Me personally, I really liked the art style of the movie . The characters are all designed and painted to look a little bit 2D. I think the reason why it looks so video game-y is because the studio & a majority of the artists working on this come from a video game background. (The lead character designer worked on the new Crash & Spyro games). Also, I genuinely like the fact that they retconned Scrooge's backstory to make it more believable to why he would become so miserly later in life. Instead of being just a Schoolboy, He grew up being the sole provider for his family, and the reason why he starts pennypinching is because he's afraid of becoming destitute again. Also, I find it hard to believe that this version of Scrooge would die that quickly in the future, since he looks like he's in his early to mid 50s and in good shape. VERY good shape.
To be fair, the story does take place around the 1800's where being 50 was considered REALLY pushing the life expectancy. So him dying at 50 isn't that surprising- however, you're right, he is in amazing shape for his age.
I gotta say, my top three versions of this story is: 1. Barbie’s A Christmas Carol 2. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol 3. Disney’s A Christmas Carol (yes, the creepy uncanny version, I love it, it’s scary and awesome lol) I loved this one bc Scrooge didn’t change bc the consequences that would happen to HIM but of what happened to others. He begged to change not for himself but for someone else. Yes, in other iterations, he felt horrible for and others but it wasn’t until he was shown what happened to HIM that he decided to change. This movie shows a genuine version of Scrooge that doesn’t care if ppl hate him, he just wants to change to help people.
That detail made me love even more this movie! The fact that he wanted to change the future to save other person than himself, and even when he thought he was going to be punished he still wanted to at least save the kid
Damn. I might want to watch Mickey’s, Barbie’s, Muppets’ and Jim Carrey's version of The Christmas Carol. I've seen countless of people talking about it already so I want to see what the hype was all about.
If I hadn’t heard Later Never Comes I wouldn’t have watched this movie. It would’ve just looked like another CG kids movie on Netflix. But hearing Luke Evans GUN the vocals, and just how incredibly emotional the song was, I had to see it.
I never heard of this verizon and was randomly given that song in my reconditions. I honestly never loved the book and only really found interest in the Mickey Mouse one. But this one, I enjoyed it. I loved the art style and the artistic flare they took for animating the musical. And the music reminded me of modern Broadway
Things I loved: 1.) The Ghost of Christmas Past being a shapeshifting wax candle was a brilliant decision. Plus she was fun to watch. 2.) The approach of Jacob Marely was chilling. 3.) The Goodbye song. 🔥 4.) Scrooge being wrapped in his own chains and being pulled into his own grave. 5.) Scrooge seeing his own ghost. 6.) Luke Evans. Not the best Scrooge but a favorite actor of mine. 7.) Tiny Tim's sister being with him when they go wait for their father to be done with work. Seriously, why is it every other version let's the sick dying kid wander off on his own? Things I hated: 1.) Scrooge having a dog - Scrooge is an old grump who cares about no one but himself, so why would he have a dog? 2.) When Marely starts talking. Up till then it was chilling and spooky, then he started talking and all that was gone. 3.) The Ghost of Christmas Present, especially that annoying song of his which ate up way too much time. 4.) They left out the prologue of Marley's death. 5.) The horribly rushed opening. We got none of iconic lines - "Decrease the surplus population.", "work houses...", "stake of holy through their heart", etc. All in all, some very good elements to add to the classic, and a few things that could be boiled in their own pudding.
One thing I found weird was how they basically gave Scrooge the same childhood as Charles Dickens with his father being sent to a debtors prison for not paying his debts and Charles/Scrooge being sent to a blacking factory to help his family

Gotta say while the animation style is okayish, some character design are great the ghost of Christmas past has a wax candle is a great idea, representing the passing of time threw her melting.
This version of Christmas Past is pretty much my favourite next to Disney 2009 one. She totally makes me laugh with her shape shifting abilities. I know no everyone is going to feel the same way.
I just watched this, and I think what sells me on this version is how connected everything is and how that drives things emotionally. We also get a very breif moment before Marely arriving of Scrooge silently questioning himself. When he sees Bob and his kids just outside his window, the animation does it work as you can tell Scrooge is debating himself as he stares at the money in his hand. He of course doesn't do the right thing, but that moment imo informs us that there IS still a fragment of goodness in him. It makes his redemption a little more believable. But things like tying his sister's health to Tiny Tim's health, and all the little reflections of how his life has gone with thing around him he's igoring that echo those things? I like that. I also like that they kinda expand on his dislike of Christmas, becuase a lot of his worst memories happen to revolve around or on Christmas. Even his greed feels a bit more expanded on here, being rooted in basically daddy issues. His father struggled with money and debt, which made it hard on him and his sister; so of course he has a focus on wanting to find stablitiy and believing that money=stability. We don't see that much, if ever, in many adaptations, of how and why all this connects and why it effects him. So for me, that gives it something fresh. The animation and art design aren't that great, except for Marely and Past imo, like its clear they had a lot of fun with them. Everyone else is average at best. I also agree more or less with the music. There are a few songs that I feel work well, and some of them are Scrooge songs (like the goodbye song; I feel it having an 'epicness' kinda works becuase that is kinda the big turning point in this life; when there was still hope for him to be a better person vs becoming the miser we know at the start of the story, and Old Scrooge realizes this), but stuff like Present's song about loving life just feels way too modern and tonally dissident to everything else, though its not the only one it was my personal worse offender.
I also liked the speech by his nephew at his Christmas party where he explains why he still tries to be friends with his uncle and how he still misses the mother he never met.
What the animation lacked in some ways, the music and story easily made up for that! I was quick to judge this film, and I'm glad I gave this a watch! I wasn't too sure on the songs at first, but after seeing it, the songs were definitely solid for me! Later Never Comes is an easy favorite as well. I have to say, DAMN EVANS!!! He definitely had it great this year! The sheer talent he showcased felt like a sight to behold!

