YM2203 has 3 FM channels and 3 SSG channels. To faithfully reproduce the arcade music would need Turbo Sound FM sound extension on ZX Spectrum, that has 2 x YM2203 sound chips. ZX Spectrum Next basically has Turbo Sound + 3 additional SSG channels, so lacks the FM part
For a better experience, go into the options on the title screen (press 8 or 9) and change to refresh rate to 60hz. Will play at the correct arcade speed and the music will sounds cery slightly less awful!
Yeah, great stuff. But really these kinds of ports just use the Next as a fairly generic framebuffer/sprite thing. There's nothing on the screen that has any real character specific to a Speccy. But 10/10 as a successful port. 👍 Sorry, I'm just one of those guys lol...
@@PaulTaylor1 totally entitled to your opinion. The Arcade version will always be king. I think it's just a case of "because i can tbh" works really well i thought. Thanks for your comments anyway.
@whatsnext128 yes, I wasn't really putting it down, it's just a certain category of port. I ported JSW to the Atari ST back in 1990, and made it look exactly the same as the Spectrum - not a single enhancement - and was very pleased with myself lol. There's a lot to be said for a labour of love like this. 👍🥳
i used to play this with my friend. he always won.
With 9 AY sound channels on the Next, I would have expected better music. But apart from that this looks very faithful.
@@MarcKloos yeah the music is off. It's free though so I will let it off.
Did the arcade machine use 9 channels?
@mrpositronia 6 channel. YM2203
