    Hey just stopped by on youtube for some class stuff, stumbled onto this playlist and now want to leave a comment. Your enthusiasm is a really nice change from just a stale reading, additionally, your pauses to further explore what you just read manages to keep me thinking and interest in the book. Awesome job!

    "If a man comes into my hut and defecates on the floor, what do I do? Do I shut my eyes? No! I take a stick and break his head..." Best line in the book. xD

    You are a great reader, and I appreciate you doing this. However, I am shocked by the way you present the missionaries in this story as "horrible." How horrible can it be that they hope to rid these people of the entrapment of their superstitions? The reason that the missionaries lived after 4 days and 7 weeks was because it was false gods that they were following. Perhaps they allowed them to stay because they wanted freedom from the oppression of their false religion and inwardly they yearned for Truth!

    • @strandedlantern
      @strandedlantern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The missionaries brought hegemony in the form of religion. They used Christianity as a weapon to disarm the Igbo. It was an insidious and deliberate move to undermine the native civilizations in Nigeria.

    • @ronriles1513
      @ronriles1513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@strandedlantern Perhaps they left the comforts of their own homes to bring schools and hospitals and the Bible because they cared about them. Achebe himself would not have been able to learn to read and write, attend college, and write this novel had they not. Yes, there are corrupt people in any organization, but to assign motive to an entire group is careless. Keep in mind that Achebe was a Christian, too. To attempt to indoctrinate students by assigning a false motive to the missionaries is to do what you blame the missionaries of doing: taking over a culture by infiltrating their education. You do a great job reading; please let students discern the meaning of these stories on their own. Your job is to teach them to read and to write; doing so gives them the freedom to interpret, just like Achebe's people were given the gift of doing. Thank you again.

    • @strandedlantern
      @strandedlantern  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ronriles1513 Achebe spoke Igbo. He wrote the book in English so people like us would read it and see what I just pointed out. It was his response to Heart of Darkness, which promoted White supremacy and racism. As a teacher, I feel like it's my job to expose oppression. The missionaries and other Europeans in the book are oppressors, if they weren't, we never would have this book in the first place.

    • @ronriles1513
      @ronriles1513 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strandedlantern He wrote because he didn't like the way his people were being portrayed. Period. It wasn't an indictment against the people who taught him a second language and so much more. As a parent, I expect you to teach reading and writing, allowing our students to come to their own conclusions. Do you want me to teach your child how to become a Christian in school? Then don't teach your ideology to mine. You are doing exactly what you accuse others of doing, you just excuse it because you believe yourself to be right. They certainly believed they were exposing the oppression of idolatry and superstition. It is exactly the same.

      @@ronriles1513 it's been a fun chat, Ron. I teach what I teach. If you don't want your kids to know that White, British missionaries are the bad guys of a story written by a man whose entire life was controlled by hegemonic factors perpetrated before his birth, then tell them not to stop by my channel. I am committed to exposing White supremacy and Eurocentic hegemony, and if you don't want to hear it, move along. These videos are not required for anyone to view. I haven't even taught this novel since 2015. I'm not even an English teacher anymore. I teach future teachers to be anti-racist educators these days.
