- Welcome to the Gold Souq of Dubai, where you can explore a vibrant market filled with over *400 gold and silver shops*. This market is also home to the *world's largest ring*, which holds the world record and is a must-see for any visitor.
If you're planning on purchasing gold, there are some guidelines to follow to ensure a hassle-free experience, especially if you're an Indian passport holder. As Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs' guidelines, duty-free allowances for gold imports are 40 grams or up to the value of 1 lakh for females, and 20 grams or up to 50,000 for males who have stayed abroad for more than one year. The age of the traveler should be above one year, and it's essential to keep the receipt. Please note that this duty-free allowance is only applicable to jewelry and not gold bars or coins.
If you exceed the duty-free limit, and your stay abroad is over six months, you're eligible for a concessional rate of duty at 12.5% + 1.25% social welfare surcharge. For tourists or travelers who have stayed abroad for less than six months, the custom duty applicable on excess gold is a hefty 38.5%.
It's essential to note that the maximum limit of importing gold to India per person is 1 kg, and this limit was previously 10 kg. If you have brought gold from India, declare it at Dubai airport upon arrival, so it's not included in your total weight when you're coming back to India.
Tip for tourists: Don't forget to take tax-free planet sticker while buying gold, which allows for a 5% VAT refund using the sticker at the airport. Please note that this is not applicable to Dubai residents.