I actually really enjoyed this movie! I do think that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Cole scene might be too scary for small children, but other than that, I think it was really good! I thought the way they portrayed the Ghosts was pretty unique compared to other adaptations. They also changed Scrooge’s backstory a little bit in a way that made sense.
I watched this movie because of "Later Never Comes" coming across my FYP on Tik Tok. I didn't expect much but I was blown away. Granted the animation style could have been better-but there were many moments my breath was taken away. And this is probably because I'm a musical theater kid I really enjoyed the music. I don't know why but something about it just stuck with me.
A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite stories and I thought Netflix's Scrooge was above average and I'd give it a 9/10! I was surprised that I liked it even more than the 1970 musical adaptation, which is one of my favorites. The Netflix soundtrack's better than the 1970 one. The tone of "Tell Me Why" displays Scrooge's bitterness with more foreshadowing and subtlety than "I Hate People" and "Later Never Comes" gave me chills. Seeing Old-Scrooge's heartbreak at a choice he can never undo and Isabel's last effort to get through to him, oof, it was really a beautiful/painful scene. Also the original made "Thank You Very Much" its closing number, which, while very fun... always felt awkward with it being an earnest reprise of an insult song. I didn't see it as a perfect closing number compared to "I'll Begin Again" which works as a statement of the future Scrooge will make better. I like Albert Finney a lot but I always thought his portrayal as Scrooge leaned too far into "comedically crotchety elderly man" for the kids. Luke Evans' take felt more serious comparatively. The animated character design has the opposite problem that Finney's had though. Animated Scrooge is handsome and relatively younger looking. The audience should believe that BOTH Tiny Tim AND Scrooge both could die the following year if Scrooge continues being a greedy miser and he doesn't look old or in poor health. 2022's version quirks with changing names (Jen/Fan, Harry/Fred) and increasing Scrooge's pleasure in being greedy were pulled from it's 1970 predecessor. Same with removing the Ignorance and Want scene which wouldn't have felt out of place in the 2022 version since it didn't shy away from the scares (but most versions for kids leave out the "Ignorance and Want" part though so I'm not surprised). I was concerned when I saw Netflix gave Scrooge a dog cause one of the weakest animated adaptations gave Scrooge a dog sidekick who mirrored his temperament, BUT I'm happy to say I liked Prudence and found her to be a very cute addition! I think her dog-expressions will make children in the audience understand Dickens' intent since some scenes may go over an especially young kid's head like the part where Harry's heartbroken when Scrooge's covertly blames Harry for Jen dying while giving birth to him; so having Prudence make a "shame on you!" face at Scrooge conveys that Scrooge's did something especially cruel and uncalled for. I also felt that Harry's infectious optimism was very pleasant and Tiny Tim was properly heartwarming with those huge expressive eyes. When Harry talked about missing the mother he never knew it was a tearjerker and the scene with Bob and Kathy Cratchit at Tiny Tim's grave was very sad. Scrooge begging the Spirit of Christmas Future to spare Tim even if his own fate couldn't change also got to me. I really felt that Scrooge had changed then. Then after Scrooge's change of heart when he looks at the pocket watch (which previously elicited a painful scowl when he looked at it) and has a content smile, expressing genuine gladness that Isabel found her own happiness even if they'll never be together. I loved that. I thought the visuals were spectacular as well. The iridescent holographic effects and bright neon colors were visually stunning. I felt like the sets were 360 degree rendered environments (makes me wish they did a Oculus version!). My favorite quirk of the 2022 version was the overlays of Scrooge's memories when Harry or the Cratchits did something that triggered repressed empathy within Scrooge. I can see how some viewers might see showing that as overkill but I really loved it! It shows his change of heart because he's finally empathizing after years of having neglected doing so. Frankly, I thought the movie will hold a place in my top animated versions of the movie, definitely one of my favorite musical adaptations. I might've liked more accuracy to the Dickens text, but not every adaptation will be a 1-to-1, and I'm okay with that. I think it's also a well-balanced feel good version. I like the Zemeckis version but I felt like it tried too hard to be frightening and dour, where as for 2022's the humor and warmth balanced out some of the more somber elements. I think for me at least this version will be one that I add to my list ACC adaptations that I watch as a yearly tradition.
I loved reading your review!! I had a lot of fun watching this movie for the first time tonight, so I've been having fun reading and watching some reviews, both positive and negative. One thing: *Harry, not Henry. (I must correct because he's a favorite character of mine, haha!) I'm glad you brought a balanced perspective of both directorial intention and comparison to previous versions; many reviews, even by professional reviewers, would only mention how "it was too bright" and "energetic" and such but... yeah? It's intended to be for kids. I'm also grateful to see you mention the rendering of the 3D environments because I'm going to school right now for 3D animation, and that can be tricky stuff! I'm not yet knowledgeable enough to say if fully rendered 360 environments are common practice, but, yeah, I loved some of the settings and the creativity of them. I actually don't have anything to disagree with you on; I also like Prudence's inclusion, even though I'm usually easily annoyed by animal "sidekick" characters, and I don't have enough offhand knowledge of other adaptations to agree or disagree with your comparisons, but your notes on the uses of the songs in the first paragraph are stellar. @@jamminoutrexan5474 Thank you for your response! I had fun writing my thoughts about the movie since I thought it was such a great version of the story. There's a lot to love about it and even some of the minor critiques I had weren't things that struck me as "bad," just different. Even the thing I said about tending to lean more toward Scrooges who look a bit more old and stingy, that view didn't make me dislike how his design looked in the 2022 film, since I thought his design was very well done and emotive enough to pull off the character before and after his change of heart. And it can be nice to have Scrooge be a bit distinguished/handsome in versions of the story. For example, I always thought Sir Patrick Stewart looked very dapper in the version he was in, which is also a big favorite of mine. As long as the changes don't clash with the message and story, I'll almost always find something to love when you can tell the writers are fans of the Dickens novela. Also thank you for correcting me about Harry's name, I'm going to fix that.
While not the best version of the story I've seen, I'd say it's a decent enough movie with a lot of strengths going for it. My favorite parts/ elements of it: 1. The Ghost of Christmas Past! While in most versions of the story, he/ she (Depending on the version) is the least memorable of the three Christmas spirits, in this version she is hands- down the best, a truly delightful character! 2. The song "Later Never Comes" is indeed wonderful. 3. I really liked the scene in the very end when Scrooge gives a particular gift to each of his Christmas guests, and with each one, you see that particular character's sad Christmas Future fate being undone/ prevented from coming to pass with a much happier new future replacing it. I thought that was such a nice touch.
Considering that the future is something that can still change based on choices, it makes sense. But you also got to understand that most futures are nearly irreversible BECAUSE of the choices people have made through their lives. @@FezFindie
To be honest, i kinda disagree with you when it comes to songs. I loved the “Later Never Comes” song and “Tell Me” easily became one of my favorite villain songs ever. This is what makes this movie unique, it’s what makes it stand out, it being a musical. Of course not all songs are amazing, sone were pretty average, but there are some really really good ones. And I absolutely fell in love with Luke Evan’s acting and singing
I liked this movie, I didn’t know anything about it nor that it was a musical, but as soon as I heard the first song, I was hooked , the songs were catchy, I liked the characters even the background characters were fun.
It's funny you say "it looks like a game" because it's hitting me HARD, reminding me of Disney Infinity! Its literally the same style and visual as Disney Infinity. And to me that's not a bad thing, I really enjoy this visual take.
The first act of the film was very confusing to me because I couldn’t tell if they wanted me to feel for Scrooge or despise him. I got a bit of whiplash when we went into the song “Tell Me” about why he has his reasons for hating/ the way he is, when minutes before he said he wasn’t concerned about Tiny Tim’s health and that he pretty much blamed Harry for his sisters death.
I disagree about the soundtrack, singing, and music! I absolutely loved it! My personal favorites are Tell Me, Later Never Comes, and I love Christmas. I thought the singing was superb.
I was so shocked when I watched this movie and "happiness" started playing. I don't remember seeing in any of the marketing that it was basicly gonna be a remake of 1970 film. Anyway I thought the movie was alright but I totally agree with your point of scroodge not sounding like scroodge anymore when he started to sing. I don't think this movie was ever gonna compare with the 1970 one in my mind. I grew up with it and it's my favorite Christmas film. If nothing else I hope this movie brings more attention to the original movie. It's an underrated classic in my mind. Please go listen to the original soundtrack. I hate people is so iconic, and i just think the original music is better than the more generic poppy sounding stuff in the remake.
I found if you never saw this story before it did a fine enough job. I don't imagine parents would chose this for kids over other versions. As Some one who KNOWS the story the changes it made will be distracting. But it does have good creative moments. Some new ideas that in some way worked.
I try to think of this movie as more of an ‘spin off’ or ‘avant-garde’ telling of A Christmas Carol. In my opinion, if you want to show a Christmas Carol to kids-The Muppet version is always a good choice.
I took a chance watching this on Netflix and it's one that paid off. The animation is bright and colourful with some good talent providing the character voices. I'm a big fan of Scrooge 1970 with Albert Finney and you can see where the songs from that film influence this one, the fact also that Leslie Bricusse wrote the songs for both films. It's yet another adaptation of the famous novella and one that people will either enjoy, tolerate or just dismiss. I'm in the group that enjoyed it.
I wasn't a huge fan of this movie. I don't like how they made EVERYTHING vibrant, even the parts of the story that should be bleak or creepy. And I hated the elf/imp things that accompany Present and Future, and only serve to be Minions-style distractions that draw your attention away from the scene.
Yeah, the Imps were okay in the Present part since those scenes are jolly in tone though still bittersweet since the Cratchits are poor and Henry is disappointed Scrooge scoffed at his invitation. In the Future part they felt really out of place. The tone of "Thank You Very Much" having the imps wasn't that jarring since it's a snarky song; but every other part, like at the cemetery ... yeah, the dreary mood is deflated a little when cute imps are around.
@@Nightman221k Even in the Present scenes I didn't like them. Like at Cratchit's house, there was one moment where the mostly intimate, tender and serious scene was completely interrupted and deflated by an imp faceplanting into the window for no reason.
I literally watched this movie on a whim and just finished. Had to look around to see what others thought. I'm honestly shocked that it has such a low critic rating. Of course, I'm not a professional film writer or anything of the sort. Just your average person watching a movie. And I gotta say, I loved it. The visuals were good, colorful and cartoony but dark and disturbing when they needed to be. I don't need my animated movies to be super realistic, and a fun animation style just ads more character to the movie. The acting was great (again, not a professional) and I loved the emotion. I found myself loving most of the songs. I can understand why you think they were out of place, but the movie opened with a song. That sets the tone for the movie. While it doesn't bring anything new to the table as far as themes or ideals, it has the music and I know I'm going to be adding a few to my playlist. Going in with the mindset that it is a musical and not your average version of A Christmas Carol can help change perspective. Lastly, this movie literally made me cry. It does such a wonderful job of showing believable emotion and the people making this movie didn't have to go as hard as they did. Especially since, as you said, this story has been told so many times. I'm sure I will rewatch it.
I love this movie. I've watched it 5 times already and have the songs playing on repeat. I love the artsyle they went with (reminds me sometimes of Storytime Princess game), the voiceacting is great too and the connection between Scrooges past and current events MWAH *chef's kiss* There is only one scene that I really despise and it's the songnumber with Christmas Now (I wanna say Santa, someone else called him Zeus lol) and the little elves, THAT scene right there was the only one in my opinion that felt out of place. This is a weird thing but I kinda want a follow-up of this version. I want a continuition of it even though it all ended well.
The Muppets is the best adaptation for me (the costumes, the sentences verbatim from the book, the Scrooge) but this one is not bad. The music is amazing, the animation is cool. My problem is the not so serious touch; even in the moments the plot was dramatic they made silly comedy stuff. Also, the dog was the unnecesary Disney pet that was there just because; a dog would have ment a waste of money- not a Scroogey thing at all.
I enjoyed it immensely. Did Scrooge singing feel a bit out of place? Yeah, but I can forgive it since the performance was great. I will say, not every song was as big of a hit as Later Never Comes. And frankly, the animation and art style is okay. It doesn't stand out, but I had no qualms about it. Overall, 8/10 movie, and I'd gladly watch it again
When I first saw this on netflix I was somewhat skeptical but something about it was just drawing me in and I couldn't explain why And then I heard the first two songs and I was starting to get really interested since I love musicals and I found out this was one. And then the song when he is dancing with Isabelle and Later Never Comes just blew me away and lets just say I really like this movie Edit: Also his sister's song when she was a little girl and when he falls through his grave before he wakes up and you can hear a clippet of the different songs
I personally really liked this version. I've seen the others, Disney's terrified me for years especially Marley. I agree that some of the animation was a little odd. I really liked the voice actors. Maybe I'm being biased because I enjoy musicals, but I truly really liked the movie.
I’ve seen most of the adaptations of this, but I’ll give it a go. My favorites are the musical, Muppet and Disney version, Robert Zemeckis’s version, Scrooged and this years Spirited (which IMHO I feel is the best version I’ve ever seen and best Christmas movie this year). I’ll gander at this version and see what I think.
I recently saw this and to be honest, I loved it ! I thought the dad humor was rather contrived and unnecessary but it wasn’t that bad. I actually cried. The reprise of Thank You Very Much was very nostalgic because the 1975 Scrooge musical is a favorite of mine and my dad’s, and heaven knows I miss him and mom a lot.
5:28 the moment you make Scrooge a sadist who actively goes out of his way to hurt others and enjoys it is the moment you miss the whole point of the original
I agree. One thing I was always impressed by was how a book this old mannaged to make Scrooge an obviusly bad but not maniac of a person. He is uncaring and cruel but in being uncaring he does not go out of his way to ruin other people's plans.
I just watched the movie twice and I didn't see him that way. I see it as believable that he actually thinks of himself as a good guy or as just trying to get along, even if he sometimes does take his bitterness out on other people. (Most notable instance is when he gets angry at a kissing couple and shortly after sings "I'm not happy, so why should they be?" haha) It was interesting to watch this review because other reviews said it seemed this version went too out of its way to make him sympathetic, which I can almost agree with. He does a lot of second guessing of himself, even early in the movie.
Best i can describe this movie is ‘a Christmas carol but it’s slightly off’, unnerving things like marleys dog (and the fact that you know that scrooge would not feed that thing if it was in the original), scrooge’s young sounding voice and his backstory being altered into dickens.
This sums up my feelings about the film perfectly. I love "A Christmas Carol" and have seen a lot of its adaptations. I also love musicals and animated films. However, for some reason, I couldn't really connect with this one, and even struggled a bit to finish it. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it seems to me that it lacks some of the heart of other versions and relies too much on visuals (which I felt were a bit distracting at points), so it ends up feeling like a generic animated film with mostly forgettable songs (with a few exceptions, but I like the original renditions better). Maybe if I didn't have other adaptations to compare, I would've enjoyed it more, but I still think it's a good film for families and kids and it doesn't deserve so much hate from critics. It's just a bit meh as far as Christmas movies are concerned (or maybe I've just become more cynical and Scrooge-like as I grow older 😝).
Must say, when the movie began and it instantly started with "I love Christmas" I first thought oh heavens, a tiny kids movie, maybe I should not keep watching. But actually because I kinda enjoyed the visuals already (and as an animator myself I must say I love the atmosphere created, I know how hard it is to get exactly what you want with an animation and I think they got that pretty fine) I kept watching. When Harry was playing around with the kids my dirty mind had a little thought of "oh is he a pedo?" but yeah of course that's just me and my mind. Nevermind. I kept watching, and instantly fell in love with the scrooge design. Yes, it looks a bit too young, but for me it feels like scrooge would the the person to care about his look. So I kept watching. And then, that look down on the money in his hand, should he not give those five pounds to Cratchit? really made me still see some hope in him. What I never really liked in the Disney version was how Scrooge just got from that completely grumpy, old, kinda scary dude to the oh hey I'm a joking around all loving people grandpa! Felt more like dementia for me. So yeah, the Netflix version did great on that transformation, when he in the end sang about how he hoped to finally fulfill his life, had me almost down to tears (got those earlier already) and I really was able to connect with the character. And back to after he decided to not give Cratchit more money, when the music started playing I was like 'now here we go again, time for the next song' and then Scrooge started singing "Tell Me"...dang I never thought I'd love that song so much but yes I do. It in my opinion really is a good villain song, and I actually loved how Marley's 'Ebenezer Scrooge, Ebenezer Scrooge!' was fitting so perfectly with the song, I just really enjoy listening to that song. Also, Marley's design...at first I thought 'seriously, he looks freaking hilarious', but I must say, that design really got something. Maybe because of the video game vibes, maybe because of all the details, idk. But let's keep going, I still see past as the most, if not too much hilarious character, but with Scrooge's dark past it might even help having that delightful character as kind of an antithesis. Then, well, present was...interesting. I do like how he's just always interested in drinking wine and how he enjoys life...but gosh, that transformation into future was really way darker than I expected! That pain he had when transforming, even Scrooge must have felt it. And I think they did a good job on future not chasing Scrooge like in the Disney version. In the Disney version future was just hunting down Scrooge, because, of course, Scrooge can't escape his doom, but this (imma say it that way) Netflix version of future really was nice. Scrooge first thought that was his friend. Future did not show Scrooge how bad the situation really was, he kept letting him think Ebenezer was celebrated for the man he was in the future and I think that created an even worse shock for Scrooge. But the fact he actually, in the end, wanted to change not for himself but for Tiny Tim was just heartbreaking. Tiny Tim was the character to make Scrooge think about giving Cratchit those five extra pounds, he was the one to light up the candle of hope for Scrooge to be able to actually change again and he was the one to turn that candle into a brightly burning fire. Overall, I do like this version of A Christmas Carol more than most other versions I saw and I actually think that Scrooge, even tho he looks like in his 50s, he might have died the next Christmas because he was- heartbroken, kinda. But Hella, Harry's wife, did not look like she was expecting a child during the scenes but in that one scene in the end, when Scrooge gave Harry the Father Christmas puppet, Scrooge was holding a baby in the shard of how it changed from him being completely loney to becoming a loving grandfather, so I think that Scrooge, because of his change, might live way longer than he would have without change. And before I end the comment and free my phone from lagging the hell off of it I wanna say a few words about Prudence. At first, and sometimes in between, Prudence felt like that typical Disney pet. But she actually was the only emotional support Scrooge has ever had, and I like how when she looked on Ebenezers coffin and saw his name she did not understand it was his body, but when that little creature (I'm not a fan of those elve like things) acted like it was dying Prudence instantly understood. I think Prudence was the candle Tiny Tim was able to light up. Prudence was the only one besides Harry and Bob to not hate Ebenezer, and the only one to keep the spark of goodness in Scrooge alight. And little funny story at the end, I watched Dracula Untold Origins as the german Syncro and ended up having a crush on the actor of Dracula, and now I watch this movie and I kinda had a crush on Scrooge's voice so I look up Luke Evans and woom, turns out I had a crush on exactly the same actor. I already forgot about the Dracula crush but now I really wanna see that movie with the original voices.

