  • It is a great honour to welcome Dr Helen Fry to The Vintage Read Show!
We discuss her latest book, Women in Intelligence, a groundbreaking history of women in British intelligence that reveals their pivotal role in the first half of the twentieth century.
Support our guest by buying her book here:
    About The Author:
Historian and biographer Helen Fry is the author of The Walls Have Ears, Spymaster, MI9, and more than twenty books on intelligence, prisoners of war, and the social history of the Second World War. She regularly appears in media interviews and podcasts and has been involved in numerous documentaries.
    Book Description:
From the twentieth century onward, women took on an extraordinary range of intelligence roles, defying the conventions of their time. Across both world wars, far from being a small part of covert operations, women ran spy networks and escape lines, parachuted behind enemy lines, and interrogated prisoners. And, back in Bletchley and Whitehall, women's vital administrative work in MI offices kept the British war engine running.
In this major, panoramic history, Helen Fry looks at the rich and varied work women undertook as civilians and in uniform. From spies in the Belgian network "La Dame Blanche," knitting coded messages into jumpers, to those who interpreted aerial images and even ran entire sections, Fry shows how crucial women were in the intelligence mission. Filled with hitherto unknown stories, Women in Intelligence places new research on record for the first time and showcases the inspirational contributions of these remarkable women.

Just when I thought there was not anything new being covered about Women's war work, along comes a Dr Fry and she not doing Maths. No disrespect to Dr Hannah Fry. It depressingly unsurprising that women's historical contributions are played down, or ignored, so I look forward to reading this book. Also what a good communicator she is, and your enthusiasm for the subject matter really made this programme a winner.

I had this on while I did my ironing, a dull and mundane task elevated to something immensely enjoyable by the company I chose. Dr Fry is so knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic it was a real pleasure to listen to her. I’m definitely buying this book! That was quite a juicy little snippet about the Vatican involvement with the Allies, it certainly runs contrary to a lot of prevailing narratives!

Does it run contrary? If they considered themselves "neutral," why wouldn't they help people from both sides escape? And if both sides have it documented, as Dr. Fry says, then it would appear that's what they did. Or perhaps the Church is not a monolith and individual parishes made individual choices which the Vatican elected to ignore in favor of neutrality.

Thank you for this most interesting, and well-researched, intellectually stimulating, information on espionage and skullduggery in the wars of the twentieth century. The competition one often hears of male vs female, and who was "better" or should have been treated better in these situations was missing here and I am grateful for that and your fact-based, non-political discussion . In war, we are all called on to be better and more than we ever thought we could be, both male and female. So thank you for speaking fact without personal male vs female viewpoint involvement. You did well, both of you.

I loved your conversation and have ordered the book. My family and I saw the movie A Call To Spy directed by and highlighted three amazing women Virginia Hall, an Indian-British radio operator Noor Khan who was held in jail for 10 months and then sent to a concentration camp and shot in the head. The third was a Jew Vera Atkins who led the women spies (you mentioned her in your interview)
Two other books I’m currently reading - The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff and a Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell
Dr Fry is correct that the stories need to be told otherwise we would never know. I love history and I was so surprised about women who became spies.
Like all your videos I thoroughly enjoyed your interview. Both of you showed the joy and love of reading, researching and writing about those who can inspire us.

Thankyou for inviting her onto your show. She was the type of historian I really wanted to be but in Australia. 😢 Sadly, it didn't work out to be like that.

That was fascinating Shauna, so interesting. I would have loved to have been a Historian - I tend not to regret anything, but if I had one it would be this. I've been researching my family history since 2009... I've gone back to the early 1600s on two lines of my family and it's fascinating. I was always led to believe I came from a long line of Devon folk! Not so, we only go back two generations - We come from Kent, Birmingham, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and France (the French side were Huguenots, Protestants who had to flee France)

I've been doing the same for my family for the past few years and discovered similar surprises. We thought we were German all the way back but it turns out we're about half-German, half-Scottish/English borderlands, with sprinklings of French and Irish! Nice to find another family genealogist among the Shauna-ettes! (Something that might interest you: there is apparently a genre of genealogy novels which feature mysteries connected to family history so that the main character has to do genealogical research to solve a historical mystery and a present-day problem. I've only read one so far, but it was very interesting!)

Great topic and book. Many women in intelligence positions--dating back to WWII--were hired as "secretaries" but grew their roles within the intel communities.

Fantastic interview can’t wait to read the book. I just finished reading The Sisterhood and In True Face both about women in the CIA. Many same themes women were better at interrogation and turning agents. In True Face one of the assignments was made into the movie Argo and the agents actually went to the Oscars. I hope Dr Fry will have the same experience.
