      Back around 1979, a friend of mine got his hands on a bootleg tape of Eddie fooling around in the studio on a nylon string guitar. It was about 15 minutes long, and included a variation of Spanish Fly. He made me a copy. The tape player on my home sound system ate it years later. 🥺

    I remember all the naysayers coming out after Eruption saying he had too much distortion and couldn’t play like that without it. Then VH II came out and when they heard Spanish Fly there were no more excuses. Eddie shut them all up. I actually prefer this one over Eruption. It separates the men from the boys. Thank you, Ed. The greatest rock guitarist of all time. RIP.

      Yep, always gonna have your critics. I always say if you can only listen to something but not feel it, then it's hopeless. I've heard Eruption a million times and I still get goosebumps at the opening note.

    • @LOLLYPOPPE
      @LOLLYPOPPE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Whoever says Eruption is «easy» simply don’t have a clue. It’s not the «playing fast with tons of gain» that is impressive, it’s the small dynamics and nuances in the way he plays it that nobody ever is even close to replicate

    • @TheGuitarmaster1990
      @TheGuitarmaster1990 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Lmao it's hilarious when people say that he uses a lot of distortion because then you try to mimic his tone and realize he barely uses any, it's all in the attack.

      @@TheGuitarmaster1990 The man helped give birth to modern "High Gain" amps with the 5150 , he used a variac on old marshalls so he could crank them almost to the point of melting down , he had Josey Arredondo put in extra gain stages to his old marshall superleads to achieve more gain his bread and butter was his saturated guitar tone ,i don't know where ya got he hardly used any gain , malcolm and angus young are prime examples to low gain and a heavy pick attack making a monster guitar tone though.

      lol, your average idiot can play like this on youtube today... it was just fresh in the day, complete, and their timing was spot on, right after the big explosion, everyone was hungry for something new and Ed came through... I love Eds playing and both van halens, but it's not like that, he was mere mortal man who played all the time and had a lot of good ideas and focused on the music, nothing else, I am thinking so many sell Ed short claiming he was simply a great guitar player....

    I'll never forget when I first heard EVH. It was 1978 and I was at a friends house a girl we knew brought over the first VH record and told me that since I liked hard rock I would probably like this too. She dropped the needle and when Eddie launched into the first solo on running with the devil I practically fell off the bed. I still know exactly were my butt was planted and what I was looking at 38 years later. I knew Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page were now the past and this guy was the future.I take nothing away from any of those guys but when you look at the complete picture I think EVH is the greatest ROCK guitar played of all time .

    @JohncollinsAAVS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The story goes Eddie picked up an acoustic guitar at a house party and began playing Spanish Fly, something he was “noodling” around with. Yes Templeman was at the party, heard this incredible solo Eddie was playing and said, hey we should put that on the new album! Now some 40 years later we are all looking back at this amazing time in history that for some of us, we were fortunate to be around for.

  • @jamesgreenberg4786
    @jamesgreenberg4786 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    The Spanish word meaning "play" when referring to the guitar is "tocar," which translates literally as "touching." Edward Van Halen touched the guitar, it was an extension of himself. That is the mark of a virtuoso.

      I consider that to be a happy accident. The word "fly" fits this track more in my opinion, since its fast and convoluted melody (that might not be the best word to use) can be equated to the flight path of a fly: fast, all over the place, and definitely not straightforward.

Taking every way-out, off-beat guitar trick in existence from every source imaginable and seamlessly repackaging that disparate catalog with freakish home-made gear tweaked to sonic perfection in order to form one holistic new musical style unlike any other the world had heard before ... THEN writing dozens of incredibly catchy tunes over 2 decades that enabled this style - which otherwise would have been forgotten (like the source material from which he built it) as an avant garde curiosity for guitar nerds - to embed itself deep into the mainstream, from whence it has subsequently managed to influence every generation of rock guitarists since. Technical innovation leading to cultural influence ... in the tradition of Jimi Hendrix and Les Paul.

    This is not ad libbed. In that respect, it is unlike most of his solos where there is at least some ad lib parts (not all were but most). Running with the Devil is not ad libbed. The intro to Ice Cream Man is not ad libbed but lots of the remaining solo is. That's kind of a technique he used. Ad lib SOME but prewrite the rest so it sounds alive and fresh. It worked.

      @@andrehaubert6580 thanks! i dont actually ride a bike but the analogy from EVH is great because as a guitar player that played gigs long ago there were many times where I explored different musical ideas often during live shows. something i noticed he would do which would add a freshness to the performance since it was never the exact same. improv is one of my favorite styles because it forces you to think outside the box even when you stumble.

    Van Halen was a great guitar player!
    I composed music for him in the early 70's. I picked really fast and was a lead guitar player. After he heard me play my song, to show him how it went, he then showed me Spanish fly...:-)
    I also taught Van how to slide across the stage on his knees, while playing the guitar. I used to do it in my parents basement. And since I couldn't go public back then, I wanted him to play and perform as I would have...:-)
    David Lee Roth would always show up with Rock Candy, for my little twin brothers....;-)