I've watched a ton of versions of A Christmas Carol and I gotta say this one borrows a ton from Scrooge (1970) to the point that it's pretty much an animated remake of that film. Scrooge's nephew is named Harry just like in the 1970's version while in other adaptions he is named Fred, most of the songs used in this film are from the 70s version, you've got a group of orphans who make fun of Scrooge at the start of the film who eventually help him when he changes, and the thank you very much scene when they are celebrating Scrooge being dead is completed plagiarized from the 70s movie. The only thing missing was the Hell scene. If you were to watch both these films back to back it becomes fairly obvious that there is very little that is new when it comes to this adaptation. I highly recommend watching Scrooge (1970) if you haven't, it's definitely better than this film.
Did you pay attention to the end credits? That dedication at the end? The screenwriter Leslie Bricusse, who wrote Scrooge (1970) as well as for the musical stage (1992), co-wrote this version before passing away in 2021. With the exception of Tell Me and Later Never comes, the songs are done by him too. How can a writer plagiarize his own work I ask? And I believe this version was finished before his passing. This is just a different take on his original work. Either way, I found both enjoyable. But agree that his original work edges ahead of his rework.
Not the biggest fan of the character designs, especially Scrooge (I've seen people describe him as a DILF and I'm not okay with that), but the quality of the animation is there. The snow alone shows this. The animators clearly cared. The songs are alright. Not Disney level, but they're not bad. They're not very catchy or memorable, but at least they won't get stuck in my head like "You're Welcome"(Thanks Disney 😒)

i just wanted to say I HATED THE STUPID PIXIE THINGS THAT WERE WITH GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST! I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT THEM, BUT I HATED THEM, THEY SERVED NO PURPOSE, AND I GOT SO MAD WHEN I SAW THOSE STUPID THINGS STILL THERE WITH THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET TO COME! I also greatly disliked the ending. It felt too rushed and had no satisfaction to it. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Just got done watching this version, and I liked it. For me, music and visuals were the best part. Still lower on the top 10 list, but at least a part of the top 10.
Some of ny own thoughts about this newer version and the 1970 film: *Did not care for nephew Harry's opening song. I would rather see his cheerful nature and kindness towards others. *A flaw is that we never get to see Albert Finney's younger Scrooge really talk to Isabel during their courting. Their first actual dialogue is when Isabel is breaking up with him. It is my favorite version of the breakup scene though. *Scrooge pleading to live so that he can save Tiny Tim is a great moment for the animated film. This may be first time that Scrooge is specifically pleading for his life in order to help someone else. Did not care for the look of the supernatural effects used to show Scrooge his past throughout the animated film. It looks too modern for my taste. *I grew up with the arrangements of the songs of the 1970's film so they are the ones I prefer. But I did like that Scrooge got to sing Happiness with Isabel in the new version. Finney did not have any duets with his Isabel. *I never cared for Finney's Scrooge landing in hell towards the end. It was such a jarring moment that takes you out of the story.
I have a theory that might explain something about the songs, they feel like don't fit. I think somewhere a little too far into development they told them it needs to be a musical. the songs repeat lyrics more than any musical I've ever heard, because they probably wrote them near last minute to appease higher ups. But honestly art style aside I loved the animation, for being a low budget movie it was impressive
I liked two songs. Although, I kept thinking about “The Muppet Christmas Carol” and “Encanto” when listening to the music.The others songs felt weird and misplaced. I literally almost thought the Ghost of Christmas future would break into a Rock Ballad. The CGI reminded me of “A Barbie Christmas Carol” (dear gosh I had flashbacks of that movie while watching Scrooge) and “Encanto” Most of the iconic lines that were essential to the plot were cut, much to my annoyance. And while I agree that A Christmas Carol is an overrated and oversaturated Christmas movie, I think Netflix gave us a really shallow adaptation and told us to enjoy it. Pieces of it were enjoyable, but I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the movie as a whole.
You might be aware, but most songs are actually over 50 years old and were first in the live-action musical of "Scrooge" 1970 starring Albert Finney. There's a 3 minute medley of songs on TH-cam search 'Scrooge - Overture - Orchestra'). Many other clips are on TH-cam also (I Like Life 1970 is on there, and is far from a disco version!). It's my favourite musical and one of my favourite films!

