    It has to be XTC- no one else comes close to that title. If you don't know them here is a list of some of my favourite songs by them: Dear God, Senses Working Overtime, Love on a Farmboy's Wages, Rook, Respectable Street, Making Plans for Nigel, The Meeting Place, Life Begins at the Hop, Dear Madame Barnham, Season Cycle, Towers of London. They also had a side project called The Dukes of Stratosphear who did a 1980s version of 1960s psychedlia. Check out the documentary about them which is called This is Pop and is available on TH-cam.

    You'll recall I was 100% in agreement with you as Swervedriver. I've had an afterthought, which is very conflicting!! CHANGE OF HEART outta Canada. When we say 30 years we mean starting from the 80s though 😅 . I'm more in love with their 90s records Tummysuckle and Steel Teeth. But boy did these guys have some stylistic changes and great ideas over the years and still sounded so fresh.

    Ill never forget how I discovered Swervedriver… picked up a zine at a music store in Edmonton, and towards the back was an interview with this upcoming band, Swervedriver, in support for their debut album, Raise. I believe it was Adam, who told the story, but they talked about coming home from a gig, and coming across a couple who had ended up off the road, and stopping to help them. The man noticed their gear in the back and asked if they were in a band, and Adam said yes, so the guy asked their name. Adam gave a different name, cuz he thought the name Swervedriver might make the man think the band were messing with them. I thought that was hilarious so I went out and bought Raise the next day. Been a fan of the band ever since.

    Agree Swervedriver 100% hard to justify bands like The Pixies, Television, Live, Afghan Whigs cause they were all quite well loved and recognized. Heres some for ya if ya like something a bit grungey/postish/heavier.. Into Another... OR more metal leaning grunge Walking Giant. Their cd "Open Your Eyes" has just recently been introduced to streaming. Mariana Trench - "Subsuasion" is a classic album. Thorn Hill - "A Year In The Solution Room". Superb album! Headswim's 1st album "Flood" - very underrated! And how can I forget Milk!!! Rash and Tantrum were amazing records. Members from that band and Swerverdriver went on to form Skyscraper. More thoughts - Dust For Life, Paw, Stick, April's Motel Room, Sacrifice Isaac (94 record is brilliant), For Love Not Lisa.... gotta say Helmet, Quicksand, Hum and Failure in which case like anyone else who enjoys Swervedriver!

    Swervedriver is definitely more rock heavy than your typical "shoegaze" band. Mezcal Head is so good (throw Girl on a Motorbike on while you're cruising on the freeway on a summer night), but I have a soft spot for 99th Dream, which was their last 90s album and not released originally. It just recently has shown up on Spotify, at least in the US. It's more like a dream pop/groove rock fest.

    • @TheIdleTown
      @TheIdleTown 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I remember buying Raise on cassette when it first came out because I heard Rave Down on 120 minutes. So, it's my nostalgic go to, but I'll admit Mezcal Head is a better record. "Girl on the Motorbike" is one of those songs that if I don't listen to it, it's playing on the mixtape in my brain. Such a great song. The chord progression has always reminded me of Nick Drake's "River Man." I always thought 99th dream was Swervedriver doing their best Radiohead imitation. So, it never fully clicked with me, although those songs sounded when they play them live.

    For the past 30 years Sunny Day Real Estate or Jawbreaker would probably be my pick. Flawless discographies from front to back. Jellyfish and I would also say the Grays are other great contenders.
    Definitely XTC if we’re talking past 40-45 years

    XTC - Making Plans for Rick Beato (giggle)! Haha! Gotta get ya some humor there Rick! I like your pick of Swervedriver ...I also like Urge Overkill and Pavement! Liking Saffron I like Republica too. Had Kelli Ali stayed with The Sneaker Pimps, they might have been a choice but she didn't and so they just had a few hit songs rather than several. Queens of the Stone Age got their due as well...was hipong they'd have done more though.

  • @TheBestSoundEver

    They are my favorite band, so I can only agree but I would add to the list of underrated, Catherine Wheel, Delicatessen, Adorable, Tram, Strangelove and many others.
    Fame and success are not synonymous with quality and value and vice versa, in music as in life, especially today.
    A diamond is more difficult to find, it takes more commitment, effort and ability to recognize it.

    Rick, Being from near the canadian border, I'm surprised you have never done a video on the tragically hip. You would get a allot of exposure to Canadians because they are a national treasure. There is a new documentary on prime video about them and it's very well done.

    Hot Snakes (AKA Pitchfork 1986-1990, Drive Like Jehu 1990-1995) Rick Froberg's vocals are something to behold, guitar riffs are blinding and John Reis finds juxtaposition in call and response riffs with Froberg in a post rock, post punk, noise nik indie duo. Some accidentally classic rock moments as well.

    Everyone check out the band Denali, an indie rock band who had two albums on Jade Tree records in the early 2000s. They opened for Deftones at the height of their short-lived career. One of my all-time favorite bands and severely underrated. Listen to the songs "Gunner" and "Everybody Knows" first.

    Flaming Lips is definitely good, but their sound is definitely an acquired taste. Sometimes, they're too experimental for their own good. But my choice for most underrated band could be Live. Going back and listening to their songs, I think they were way ahead of their time. I remember back in the 90s, they were considered a one-hit wonder, but they had quite a few good songs and albums.
