Mr. Waits is a song writer and storyteller. He is legendary.😢

His ballads are just heart rendering.
KENTUCKY AVENUE, also from this album, strikes me the same way -
He takes us along on a nice enough travel cade , and then shows us a couple frames that just slay us. Very powerful.

The guy has an incredibly tender side that makes him not just a novelty, but a very compassionate and special human being.

You selected my TWO FAVORITE versions of this amazing song. The live version adds an amazing twist of texture to the original. The audience has no idea what to do with themselves!

My first four cd's I ever bought; Dead Kennedys, Iron Maiden, The Exploited and Tom Waits. And it is still as fresh and fantastic as when I was fifteen.

About the people laughing: Even though it is a sad song, Tom's really got some witty lines in here, and if you don't know the song yet which turns black only in the end you really might be quite amused, and I think it's part of his concept especially with his live performance to get that laughter stuck in your throat with the final lines...

Love you girls. Wish I coulda caught you experiencing this for the first time but I should have known better. Your tastes do
    run to the eclectic.
Although I'm sure you've heard it, would enjoy sharing "Falling Down" from Big Time.
However, steer clear of "Ruby's Arms". I just couldn't take it.

Not a lot of happy Tom Waits songs to choose from :) One that always makes me laugh though is 'Step Right Up'. I listen to a lot of his stuff, but not if I'm looking for something uplifting.

True. Much like Dickens or Steinbeck, Tom paints very vivid scenes of people in very 'base' circumstances. Human. Raw. Yet, somehow, always just enough humanity to give you hope.

I like the idea of liking Tom Waits, but not enough to actually like him

  • @Blue-qr7qe

I think a lot of people laugh as a nervous reaction. They simply have never encountered anyone like Waits before. Maybe they were introduced to his music through one or two of his songs where he employed a bit of his tremendously creative wit, and now they think they're going to see a comedian or a clown. They think they're expected to laugh. But i'm always suprised by it, too. And it always sounds nervous and uncertain to me.

If I laughed it’s because he sounds like a caricature