@@matthewnord5238 -- Yes you may have seen the live Bricusse version! But there's a few musical versions, including the one with Kelsey Grammar ("A Christmas Carol"). The film's not great but some great songs like "Link By Link" and "Mr. Fezziwig's Annual Christmas Ball". But the 1970 Scrooge will always be my favourite!
I’m a huge fan of the 1970s Albert Finney version (the one this one is based off) and it made me uncomfortable when they redid the songs . Leave a classic musical version of a Christmas carol alone ! 😂😂😂😭😭😭🎄
What I'm really annoyed about is people saying the music is from this film, it's not, most of the songs are from the musical from the 1970's and they were actually really good. I was looking up one of the songs to revisit it and I saw there was a newer version, out of curiosity I checked it out and... they are just stupid remixes of what were already classics, like, "I like Life" or "Thank you very much" I just hate it when modern things touch the treasures of classical music

I personally liked this movie, though that’s probably because I’ve never seen A Christmas Carol before ( both the book or any of the movies ). But the only part I absolutely HATED about this movie was the dog. The dog was literally useless and I felt like it got in the way of everything. I didn’t think the dog was cute, or funny, just annoying. Literally nothing would change if the dog wasn’t there. I thought the singing was amazing ( though the lyrics were kinda generic ), but yeah. As a first introduction for me to this story, it was alright

Know why you're so unsure about the character designs? They're straight out of Fortnite. That bothered me throughout the ENTIRE movie and I can't unsee it.
I didn't like that they made Christmas Present an alien...? I thought that was kind of weird. Some of the songs taken for Albert Finney's 1970 version either got an upgrade (begin again) or a hard down grade (I like life). Mixed feelings. 2004's Christmas Carol was better overall as a musical. But I do like a few of the songs in this one.
Learning that Leslie Bricusse was the driving force behind both Scrooge 1970 and the Netflix Scrooge 2022 revival - producing both, writing the screenplay alone for the 1970 version and co-writing the screenplay for 2022, as well as writing all the song lyrics for 1970 and some for 2022 - I made time to watch the two films back-to-back. The Netflix 2022 animated version is much better plotted and paced than the 1970 version. Most of the songs in the 1970 version seem especially laborious in hindsight, and while looking the part of Scrooge in the 1970 version, Albert Finney seems unfortunately miscast as a singing Scrooge in comparison with Luke Evans. While Evans' voice portrayal of Scrooge in 2022 comes across as perhaps a bit too energetic and youthful, he carries the songs, 'Tell Me' early in the film and 'Later Never Comes' powerfully. Just maybe a little too powerfully for what is supposed to be an older character. The Ghost of Christmas Past, voiced by Olivia Colman in the 2022 version, is far more engaging than Edith Evans' forgettable portrayal of the same character in the 1970 film. Plus, given the abilities of computer animation versus live action, the visual effects in Scrooge 2022 are far more engaging as well. The 1970 film also takes a strange, and delaying detour into setting Scrooge in Hell before he finally wakes up, which the 2022 version mercifully spares us from. The inclusion of Prudence the Dog and a segment of Scrooge assisting Marley in foreclosing on Bob Cratchett's father adds positive elements that haven't been portrayed in past Scrooges or Christmas Carols. About the only places where the 1970 version does excel the 2022 revival is in the opening song, "Sing a Song of Gladness ..." played over the opening credits, which should have been used as the opening number somehow in the 2022 version; and Anton Rogers' excellent portrayal of Tom Jenkins and frankly unmatchable performance of the Oscar-nominated song, 'Thank You Very Much'. Giles Terera, who voiced Tom Jenkins in the 2022 version, should have taken more notes, especially of how Rogers launched into that song. In all, I find Netflix's 2022 animated revival of Scrooge the 1970 Musical to be better done, significantly so, than the 1970 original . . . except for that overly, and painfully, Broadway-styled opening number, 'I Love Christmas'.
Very well done analysis. I like both versions quite a lot and I also think I now prefer the 2022 one a bit more. I like that the 2022 version has "Christmas Children" in the soundtrack but not the film cause that song is so lovely and I love listening to it, but cutting it out for time and focus is a smart choice since we are meant to follow Scrooge so following the Cratchits that early on would be a bit of a detour and risks showing the Cratchits as being well enough off that they can get by before we see the extent that they are struggling. And the "I Hate People" song being swapped out for "Tell Me" was also a positive, "I Hate People" is really not as good lyrically. I also thought Prudence was a cute addition, I kind of like that her being around shows that Scrooge was close enough to Marley that he'd take care of his dog after he died even when he didn't like the idea of it. And Marley having a dog shows that he did have a redeemable aspect to him to indicate why he would try so hard to spare his friend. And I loved the addition of Harry's emotions about his deceased mom and the fact that he never met her, that was pretty heartbreaking. And Isabel actually witnessing Scrooge's predatory loans tearing someone away from their family and him displaying no charity or mercy... honestly, that's an inspired idea and worked well to show why she saw Scrooge as so changed. That and Ebenezer feeling deeply ashamed that she saw him do it is a good indicator that he knows in his conscience that his behavior was wrong. I love Albert Finney as Scrooge but his cantankerous Scrooge voice and crotchety hunched-over posture are very cartoonishly exaggerated; where as the cartoon 2022 Scrooge got to pull off some impressive subtlety. I liked the moments in 2022 like him scowling at the pocket watch he views as a reminder of the broken relationship with Isabel (and post-change-of-heart Scrooge looking at it and feeling entirely different when he sees it and says he's so glad that Isabel found her happiness) or when he sees Bob and his daughter helping Tiny Tim after he took 5 shillings from Bob's pay, to show he's considering giving it back before choosing not to. Finney pulls off the changed man Scrooge brilliantly with his jolly and jovial glee and infectious mirth; but I do feel like his pre-redemption Scrooge gets a little too silly. Evans is able to balance out the comedy with the tragic/villainous side. Finney is great, my favorite moment is his proclamation of "Begin Again" cause it evokes emotions. Now, that being said, Luke Evans singing "Begin Again" was also moving. I can't really tell which I like better cause both are effective at showing the change in Scrooge's heart. I do feel like the "visions of himself in hell" in the Finney version was a step too far. We shouldn't see Scrooge's vision taken THAT far in my opinion, where as I really liked how the 2022 movie had him getting pulled into the grave by Chains while visions of Scrooge's life are reflected on the scenery like his life flashing before his eyes... it legit was a chilling visual since by that point in the story we sympathize enough with Scrooge that we feel sorry for him so seeing him get dragged there is kind of heartbreaking. Especially after he expressing how he doesn't care if he meets a sad end so long as Tiny Tim doesn't have to die and he can help prevent it. And you're right about "Thank You Very Much" too I just really get a high-energy and zest in the 1970 version that felt a bit lost in the 2022 one, I can't exactly figure out how to pinpoint it but the live action actor just really makes it seem fun and celebratory in a way that just steals the show, where as the animated one feels a little bit understated somehow (maybe it's cause it follows "I Love Life" where Present is channeling Robin Williams' Genie energy in the previous musical number.). I'll definitely be revisiting both versions yearly cause both are awesome.
I knew from the first two minutes the Netflix version was going to flop for me, because their version of Dickens' London is so clean and warm and bright it looks as if poor people don't even exist. That was enough to show me they'd missed half the point of the story. Even worse, they tossed out all of Dickens' wonderful words and dumbed it all down.
I like how he was a.... Welll.... scrooge, for more than just 'grumpy man who's greedy.' He was made for be a bit more conflicted. It's not amazing, but it's alright. It's better than alot of animated features that recently come out. This film was alright
You pretty much said everything I thought. The actors were great & some of the character designs were great. The songs & dialog felt wrong for the story, but if I imagine them a separate pieces I like them better. I also like how we get to see a bit of Jacob Marley in life. Most versions we only see his ghost show up to warn Scrooge & leave. That Marley has already learned his lesson. So getting to see the living Marley, who hasn’t learned anything yet, was refreshing. I’d say 5/10.
the big damn problem with this movie is the portrayal of people around Scrooge. his intern with million kids who he obviously CAN'T take care of, why is it suddenly Scrooge's problem? that guy knew damn well he was too poor to even take care of himself, why having so many children for christ's sake? and the toy store owner? dude, you take money from the banker, you KNOW you have to give them back, so why acting so fucking spiteful about your debt? cheering when the banker dies and your debt is cancelled? you legally OWE this money, period. you knew you'd have give them back someday, what the fuck is your problem? and the singers? Scrooge didn't owe them a damn thing! he was a jackass yeah, he could be nicer, but he didn't owe anyone money, and those folks shouldn't have expected him to act like a goddamn charity organization. also I feel like all the songs were written by AI except one, especially the goodbye song, like they just have chatgpt a bunch of keywords and asked to stir something up
I watched many Christmas Carol adaptations and nah, this one was pretty mediocre. Alastair Sim’s A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Carol (1938), The Muppet’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged, George C. Scott A Christmas Carol, among others are far superior to this.
Personally I greatly enjoyed it. I’m just gonna say…… it says a lot about Netflix and the way they just put their content into their streaming service and make it feel like you’re going to a minefield. Social justice this….. political statement that. Constantly wasting their money on these expensive attempts to get these unnecessary backpacks from certain circles and try to act like they are an ally to the cause…… no matter how much money they waste that we spend on their service. It just feels incredibly good to watch something that is generally entertaining and doesn’t try to push any kind of unnecessary agendas…. that is except…. Try to be a better person!…..Which in my opinion is a very necessary agenda to push…lol And even though the power ballads were not a big thing for a lot of years and I’m not gonna lie it can get a little old sometimes….. but they still at times pulled on my emotions and made me shed a tear. What makes the story so reliable is the character Scrooge who basically is an analogy of all of us. We all make mistakes and some of us get a lot of scars from life that leaves us a little unpleasant to others. So when you watch the story, you can’t help to think about yourself. Could you have done things better?….. did you say something that was uncalled for?……Or did it need to be said, but you could have done it with a little more grace? My only complaint was they got me in the Christmas spirit but unfortunately I can’t jump outside with a skipping of my feet and get my family to come over. Sure I can call them but we do that basically all year as it is and I would rather have them here with me having dinner making eye contact with them and telling stories and laughing about the past. But because of a combining of family drama on top of the fact that some of us live far away from each other it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a Christmas Carol ending Christmas for me this year. But on a different note I just think this movie was really good and I gave it a high rating. It’s good for the kids to watch and probably for the adults too who need a reminder of what’s important and that sometimes it’s never too late to try to make up for the mistakes you’ve made. If you watch this movie and it makes you think about calling up a sibling that you said something pretty mean to them and what to apologize to them then this movie has done its job..lol

I like the animation, songs, and characters it is not perfect but there was heart put into it. I am counting this as a must see in Christmas time for now on.
The movie was ok Dough I must addmit that I skipped almost all the songs including Scrooge's for two main reasons 1. I was a few days before two exams (yeah both in the same day) and I couldn't take a break longer than an hour 2. I felt like most of them were just thrown away in the movie without giving more deabth to the story or characters

I dunno, I just think it's unfair to properly judge a product in it's entirety of you skip/fast forward scenes and songs regardless of their relevancy. If it's a musical film with a story, it should be judged on it's plot, writing, and how the songs work their way into the narrative. Skipping said songs in a musical film just seems like a lackluster way to try and watch said movie. Even if you had exams coming up, why not just watch it fully in a few separate sittings? 🤷

Me personally, I really liked the art style of the movie . The characters are all designed and painted to look a little bit 2D. I think the reason why it looks so video game-y is because the studio & a majority of the artists working on this come from a video game background. (The lead character designer worked on the new Crash & Spyro games). Also, I genuinely like the fact that they retconned Scrooge's backstory to make it more believable to why he would become so miserly later in life. Instead of being just a Schoolboy, He grew up being the sole provider for his family, and the reason why he starts pennypinching is because he's afraid of becoming destitute again. Also, I find it hard to believe that this version of Scrooge would die that quickly in the future, since he looks like he's in his early to mid 50s and in good shape. VERY good shape.

