I don't care if you fixed it or not. You had a go ... that's the important bit. You also helped me by showing how it works without stupid music or inane commentary. Pay no attention to knockers ... they're the handbrake on progress.
I enjoyed your video and found it helpful ... Thanks.

I'd suggest you take a look around the ruby bearings and the hinges they support. It appears there's significant play at the pivot point of the lever, which certainly shouldn't be there.

maybe you should rename the vid to 'how I failed to fix dial test indicator' ? Still, it was interesting to see inside one before I try to fix a damaged one I have.

Simon Penny no I’m all set, I was “systematically searching for the source of a problem in order to solve it, and make the product or process operational again. Troubleshooting is needed to identify the symptoms”...

I would second Sarosi's comment. It is probably loose ruby bearings (jewels). I enjoyed the vid. Thanks.

If you watch the video in slow motion starting at 0:54 paying close attention to the pinion gear of the dial. It is the crown wheel failing to engage with the pinion which is the problem. I definitely see the upper pivot of the crown wheel when you are reassembling the indicator so there's a couple things which might prevent them from engaging.
    1) Hopefully screws holding the plate of the upper pivot of the crown wheel were too loose.
    2) Perhaps the lower pivot of the crown wheel is broken allowing it to "angle" away from the pinion.
    3) Perhaps the pivot of the pinion which engages the crown wheel is broken allowing it to move away from the the crown wheel.
    4) You may have a cracked jewel for one or more of those pivots.
If you have mad skills with a lathe you might be able to fix #2 or #3 -drilling through the axial of the broken wheel- ...yeah, scratch that. It would be far easier to remove the old axial entirely and make a new one using the measurement taken off the old one. Then reinserting the new axial in the gear.
    Best of luck to you.
BTW, get some tweezers! Using needle nosed pliers on these parts is a good recipe for breaking pivots that weren't broken.

That filament spring you gave extra tension is inconsequential to the failure.
The failure is in the spring thats inside the dial itself. Using something into the holes on the gear to spin it counterclockwise it should get the gear ended arm at the bottom of its stroke and continue to spin it that way till tension is brought back to the wound up spring inside the dial. Dont over do it and check occasionally for the expected tension. Put the outer plate on if this works your indicator is operational. If it doesn't work, the wound up spring is busted. I didnt spend enough time understanding mine before doing this and spun it the wrong direction and I havent figured out how to take the face of the dial off of mine yet so i cant help you past this point.

I got the face off. Either pop the jewel (plastic face) off then pull the hand straight up off its pin. Or with force, pull the whole ring with the glass on it off, this isnt threaded just pressed on. Once the hand is off the printed face comes out to reveal another plate with the wound spring below it. Mine is all knotted up, looks like its time for me to buy a new one.

Jay Chris honestly don’t have a clue, as you can see it’s well made but it’s pretty old. From what I understand it’s an old cheap indicator. Which were still well made back in the day.
