Adding numbe r s to make it easier to answer...
    1. When they bring in your food. Do they take it out of your paycheck? By how much?
    2. What happens if you run out of food before the delivery comes in?
    3. Does the delivery come in at an exact time?
    4. What about the deisel, if your running low, how long does it take for it to be refilled? Is that taken from your paycheck?
    5. What's free time like?
6.What times do u need to be asleep?
    7. What are breaks like? On call 24/7?
    8. Do you ever work through the night/ have nightshifts?
    9. Do you need to evacuate when weather is bad? How is that done?
    10. What are you writing when you get a call? Westher forcast? Is there anything else that you write down without being too specific?
    11. where would someone need to got o appy for a lighthouse keeper?
    12. Do they really only give you a week notive from the time you are accepted to the time you work, or can the be negotiated so one can hive 2 week notice to their cutrent jobs? I might have misheard what Joe said in the video, so correct me if I was wrong about that.
    13. I've heard that keepers work 6 months straight, then are let go for breaks. Is that true? If it is, do they have you come back, or do you need to apply for somewhere else?
    14. What is the internet like out there?

      Here are your answers!
1 - we buy our groceries direct from the Save on Food site so all our expenses are our own.
2 - Run out of food and you go hungry! Lucky there are two of you so usually someone has some rice or potatoes kicking around.
3 - Nothing about lightkeeping is exact. Weather, and many other factors are unpredicitable so you never know when something happens. Occasionally you will hear a helo leaving the base but then never arrive because it hard to turn back due to weather. Part of being a keeper is being patient.
4 - diesel is scheduled once or twice a year. Boat Bluff usually keeps about 2 years worth of diesel on hand so it is rare it gets really low. The diesel is all part of station operations.
5 - free time is whatever you can do by yourself in your free time. Read, watch TV, work out, build model cars, whatever your imagination can come up with.
6 - I sleep around 6pm usually because I am up at 3am but your schedule is up to you as long as it works with the second keeper.
      7 - Breaks? Whats a break?
8 - The radio is on 24/7 but no one really does much between 11pm and 3am.
      9 - you never evacuate.
10 - Being a federal job, everything is writing. There are many many many reports that you need to do daily.
11 - just go to the jobs canada website and look up lighthouse keeper
12 - as soon as you are cleared for work, like the day you are cleared, like the hour the office hears you are cleared, they will give you a list of opportunities that could start the next day to several months ahead of schedule. It is up to you to choose what works for your schedule.
13 - In BC the job is 365 days a year. You can leave for your holiday but other than that, you are at your station. When you leave for your holiday you return to the same station. For relief it is different. You are posted somewhere for a period of time that could be anwhere from 2 weeks to 3 years. When a posting is done, you can return home or start a new posting somewhere else. If you return home, then you would take up a new posting at a different station when you decide to return. As relief you are not paid when you leave a station.
14 - most keepers use satellite internet which can depend on what provider you are using. Some stations do have government internet but it is not your personal internet and so is governed by government rules regarding government internet.
      hope that answers your questions.

I see a good collection of cooking wine in the background . Do lighthouse keepers have an alcohol problem because of the isolation ?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I personally don't drink so I really can't speak from experience. The Alcohol in the video was left from a previous keeper. I can't speak for others but the last thing you really want to be on a lighthouse is drunk. if an emergency were to happen and you were called to duty and you were intocxicated, lives are put at risk. Not a good idea.

If not for the lack of high speed internet (I play MMORPGs most of the time), I would have signed up as a lighthouse keeper. I like isolation, monotonous work routines, also keep pretty much to myself IRL. That I believe is at least a good match for working alone in remote locations. Where I come from, lighthouse keepers are almost extinct. There are only three manned lighthouses with one located in the territorial waters of a neighbouring sovereign country. Long story of how this came to be. There is some history but both countries are comfortable with this arrangement. The other lighthouse is manned by Police Coast Guard + Navy. Now there is some contention regarding the sovereignty of this particular lighthouse surprisingly with the same country mentioned above. The case was brought up to the ICJ (International Court of Justice) and the case was resolved with my country awarded control.
Many years ago in my mid 20s, I did apply but was rejected due to my age. The port authority was only looking for older people who didn't mind the low salary on top of the isolation. In reality, it's not really "isolated" per se. Lighthouse keepers here keep a 10 day on, 10 day off schedule. They have homes and families on the mainland where they can go back to for approximately 1/3 of the month.

We actually just got our fiber optic internet installed a few months ago. It is pretty quick and while I don't online game myself, I have been told it is decent for Roblox! haha.
We are here 365 days a year so you really do need to be good with the isolation. it can be days that you don't even need to talk to anyone and generally I am good with that. There are younger people on the lights now, maybe not 20 but I know of one who is 35.