To be fair, the story does take place around the 1800's where being 50 was considered REALLY pushing the life expectancy. So him dying at 50 isn't that surprising- however, you're right, he is in amazing shape for his age.
I personally think that it's possible someone would've maybe gotten fed up and killed him. We never get to know how he died.
I gotta say, my top three versions of this story is:
1. Barbie’s A Christmas Carol
2. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
3. Disney’s A Christmas Carol (yes, the creepy uncanny version, I love it, it’s scary and awesome lol)
I loved this one bc Scrooge didn’t change bc the consequences that would happen to HIM but of what happened to others. He begged to change not for himself but for someone else. Yes, in other iterations, he felt horrible for and others but it wasn’t until he was shown what happened to HIM that he decided to change. This movie shows a genuine version of Scrooge that doesn’t care if ppl hate him, he just wants to change to help people.
You are truly a cultured person. I knew that the moment I saw Barbie in a Christmas Carol on the number 1 spot.
That detail made me love even more this movie! The fact that he wanted to change the future to save other person than himself, and even when he thought he was going to be punished he still wanted to at least save the kid

If I hadn’t heard Later Never Comes I wouldn’t have watched this movie. It would’ve just looked like another CG kids movie on Netflix. But hearing Luke Evans GUN the vocals, and just how incredibly emotional the song was, I had to see it.

I never heard of this verizon and was randomly given that song in my reconditions. I honestly never loved the book and only really found interest in the Mickey Mouse one. But this one, I enjoyed it. I loved the art style and the artistic flare they took for animating the musical. And the music reminded me of modern Broadway

Things I loved:
1.) The Ghost of Christmas Past being a shapeshifting wax candle was a brilliant decision. Plus she was fun to watch.
2.) The approach of Jacob Marely was chilling.
3.) The Goodbye song. 🔥
4.) Scrooge being wrapped in his own chains and being pulled into his own grave.
5.) Scrooge seeing his own ghost.
6.) Luke Evans. Not the best Scrooge but a favorite actor of mine.
7.) Tiny Tim's sister being with him when they go wait for their father to be done with work. Seriously, why is it every other version let's the sick dying kid wander off on his own?
Things I hated:
1.) Scrooge having a dog - Scrooge is an old grump who cares about no one but himself, so why would he have a dog?
2.) When Marely starts talking. Up till then it was chilling and spooky, then he started talking and all that was gone.
3.) The Ghost of Christmas Present, especially that annoying song of his which ate up way too much time.
4.) They left out the prologue of Marley's death.
5.) The horribly rushed opening. We got none of iconic lines - "Decrease the surplus population.", "work houses...", "stake of holy through their heart", etc.
All in all, some very good elements to add to the classic, and a few things that could be boiled in their own pudding.
One thing I found weird was how they basically gave Scrooge the same childhood as Charles Dickens with his father being sent to a debtors prison for not paying his debts and Charles/Scrooge being sent to a blacking factory to help his family

I just watched this, and I think what sells me on this version is how connected everything is and how that drives things emotionally. We also get a very breif moment before Marely arriving of Scrooge silently questioning himself. When he sees Bob and his kids just outside his window, the animation does it work as you can tell Scrooge is debating himself as he stares at the money in his hand. He of course doesn't do the right thing, but that moment imo informs us that there IS still a fragment of goodness in him. It makes his redemption a little more believable.
But things like tying his sister's health to Tiny Tim's health, and all the little reflections of how his life has gone with thing around him he's igoring that echo those things? I like that. I also like that they kinda expand on his dislike of Christmas, becuase a lot of his worst memories happen to revolve around or on Christmas. Even his greed feels a bit more expanded on here, being rooted in basically daddy issues. His father struggled with money and debt, which made it hard on him and his sister; so of course he has a focus on wanting to find stablitiy and believing that money=stability.
We don't see that much, if ever, in many adaptations, of how and why all this connects and why it effects him. So for me, that gives it something fresh.
The animation and art design aren't that great, except for Marely and Past imo, like its clear they had a lot of fun with them. Everyone else is average at best. I also agree more or less with the music. There are a few songs that I feel work well, and some of them are Scrooge songs (like the goodbye song; I feel it having an 'epicness' kinda works becuase that is kinda the big turning point in this life; when there was still hope for him to be a better person vs becoming the miser we know at the start of the story, and Old Scrooge realizes this), but stuff like Present's song about loving life just feels way too modern and tonally dissident to everything else, though its not the only one it was my personal worse offender.
That life song present delivers actually is from the original musical from 1970
I also liked the speech by his nephew at his Christmas party where he explains why he still tries to be friends with his uncle and how he still misses the mother he never met.
What the animation lacked in some ways, the music and story easily made up for that! I was quick to judge this film, and I'm glad I gave this a watch! I wasn't too sure on the songs at first, but after seeing it, the songs were definitely solid for me!
Later Never Comes is an easy favorite as well. I have to say, DAMN EVANS!!! He definitely had it great this year! The sheer talent he showcased felt like a sight to behold!
For me the animation and art design is on par with Disney but i just view them as a lay person. To me everything looked really pretty and beautiful.

I love the art style of the movie, although I wish they had darker colors at the beginning to show how bleak it is with scrooge around.
I actually really enjoyed this movie! I do think that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Cole scene might be too scary for small children, but other than that, I think it was really good! I thought the way they portrayed the Ghosts was pretty unique compared to other adaptations. They also changed Scrooge’s backstory a little bit in a way that made sense.
I watched this movie because of "Later Never Comes" coming across my FYP on Tik Tok. I didn't expect much but I was blown away. Granted the animation style could have been better-but there were many moments my breath was taken away. And this is probably because I'm a musical theater kid I really enjoyed the music. I don't know why but something about it just stuck with me.
A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite stories and I thought Netflix's Scrooge was above average and I'd give it a 9/10! I was surprised that I liked it even more than the 1970 musical adaptation, which is one of my favorites. The Netflix soundtrack's better than the 1970 one. The tone of "Tell Me Why" displays Scrooge's bitterness with more foreshadowing and subtlety than "I Hate People" and "Later Never Comes" gave me chills. Seeing Old-Scrooge's heartbreak at a choice he can never undo and Isabel's last effort to get through to him, oof, it was really a beautiful/painful scene. Also the original made "Thank You Very Much" its closing number, which, while very fun... always felt awkward with it being an earnest reprise of an insult song. I didn't see it as a perfect closing number compared to "I'll Begin Again" which works as a statement of the future Scrooge will make better.
I like Albert Finney a lot but I always thought his portrayal as Scrooge leaned too far into "comedically crotchety elderly man" for the kids. Luke Evans' take felt more serious comparatively. The animated character design has the opposite problem that Finney's had though. Animated Scrooge is handsome and relatively younger looking. The audience should believe that BOTH Tiny Tim AND Scrooge both could die the following year if Scrooge continues being a greedy miser and he doesn't look old or in poor health.
2022's version quirks with changing names (Jen/Fan, Harry/Fred) and increasing Scrooge's pleasure in being greedy were pulled from it's 1970 predecessor. Same with removing the Ignorance and Want scene which wouldn't have felt out of place in the 2022 version since it didn't shy away from the scares (but most versions for kids leave out the "Ignorance and Want" part though so I'm not surprised).
I was concerned when I saw Netflix gave Scrooge a dog cause one of the weakest animated adaptations gave Scrooge a dog sidekick who mirrored his temperament, BUT I'm happy to say I liked Prudence and found her to be a very cute addition! I think her dog-expressions will make children in the audience understand Dickens' intent since some scenes may go over an especially young kid's head like the part where Harry's heartbroken when Scrooge's covertly blames Harry for Jen dying while giving birth to him; so having Prudence make a "shame on you!" face at Scrooge conveys that Scrooge's did something especially cruel and uncalled for.
I also felt that Harry's infectious optimism was very pleasant and Tiny Tim was properly heartwarming with those huge expressive eyes. When Harry talked about missing the mother he never knew it was a tearjerker and the scene with Bob and Kathy Cratchit at Tiny Tim's grave was very sad. Scrooge begging the Spirit of Christmas Future to spare Tim even if his own fate couldn't change also got to me. I really felt that Scrooge had changed then. Then after Scrooge's change of heart when he looks at the pocket watch (which previously elicited a painful scowl when he looked at it) and has a content smile, expressing genuine gladness that Isabel found her own happiness even if they'll never be together. I loved that.
I thought the visuals were spectacular as well. The iridescent holographic effects and bright neon colors were visually stunning. I felt like the sets were 360 degree rendered environments (makes me wish they did a Oculus version!). My favorite quirk of the 2022 version was the overlays of Scrooge's memories when Harry or the Cratchits did something that triggered repressed empathy within Scrooge. I can see how some viewers might see showing that as overkill but I really loved it! It shows his change of heart because he's finally empathizing after years of having neglected doing so.
Frankly, I thought the movie will hold a place in my top animated versions of the movie, definitely one of my favorite musical adaptations. I might've liked more accuracy to the Dickens text, but not every adaptation will be a 1-to-1, and I'm okay with that. I think it's also a well-balanced feel good version. I like the Zemeckis version but I felt like it tried too hard to be frightening and dour, where as for 2022's the humor and warmth balanced out some of the more somber elements. I think for me at least this version will be one that I add to my list ACC adaptations that I watch as a yearly tradition.

