Good thinking. I have wasted sooooo much time because the snap ring would not let the axle seat, catch on the 3rd groove. It is very tough! Being 11 and 21 degree days, I figured I would run the engine for 20 minutes, let it heat up with the axle still cool, but still no luck. I'm going to try to put the axle in the hub and try shoving it like you did. Fingers crossed!!!
nice work mate ! your perseverance is just like me ! I have a youtube channel 'GrooveOn' and have many Range Rover fixes, to which I need to also fix an issue that I have when driving which I am sure must be the CV joint. The noise I get is 'thud, thud, thud' and is relative to speed getting faster as I drive faster etc. I have checked the bearing and it seems good, I have new tyres on the front also. The noise is on the front right and gets quieter if I turn right and reduce the load on the right corner.

Nice work 💪🏻
Nice work. Surprised you not spin the hub while the shaft was out. Test the bearing
Saw some one remove the knuckle and it seemed a lot easier.
@GrooveOn yeah that’s definitely 110% the cv joint
