@1:05 next to the bakery is where my dad's office used to be. 508 / 352 Broadway (they changed the numbering). Monticello was a great place to grow up. A lot of diversity and a lot to do. Swimming in the summer, skiing in the winter. There is wealth there too, but.. It's all hidden. I haven't been back since ~2009 but a few of my friends still live in the area. When I moved out of NYC in 2017 to Florida, I actually regretted not driving up to Monticello and showing my wife where I grew up. The high school was fun. Sending a few kids a year to elite schools. The issue was / is that all the talent would leave. I think only a few of the kids from my classes actually stayed there - everyone else left.
@@mermaidlu5125 I love the Mountain Mall with Aldis and Dollar tree. All the high rollers shop there. One of my favorite places, and also the Walmart down the road is real nice!
@@mermaidlu5125 I remember the Apollo Mall quite vividly as well as a Farmer's Market, which is where I had my very first job interview ever. That place was maddeningly depressive and hollow; an unrecognizable, dessicated husk of what it used to be.
8:20 High Street. This used to be where the bluebloods lived long ago. Crack Central now. If you smell smoke or hear a banjo strumming hit the gas, blow the stop signs and get out of there!
I had to make a second comment because these videos nor the comments do that hell-hole any justice. I can tell you how atrocious the schools were when I was there. It was 1998 and we were still using the Apple II-E computers, and none of the teachers had a contract. The middle school was nowhere near big enough for the students that went there from Monticello,, as well as Wurtsboro. I was bullied relentlessly there, and it was the first ti me I honestly contemplated suicide. Racism is also a big problem there. I was 11 years old and a grown man called me a ni**er because I got into an argument with his son. Ironically, I was taught my whole life that the deep south is the epicenter of racism in America, but I have yet to encounter the racism down here as I did in Monticello.
I believe you I’m Latina and have been looked at very mean by Caucasian ladies at the DMV or doctors offices . It’s when you look your best and smell good that really gets them mad lol 😆 you know Sullivan has one of worse hygiene people in the state
I also used to lived there, and around 1999, my father beat me really bad and got locked up, and my mom sent my siblings and I away so the state wouldn't take us. Around 2007, we moved back there, and at that time, it didn't seem as bad as it does now. One thing I can say I never experienced racism in monticello. I live in CT now, and the racism is bad here. When I was in school, I had grown men calling me n...r because I was dating their daughters.
I live in Monticello but towards 17b I don’t talk or hang around anyone Monticello . I work in the next county and spend more time in other places then I do there which is a relief . Good thing to have a car and drive away everyday . People in Monticello are so stuck they love drama and like being poor and on drugs
@@mermaidlu5125 Oh my.....it just reminds of being in a open-air funeral home. I hate drama, so I usually stay in my house unless I'm at work or I have to go to the store. The people there were just so depressed and mean all the time.
The people make it worse. Take the worst elements of the ghettoes, the trailer parks, and suburbs, cut the collective IQ by ⅓, and make everything absurdly expensive, and then it will tragically make too much sense

There was nothing to keep us there unless we were rich business owners, especially well to do Jewish business owners like the hotels.
I'm from the city and recently drove by here and the Bloomingburg area on a camping trip. This has to be the worst poverty I've ever seen...
Yeah, needs a little Godly clean up and shine.
Upstate NY is neglected from the state because of NYC
It's a bit startling how the roughest looking places in NY State aren't in the City, but upstate.
I was never more grateful to escape there in 1998.
I moved there in 1980 and left 1999
Most of these places that are being shown have been fixed up and looks ten times better now...
This is my hometown - it was a wonderful place to live in the 60s-80s - not so much anymore
It was different back then now it’s so depressing .

😂😂😂 it’s so depressing
Don't forget to lock and load, and switch off the safety on your firearm.
My hometown sure does look depressing. 😢
Because it IS depressing.
The Catskills are shot to hell. This almost looks like West Virginia.
Time to clean it up. ❤🌸🍃🌸🍃🌸🍃
This is my hometown in the 90s. Fucking weird to watch this.

OMG it was beautiful i'm the 70s and 80s! What happened?
THIS is facinating!
Looks kinda decrepit.
The glory of upstate ny has faded. Doesn't help this video was filmed in the winter. Probably looks much nicer in july
Amsterdam ny looks worst!
No Troy wins that award.
Where is the good part ?
Ick. 😢
hasn't improved since 1971