I'm glad you brought a balanced perspective of both directorial intention and comparison to previous versions; many reviews, even by professional reviewers, would only mention how "it was too bright" and "energetic" and such but... yeah? It's intended to be for kids. I'm also grateful to see you mention the rendering of the 3D environments because I'm going to school right now for 3D animation, and that can be tricky stuff! I'm not yet knowledgeable enough to say if fully rendered 360 environments are common practice, but, yeah, I loved some of the settings and the creativity of them.
I actually don't have anything to disagree with you on; I also like Prudence's inclusion, even though I'm usually easily annoyed by animal "sidekick" characters, and I don't have enough offhand knowledge of other adaptations to agree or disagree with your comparisons, but your notes on the uses of the songs in the first paragraph are stellar. @@jamminoutrexan5474 Thank you for your response! I had fun writing my thoughts about the movie since I thought it was such a great version of the story. There's a lot to love about it and even some of the minor critiques I had weren't things that struck me as "bad," just different. Even the thing I said about tending to lean more toward Scrooges who look a bit more old and stingy, that view didn't make me dislike how his design looked in the 2022 film, since I thought his design was very well done and emotive enough to pull off the character before and after his change of heart. And it can be nice to have Scrooge be a bit distinguished/handsome in versions of the story. For example, I always thought Sir Patrick Stewart looked very dapper in the version he was in, which is also a big favorite of mine. As long as the changes don't clash with the message and story, I'll almost always find something to love when you can tell the writers are fans of the Dickens novela.
Also thank you for correcting me about Harry's name, I'm going to fix that.
While not the best version of the story I've seen, I'd say it's a decent enough movie with a lot of strengths going for it. My favorite parts/ elements of it:
1. The Ghost of Christmas Past! While in most versions of the story, he/ she (Depending on the version) is the least memorable of the three Christmas spirits, in this version she is hands- down the best, a truly delightful character!
2. The song "Later Never Comes" is indeed wonderful.
3. I really liked the scene in the very end when Scrooge gives a particular gift to each of his Christmas guests, and with each one, you see that particular character's sad Christmas Future fate being undone/ prevented from coming to pass with a much happier new future replacing it. I thought that was such a nice touch.
Point 3 rather nailing down on the idea of the future shown only being "May to come" rather than "Will to come"?
Considering that the future is something that can still change based on choices, it makes sense. But you also got to understand that most futures are nearly irreversible BECAUSE of the choices people have made through their lives. @@FezFindie
To be honest, i kinda disagree with you when it comes to songs. I loved the “Later Never Comes” song and “Tell Me” easily became one of my favorite villain songs ever. This is what makes this movie unique, it’s what makes it stand out, it being a musical. Of course not all songs are amazing, sone were pretty average, but there are some really really good ones. And I absolutely fell in love with Luke Evan’s acting and singing

I liked this movie, I didn’t know anything about it nor that it was a musical, but as soon as I heard the first song, I was hooked , the songs were catchy, I liked the characters even the background characters were fun.
It's funny you say "it looks like a game" because it's hitting me HARD, reminding me of Disney Infinity! Its literally the same style and visual as Disney Infinity. And to me that's not a bad thing, I really enjoy this visual take.
I saw the trailer and went "ok why does it look like a mobile game ad" and thats its own charm

The first act of the film was very confusing to me because I couldn’t tell if they wanted me to feel for Scrooge or despise him. I got a bit of whiplash when we went into the song “Tell Me” about why he has his reasons for hating/ the way he is, when minutes before he said he wasn’t concerned about Tiny Tim’s health and that he pretty much blamed Harry for his sisters death.
I disagree about the soundtrack, singing, and music! I absolutely loved it! My personal favorites are Tell Me, Later Never Comes, and I love Christmas. I thought the singing was superb.

I was so shocked when I watched this movie and "happiness" started playing. I don't remember seeing in any of the marketing that it was basicly gonna be a remake of 1970 film. Anyway I thought the movie was alright but I totally agree with your point of scroodge not sounding like scroodge anymore when he started to sing. I don't think this movie was ever gonna compare with the 1970 one in my mind. I grew up with it and it's my favorite Christmas film. If nothing else I hope this movie brings more attention to the original movie. It's an underrated classic in my mind. Please go listen to the original soundtrack. I hate people is so iconic, and i just think the original music is better than the more generic poppy sounding stuff in the remake.
I found if you never saw this story before it did a fine enough job. I don't imagine parents would chose this for kids over other versions.
As Some one who KNOWS the story the changes it made will be distracting.
But it does have good creative moments. Some new ideas that in some way worked.
I try to think of this movie as more of an ‘spin off’ or ‘avant-garde’ telling of A Christmas Carol. In my opinion, if you want to show a Christmas Carol to kids-The Muppet version is always a good choice.
I took a chance watching this on Netflix and it's one that paid off. The animation is bright and colourful with some good talent providing the character voices. I'm a big fan of Scrooge 1970 with Albert Finney and you can see where the songs from that film influence this one, the fact also that Leslie Bricusse wrote the songs for both films. It's yet another adaptation of the famous novella and one that people will either enjoy, tolerate or just dismiss. I'm in the group that enjoyed it.
I wasn't a huge fan of this movie. I don't like how they made EVERYTHING vibrant, even the parts of the story that should be bleak or creepy. And I hated the elf/imp things that accompany Present and Future, and only serve to be Minions-style distractions that draw your attention away from the scene.
Yeah, the Imps were okay in the Present part since those scenes are jolly in tone though still bittersweet since the Cratchits are poor and Henry is disappointed Scrooge scoffed at his invitation. In the Future part they felt really out of place. The tone of "Thank You Very Much" having the imps wasn't that jarring since it's a snarky song; but every other part, like at the cemetery ... yeah, the dreary mood is deflated a little when cute imps are around.
@@Nightman221k Even in the Present scenes I didn't like them. Like at Cratchit's house, there was one moment where the mostly intimate, tender and serious scene was completely interrupted and deflated by an imp faceplanting into the window for no reason.
Even the scene with Marleys ghost and Christmas Future aren't very spooky at all, even The Muppets got those right
I literally watched this movie on a whim and just finished. Had to look around to see what others thought. I'm honestly shocked that it has such a low critic rating. Of course, I'm not a professional film writer or anything of the sort. Just your average person watching a movie. And I gotta say, I loved it. The visuals were good, colorful and cartoony but dark and disturbing when they needed to be. I don't need my animated movies to be super realistic, and a fun animation style just ads more character to the movie. The acting was great (again, not a professional) and I loved the emotion. I found myself loving most of the songs. I can understand why you think they were out of place, but the movie opened with a song. That sets the tone for the movie. While it doesn't bring anything new to the table as far as themes or ideals, it has the music and I know I'm going to be adding a few to my playlist. Going in with the mindset that it is a musical and not your average version of A Christmas Carol can help change perspective. Lastly, this movie literally made me cry. It does such a wonderful job of showing believable emotion and the people making this movie didn't have to go as hard as they did. Especially since, as you said, this story has been told so many times. I'm sure I will rewatch it.

I love this movie. I've watched it 5 times already and have the songs playing on repeat. I love the artsyle they went with (reminds me sometimes of Storytime Princess game), the voiceacting is great too and the connection between Scrooges past and current events MWAH *chef's kiss*
There is only one scene that I really despise and it's the songnumber with Christmas Now (I wanna say Santa, someone else called him Zeus lol) and the little elves, THAT scene right there was the only one in my opinion that felt out of place.
This is a weird thing but I kinda want a follow-up of this version. I want a continuition of it even though it all ended well.

My favorite is the 1938 version starring: Reginald Owen.
The Muppets is the best adaptation for me (the costumes, the sentences verbatim from the book, the Scrooge) but this one is not bad. The music is amazing, the animation is cool. My problem is the not so serious touch; even in the moments the plot was dramatic they made silly comedy stuff. Also, the dog was the unnecesary Disney pet that was there just because; a dog would have ment a waste of money- not a Scroogey thing at all.
We all have to agree: Muppets is the best adaptation of ACC. It's got everything.
So, please, if you haven't, do a review on that!
I enjoyed it immensely. Did Scrooge singing feel a bit out of place? Yeah, but I can forgive it since the performance was great. I will say, not every song was as big of a hit as Later Never Comes. And frankly, the animation and art style is okay. It doesn't stand out, but I had no qualms about it. Overall, 8/10 movie, and I'd gladly watch it again

When I first saw this on netflix I was somewhat skeptical but something about it was just drawing me in and I couldn't explain why
And then I heard the first two songs and I was starting to get really interested since I love musicals and I found out this was one. And then the song when he is dancing with Isabelle and Later Never Comes just blew me away and lets just say I really like this movie

I personally really liked this version. I've seen the others, Disney's terrified me for years especially Marley. I agree that some of the animation was a little odd. I really liked the voice actors. Maybe I'm being biased because I enjoy musicals, but I truly really liked the movie.
I’ve seen most of the adaptations of this, but I’ll give it a go. My favorites are the musical, Muppet and Disney version, Robert Zemeckis’s version, Scrooged and this years Spirited (which IMHO I feel is the best version I’ve ever seen and best Christmas movie this year). I’ll gander at this version and see what I think.
I recently saw this and to be honest, I loved it ! I thought the dad humor was rather contrived and unnecessary but it wasn’t that bad. I actually cried. The reprise of Thank You Very Much was very nostalgic because the 1975 Scrooge musical is a favorite of mine and my dad’s, and heaven knows I miss him and mom a lot.
I only have one question… why the dog?

I agree. One thing I was always impressed by was how a book this old mannaged to make Scrooge an obviusly bad but not maniac of a person. He is uncaring and cruel but in being uncaring he does not go out of his way to ruin other people's plans.
I just watched the movie twice and I didn't see him that way. I see it as believable that he actually thinks of himself as a good guy or as just trying to get along, even if he sometimes does take his bitterness out on other people. (Most notable instance is when he gets angry at a kissing couple and shortly after sings "I'm not happy, so why should they be?" haha) It was interesting to watch this review because other reviews said it seemed this version went too out of its way to make him sympathetic, which I can almost agree with. He does a lot of second guessing of himself, even early in the movie.

