This is why I don't like point sparring tournaments. Even a champion karateka like Tanaka cannot see if a technique really would have landed. At 0:52 you can see that Machida blocks the backfist strike, but Tanaka awarded a point to Shimizu. Another example is at 4:22. Ogata scores a point with a jodan gyakuzuki but you can clearly see that his wrist is bent, so that would not have hurt Machida if this had been an MMA fight, and yet Ogata is awarded a point.
