very water repellant or as durable. I don’t have the money to drop another $300 on the outer shells and such. I am only in NC so temps aren’t terribly cold but I was either thinking a mid weight (or something light with a hoodie) under the the duck oven and sacrifice the durability of the duck oven, or something with a hoodie to go over the duck oven. What do you think should go over the duck oven? Something like the gradient hoodie because of it’s water repellency? Also is the gradient hoodie pockets that soft style like the Dakota? Is it quiet (deer hunting)? Thanks so much for reading, it would help a ton!
The only thing I’d put over the Duck Oven is the Delta Wading Jacket , but that’s another $400. I’d do Grinder hoody under the Duck Oven . The DO and Dakota are similar in water repellency. Grinder and DO would be a good set for NC, or even. Sitka Logo hoody under a DO is very warm. I’d save up for a DWJ , that would finish your system nicely.
@@fieldseriesreview Ok thanks so much. I have an outer shell from drake that I love because of the pockets, so I do like your idea of the grinder hoodie. In the future, I will get the Gradient or the Dakota just to have as a backup or unless I want something with a hood. Thanks again!
I like how you just skip over Louisiana in the southern states. It’s awesome how all the money Louisiana has donated over the years to waterfowl conservation has ended up destroying the duck hunting in that state. Ducks unlimited or any other organization like that will never get another cent from me.
Check out my DWJ Review. Normally I got with a gradient , Dakota, or Duck Oven under my DWJ. Depending on temps, 40’s gradient, 30’s Dakota, 20’s and lower duck oven.
The 2019 version is named the Heavyweight Hoody, the 2018 an older version, which I have, was named the Core Heavyweight Hoody. You can still get the Core Heavyweight Hoody at sites like Black Ovis. Thanks
Best Sitka reviews ive seen, keep up the good work!
Thank you
Really appreciate the review vids! Great to have the in-depth comparisons

You the man bruhhh... Love ya vids ... Helps me and everyone
Thanks man!
Great work! I love my Gradient pieces!
Would you put a gradient under a duck oven? Thank you for your videos. They are great reviews
I don’t, I’ll go Core heavy weight, Dakota vest, then Duck Oven. But whatever you need to stay warm

Marsh camo. Plenty versatile for Quebec 👍🏼 good luck

Can I ask you where do you hunt? Thanks

If i almost always take my dwj on the hunt with me in my bag, would you recommend getting the gradient or the dakota?
I’d go with Dakota , the wind stopper is hard to beat.

I have a gradient hoodie. Want the Dakota too. Should I go a size bigger on the Dakota hoodie
Can you layer the duck oven over the gradient jacket?
How would you properly layer under the Delta Wader Jacket?

@@fieldseriesreview what do you wear for base layers in those temps?
When does Sitka restock their website? The Dakota hoody has been sold out for a while
Is the gradient too bulky to layer under Dakota hoody? I was thinking about a midweight base layer, then gradient, then dakota hoody on top
I’m honestly between the grinder and gradient for my mid layer
I have a grinder coming this week. I’ll review it and get back with you .
Which one is a better layering piece under a hudson?
Most people go with the Gradient .
The 2019 Dakota Hoody has Goretex Infinium so it would be waterproof now.
No sir, Goretex Infinium is not waterproof, it is a Windproof and Water resistant Technology for Gore. www.gore-tex.com/technology/infinium
Are you from SC?
Na, I’m from AL, I live in GA now.
Gradient is kinda short
Sitka doesn’t make a core heavyweight hoodie