What surprised me --- was that you did a Netflix movie tbh.
Not like you didn't kill this, it was just something I "didn't expect".
Best i can describe this movie is ‘a Christmas carol but it’s slightly off’, unnerving things like marleys dog (and the fact that you know that scrooge would not feed that thing if it was in the original), scrooge’s young sounding voice and his backstory being altered into dickens.
This sums up my feelings about the film perfectly. I love "A Christmas Carol" and have seen a lot of its adaptations. I also love musicals and animated films. However, for some reason, I couldn't really connect with this one, and even struggled a bit to finish it. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it seems to me that it lacks some of the heart of other versions and relies too much on visuals (which I felt were a bit distracting at points), so it ends up feeling like a generic animated film with mostly forgettable songs (with a few exceptions, but I like the original renditions better). Maybe if I didn't have other adaptations to compare, I would've enjoyed it more, but I still think it's a good film for families and kids and it doesn't deserve so much hate from critics. It's just a bit meh as far as Christmas movies are concerned (or maybe I've just become more cynical and Scrooge-like as I grow older 😝).
Must say, when the movie began and it instantly started with "I love Christmas" I first thought oh heavens, a tiny kids movie, maybe I should not keep watching.
But actually because I kinda enjoyed the visuals already (and as an animator myself I must say I love the atmosphere created, I know how hard it is to get exactly what you want with an animation and I think they got that pretty fine) I kept watching. When Harry was playing around with the kids my dirty mind had a little thought of "oh is he a pedo?" but yeah of course that's just me and my mind.
Nevermind.
I kept watching, and instantly fell in love with the scrooge design. Yes, it looks a bit too young, but for me it feels like scrooge would the the person to care about his look.
So I kept watching. And then, that look down on the money in his hand, should he not give those five pounds to Cratchit? really made me still see some hope in him. What I never really liked in the Disney version was how Scrooge just got from that completely grumpy, old, kinda scary dude to the oh hey I'm a joking around all loving people grandpa! Felt more like dementia for me.
So yeah, the Netflix version did great on that transformation, when he in the end sang about how he hoped to finally fulfill his life, had me almost down to tears (got those earlier already) and I really was able to connect with the character.
And back to after he decided to not give Cratchit more money, when the music started playing I was like 'now here we go again, time for the next song' and then Scrooge started singing "Tell Me"...dang I never thought I'd love that song so much but yes I do.
It in my opinion really is a good villain song, and I actually loved how Marley's 'Ebenezer Scrooge, Ebenezer Scrooge!' was fitting so perfectly with the song, I just really enjoy listening to that song.
Also, Marley's design...at first I thought 'seriously, he looks freaking hilarious', but I must say, that design really got something. Maybe because of the video game vibes, maybe because of all the details, idk.
But let's keep going, I still see past as the most, if not too much hilarious character, but with Scrooge's dark past it might even help having that delightful character as kind of an antithesis.
Then, well, present was...interesting. I do like how he's just always interested in drinking wine and how he enjoys life...but gosh, that transformation into future was really way darker than I expected! That pain he had when transforming, even Scrooge must have felt it. And I think they did a good job on future not chasing Scrooge like in the Disney version. In the Disney version future was just hunting down Scrooge, because, of course, Scrooge can't escape his doom, but this (imma say it that way) Netflix version of future really was nice. Scrooge first thought that was his friend. Future did not show Scrooge how bad the situation really was, he kept letting him think Ebenezer was celebrated for the man he was in the future and I think that created an even worse shock for Scrooge. But the fact he actually, in the end, wanted to change not for himself but for Tiny Tim was just heartbreaking. Tiny Tim was the character to make Scrooge think about giving Cratchit those five extra pounds, he was the one to light up the candle of hope for Scrooge to be able to actually change again and he was the one to turn that candle into a brightly burning fire.
Overall, I do like this version of A Christmas Carol more than most other versions I saw and I actually think that Scrooge, even tho he looks like in his 50s, he might have died the next Christmas because he was- heartbroken, kinda. But Hella, Harry's wife, did not look like she was expecting a child during the scenes but in that one scene in the end, when Scrooge gave Harry the Father Christmas puppet, Scrooge was holding a baby in the shard of how it changed from him being completely loney to becoming a loving grandfather, so I think that Scrooge, because of his change, might live way longer than he would have without change.
And before I end the comment and free my phone from lagging the hell off of it I wanna say a few words about Prudence. At first, and sometimes in between, Prudence felt like that typical Disney pet. But she actually was the only emotional support Scrooge has ever had, and I like how when she looked on Ebenezers coffin and saw his name she did not understand it was his body, but when that little creature (I'm not a fan of those elve like things) acted like it was dying Prudence instantly understood.
I think Prudence was the candle Tiny Tim was able to light up. Prudence was the only one besides Harry and Bob to not hate Ebenezer, and the only one to keep the spark of goodness in Scrooge alight.
And little funny story at the end, I watched Dracula Untold Origins as the german Syncro and ended up having a crush on the actor of Dracula, and now I watch this movie and I kinda had a crush on Scrooge's voice so I look up Luke Evans and woom, turns out I had a crush on exactly the same actor. I already forgot about the Dracula crush but now I really wanna see that movie with the original voices.

I've watched a ton of versions of A Christmas Carol and I gotta say this one borrows a ton from Scrooge (1970) to the point that it's pretty much an animated remake of that film. Scrooge's nephew is named Harry just like in the 1970's version while in other adaptions he is named Fred, most of the songs used in this film are from the 70s version, you've got a group of orphans who make fun of Scrooge at the start of the film who eventually help him when he changes, and the thank you very much scene when they are celebrating Scrooge being dead is completed plagiarized from the 70s movie. The only thing missing was the Hell scene. If you were to watch both these films back to back it becomes fairly obvious that there is very little that is new when it comes to this adaptation. I highly recommend watching Scrooge (1970) if you haven't, it's definitely better than this film.
Did you pay attention to the end credits? That dedication at the end? The screenwriter Leslie Bricusse, who wrote Scrooge (1970) as well as for the musical stage (1992), co-wrote this version before passing away in 2021. With the exception of Tell Me and Later Never comes, the songs are done by him too. How can a writer plagiarize his own work I ask? And I believe this version was finished before his passing. This is just a different take on his original work. Either way, I found both enjoyable. But agree that his original work edges ahead of his rework.

Not the biggest fan of the character designs, especially Scrooge (I've seen people describe him as a DILF and I'm not okay with that), but the quality of the animation is there. The snow alone shows this. The animators clearly cared. The songs are alright. Not Disney level, but they're not bad. They're not very catchy or memorable, but at least they won't get stuck in my head like "You're Welcome"(Thanks Disney 😒)

Just got done watching this version, and I liked it. For me, music and visuals were the best part. Still lower on the top 10 list, but at least a part of the top 10.

*Did not care for nephew Harry's opening song. I would rather see his cheerful nature and kindness towards others.
*A flaw is that we never get to see Albert Finney's younger Scrooge really talk to Isabel during their courting. Their first actual dialogue is when Isabel is breaking up with him. It is my favorite version of the breakup scene though.
*Scrooge pleading to live so that he can save Tiny Tim is a great moment for the animated film. This may be first time that Scrooge is specifically pleading for his life in order to help someone else.
Did not care for the look of the supernatural effects used to show Scrooge his past throughout the animated film. It looks too modern for my taste.
*I grew up with the arrangements of the songs of the 1970's film so they are the ones I prefer. But I did like that Scrooge got to sing Happiness with Isabel in the new version. Finney did not have any duets with his Isabel.
*I never cared for Finney's Scrooge landing in hell towards the end. It was such a jarring moment that takes you out of the story.
I won't be surprised if there is Scrooge update in the league of legends or Fortnite

I have a theory that might explain something about the songs, they feel like don't fit. I think somewhere a little too far into development they told them it needs to be a musical. the songs repeat lyrics more than any musical I've ever heard, because they probably wrote them near last minute to appease higher ups. But honestly art style aside I loved the animation, for being a low budget movie it was impressive
I liked two songs. Although, I kept thinking about “The Muppet Christmas Carol” and “Encanto” when listening to the music.The others songs felt weird and misplaced. I literally almost thought the Ghost of Christmas future would break into a Rock Ballad. The CGI reminded me of “A Barbie Christmas Carol” (dear gosh I had flashbacks of that movie while watching Scrooge) and “Encanto” Most of the iconic lines that were essential to the plot were cut, much to my annoyance. And while I agree that A Christmas Carol is an overrated and oversaturated Christmas movie, I think Netflix gave us a really shallow adaptation and told us to enjoy it. Pieces of it were enjoyable, but I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the movie as a whole.
You might be aware, but most songs are actually over 50 years old and were first in the live-action musical of "Scrooge" 1970 starring Albert Finney. There's a 3 minute medley of songs on TH-cam search 'Scrooge - Overture - Orchestra'). Many other clips are on TH-cam also (I Like Life 1970 is on there, and is far from a disco version!). It's my favourite musical and one of my favourite films!

@@matthewnord5238 -- Yes you may have seen the live Bricusse version! But there's a few musical versions, including the one with Kelsey Grammar ("A Christmas Carol"). The film's not great but some great songs like "Link By Link" and "Mr. Fezziwig's Annual Christmas Ball". But the 1970 Scrooge will always be my favourite!
I’m a huge fan of the 1970s Albert Finney version (the one this one is based off) and it made me uncomfortable when they redid the songs . Leave a classic musical version of a Christmas carol alone ! 😂😂😂😭😭😭🎄

What I'm really annoyed about is people saying the music is from this film, it's not, most of the songs are from the musical from the 1970's and they were actually really good. I was looking up one of the songs to revisit it and I saw there was a newer version, out of curiosity I checked it out and... they are just stupid remixes of what were already classics, like, "I like Life" or "Thank you very much" I just hate it when modern things touch the treasures of classical music

I personally liked this movie, though that’s probably because I’ve never seen A Christmas Carol before ( both the book or any of the movies ). But the only part I absolutely HATED about this movie was the dog. The dog was literally useless and I felt like it got in the way of everything. I didn’t think the dog was cute, or funny, just annoying. Literally nothing would change if the dog wasn’t there. I thought the singing was amazing ( though the lyrics were kinda generic ), but yeah. As a first introduction for me to this story, it was alright

Some of the songs taken for Albert Finney's 1970 version either got an upgrade (begin again) or a hard down grade (I like life). Mixed feelings. 2004's Christmas Carol was better overall as a musical. But I do like a few of the songs in this one.

Learning that Leslie Bricusse was the driving force behind both Scrooge 1970 and the Netflix Scrooge 2022 revival - producing both, writing the screenplay alone for the 1970 version and co-writing the screenplay for 2022, as well as writing all the song lyrics for 1970 and some for 2022 - I made time to watch the two films back-to-back.
The Netflix 2022 animated version is much better plotted and paced than the 1970 version. Most of the songs in the 1970 version seem especially laborious in hindsight, and while looking the part of Scrooge in the 1970 version, Albert Finney seems unfortunately miscast as a singing Scrooge in comparison with Luke Evans. While Evans' voice portrayal of Scrooge in 2022 comes across as perhaps a bit too energetic and youthful, he carries the songs, 'Tell Me' early in the film and 'Later Never Comes' powerfully. Just maybe a little too powerfully for what is supposed to be an older character. The Ghost of Christmas Past, voiced by Olivia Colman in the 2022 version, is far more engaging than Edith Evans' forgettable portrayal of the same character in the 1970 film. Plus, given the abilities of computer animation versus live action, the visual effects in Scrooge 2022 are far more engaging as well. The 1970 film also takes a strange, and delaying detour into setting Scrooge in Hell before he finally wakes up, which the 2022 version mercifully spares us from. The inclusion of Prudence the Dog and a segment of Scrooge assisting Marley in foreclosing on Bob Cratchett's father adds positive elements that haven't been portrayed in past Scrooges or Christmas Carols.
About the only places where the 1970 version does excel the 2022 revival is in the opening song, "Sing a Song of Gladness ..." played over the opening credits, which should have been used as the opening number somehow in the 2022 version; and Anton Rogers' excellent portrayal of Tom Jenkins and frankly unmatchable performance of the Oscar-nominated song, 'Thank You Very Much'. Giles Terera, who voiced Tom Jenkins in the 2022 version, should have taken more notes, especially of how Rogers launched into that song.
In all, I find Netflix's 2022 animated revival of Scrooge the 1970 Musical to be better done, significantly so, than the 1970 original . . . except for that overly, and painfully, Broadway-styled opening number, 'I Love Christmas'.
Very well done analysis. I like both versions quite a lot and I also think I now prefer the 2022 one a bit more. I like that the 2022 version has "Christmas Children" in the soundtrack but not the film cause that song is so lovely and I love listening to it, but cutting it out for time and focus is a smart choice since we are meant to follow Scrooge so following the Cratchits that early on would be a bit of a detour and risks showing the Cratchits as being well enough off that they can get by before we see the extent that they are struggling. And the "I Hate People" song being swapped out for "Tell Me" was also a positive, "I Hate People" is really not as good lyrically.
I also thought Prudence was a cute addition, I kind of like that her being around shows that Scrooge was close enough to Marley that he'd take care of his dog after he died even when he didn't like the idea of it. And Marley having a dog shows that he did have a redeemable aspect to him to indicate why he would try so hard to spare his friend. And I loved the addition of Harry's emotions about his deceased mom and the fact that he never met her, that was pretty heartbreaking. And Isabel actually witnessing Scrooge's predatory loans tearing someone away from their family and him displaying no charity or mercy... honestly, that's an inspired idea and worked well to show why she saw Scrooge as so changed. That and Ebenezer feeling deeply ashamed that she saw him do it is a good indicator that he knows in his conscience that his behavior was wrong.
I love Albert Finney as Scrooge but his cantankerous Scrooge voice and crotchety hunched-over posture are very cartoonishly exaggerated; where as the cartoon 2022 Scrooge got to pull off some impressive subtlety. I liked the moments in 2022 like him scowling at the pocket watch he views as a reminder of the broken relationship with Isabel (and post-change-of-heart Scrooge looking at it and feeling entirely different when he sees it and says he's so glad that Isabel found her happiness) or when he sees Bob and his daughter helping Tiny Tim after he took 5 shillings from Bob's pay, to show he's considering giving it back before choosing not to. Finney pulls off the changed man Scrooge brilliantly with his jolly and jovial glee and infectious mirth; but I do feel like his pre-redemption Scrooge gets a little too silly. Evans is able to balance out the comedy with the tragic/villainous side.
Finney is great, my favorite moment is his proclamation of "Begin Again" cause it evokes emotions. Now, that being said, Luke Evans singing "Begin Again" was also moving. I can't really tell which I like better cause both are effective at showing the change in Scrooge's heart. I do feel like the "visions of himself in hell" in the Finney version was a step too far. We shouldn't see Scrooge's vision taken THAT far in my opinion, where as I really liked how the 2022 movie had him getting pulled into the grave by Chains while visions of Scrooge's life are reflected on the scenery like his life flashing before his eyes... it legit was a chilling visual since by that point in the story we sympathize enough with Scrooge that we feel sorry for him so seeing him get dragged there is kind of heartbreaking. Especially after he expressing how he doesn't care if he meets a sad end so long as Tiny Tim doesn't have to die and he can help prevent it.
And you're right about "Thank You Very Much" too I just really get a high-energy and zest in the 1970 version that felt a bit lost in the 2022 one, I can't exactly figure out how to pinpoint it but the live action actor just really makes it seem fun and celebratory in a way that just steals the show, where as the animated one feels a little bit understated somehow (maybe it's cause it follows "I Love Life" where Present is channeling Robin Williams' Genie energy in the previous musical number.).
I'll definitely be revisiting both versions yearly cause both are awesome.
I knew from the first two minutes the Netflix version was going to flop for me, because their version of Dickens' London is so clean and warm and bright it looks as if poor people don't even exist. That was enough to show me they'd missed half the point of the story.
Even worse, they tossed out all of Dickens' wonderful words and dumbed it all down.
I like how he was a.... Welll.... scrooge, for more than just 'grumpy man who's greedy.' He was made for be a bit more conflicted. It's not amazing, but it's alright. It's better than alot of animated features that recently come out. This film was alright

You pretty much said everything I thought. The actors were great & some of the character designs were great. The songs & dialog felt wrong for the story, but if I imagine them a separate pieces I like them better.
I also like how we get to see a bit of Jacob Marley in life. Most versions we only see his ghost show up to warn Scrooge & leave. That Marley has already learned his lesson. So getting to see the living Marley, who hasn’t learned anything yet, was refreshing. I’d say 5/10.
The only thing I didn’t like about this version was the fact that it was a musical because it ruins the story.
the big damn problem with this movie is the portrayal of people around Scrooge. his intern with million kids who he obviously CAN'T take care of, why is it suddenly Scrooge's problem? that guy knew damn well he was too poor to even take care of himself, why having so many children for christ's sake? and the toy store owner? dude, you take money from the banker, you KNOW you have to give them back, so why acting so fucking spiteful about your debt? cheering when the banker dies and your debt is cancelled? you legally OWE this money, period. you knew you'd have give them back someday, what the fuck is your problem? and the singers? Scrooge didn't owe them a damn thing! he was a jackass yeah, he could be nicer, but he didn't owe anyone money, and those folks shouldn't have expected him to act like a goddamn charity organization. also I feel like all the songs were written by AI except one, especially the goodbye song, like they just have chatgpt a bunch of keywords and asked to stir something up

I watched many Christmas Carol adaptations and nah, this one was pretty mediocre. Alastair Sim’s A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Carol (1938), The Muppet’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged, George C. Scott A Christmas Carol, among others are far superior to this.

I’m just gonna say…… it says a lot about Netflix and the way they just put their content into their streaming service and make it feel like you’re going to a minefield. Social justice this….. political statement that. Constantly wasting their money on these expensive attempts to get these unnecessary backpacks from certain circles and try to act like they are an ally to the cause…… no matter how much money they waste that we spend on their service. It just feels incredibly good to watch something that is generally entertaining and doesn’t try to push any kind of unnecessary agendas…. that is except…. Try to be a better person!…..Which in my opinion is a very necessary agenda to push…lol
And even though the power ballads were not a big thing for a lot of years and I’m not gonna lie it can get a little old sometimes….. but they still at times pulled on my emotions and made me shed a tear. What makes the story so reliable is the character Scrooge who basically is an analogy of all of us. We all make mistakes and some of us get a lot of scars from life that leaves us a little unpleasant to others. So when you watch the story, you can’t help to think about yourself. Could you have done things better?….. did you say something that was uncalled for?……Or did it need to be said, but you could have done it with a little more grace? My only complaint was they got me in the Christmas spirit but unfortunately I can’t jump outside with a skipping of my feet and get my family to come over. Sure I can call them but we do that basically all year as it is and I would rather have them here with me having dinner making eye contact with them and telling stories and laughing about the past. But because of a combining of family drama on top of the fact that some of us live far away from each other it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a Christmas Carol ending Christmas for me this year. But on a different note I just think this movie was really good and I gave it a high rating. It’s good for the kids to watch and probably for the adults too who need a reminder of what’s important and that sometimes it’s never too late to try to make up for the mistakes you’ve made. If you watch this movie and it makes you think about calling up a sibling that you said something pretty mean to them and what to apologize to them then this movie has done its job..lol

I think it was good I like the animation the style was okay the story is good I didn’t like the songs but then again I don’t really like musical Movies I’m not a fan of them it just makes me wanna skip the singing parts of it overall it was a 5/10 it’s not a bad or a good score it’s okay in my opinion I would watch it again

Dough I must addmit that I skipped almost all the songs including Scrooge's for two main reasons
1. I was a few days before two exams (yeah both in the same day) and I couldn't take a break longer than an hour
2. I felt like most of them were just thrown away in the movie without giving more deabth to the story or characters

I dunno, I just think it's unfair to properly judge a product in it's entirety of you skip/fast forward scenes and songs regardless of their relevancy. If it's a musical film with a story, it should be judged on it's plot, writing, and how the songs work their way into the narrative. Skipping said songs in a musical film just seems like a lackluster way to try and watch said movie. Even if you had exams coming up, why not just watch it fully in a few separate sittings? 🤷
