12" diameter is 36(pi) while 13.25" diameter is 43.89(pi) which is 21.92% more space. Trick is that you always need a burner that is slightly bigger than the pans diameter though. Also, for reference the 10.25" diameter is 26.27(pi) which is only 72.96% the space of a 12"
Fun fact, every Dutch oven (exception, camp ovens) Lodge makes has a lid size that corresponds to the size of the lid a skillet would use.
    1qt DO to 6.5"
    2 qt DO to 8"
    5 qt DO to 10.25"
    5.5 qt Blacklock to 10.25"
    7 qt DO to 12"
    9 qt DO to 13.25"

I just was at my local target last night and saw 2 of the 13.25 skillets from lodge. I couldn’t find a price but I figured I would get one. The store employees had it priced wrong in their system for only $11.54. I asked the cashier if that was right and she basically said she didn’t care. I think target just started offering this size so some of the stores didn’t know what they had.... I bought both of the skillets for about $20... you can’t beat that!
I use a 15 inch for turkey, and 12 inch for everything else. I also use a 5qt, 7qt, and 9qt Dutch oven, plus several enameled ovens. I have WAY to many pans and pots lol. I’ll be trying the 13.25 out tonight with some burgers on my Webber!

that 13.25 makes a big difference. It is what we use for bacon. Also the bigger pan comes with the chef handle.

First, congratulations on using cast iron, best investment your daughter could give!! She will remember always, the awesome meals you make in them, and they will be around for generations!! I am single, and I use my lodge 6” skillet for a fried egg for a sandwich, or a burger patty, my 8 inch for biscuits, it used to be my go to, but then I got the 10 inch, and I use that daily for breakfasts, 3 eggs, 2 hash browns, bacon, and I use my 10” griddle for pancakes, grilled cheese, and quesadillas. I do occasionally cook for my neighbor, I have a 12 inch I got for camping, but have yet to use.

I love the 13.25" for searing two thick steaks at once. I enjoy the lighter weight 12" Chef Collection. I couldn't toss or flip food with the 13.25" but the Chef Collection 12" was doable. I hated the Blacklock handle design, it was too thin, too small, and even it was lighter than the Chef Collection, the Blacklock was not a good tossing/flipping pan.

i have both and was also surprised at the size difference. my go to is the 10.25 but i use the 13 for bacon and hamburger. 12 for potatoes or smaller dishes

My go to large pan is the 12" lodge... but not the 12" Lodge you're thinking of. I'm talking about the 12" Lodge Chef Collection skillet. It's not quite as heavy as the standard 12", the handle is a little longer, and the sides slope a bit more, (great for basting meat). Same Lodge quality but for me the lighter weight was different. When I picked up the standard 12" at the store I just couldn't not see myself dealing with that day to day. Kudos to you guys who are using the big 12", the 13.25" and the my gawd the 15"!

I have a lot of cast iron skillets but my biggest is a 14.5" Lodge Blacklock skillet. I mostly use it in the over for roasting or pizza, but I will use it on the largest stovetop burner too. The Blacklock skillets are lightweight so the 14.5" is surprisingly easy to handle.

I scored a 15 1/4" Lodge at a yard sale. Its a monster. And yet they do make them bigger. I will say that the big ones do hold a huge amount. I used to think a #10 skillet was pretty big.

Picked up an excellent condition slightly used Lodge 13.25 inch Skillet for 20 bucks which was a very fair price I do believe. I plan to do up a variety of home made Pizzas in it mostly. I have other cast iron pieces to do other cooking which is just as much a pleasure as it is a convenience. Having different sizes and cast shapes of cast iron on hand is like having multiple tools in the tool box and it can make all the difference.

I wish Lodge made a 14'' skillet too. The 15'' is a little too big for my stove. A 14'' would fit best and offer more cooking surface than the 13.25''.

I have (among others) a Lodge 12" and also a Lodge 15" that I scored from HomeGoods ... it was like $29.99 instead of $59.95 [they're 'seconds' ... Factory Defects , almost always some ridiculously minor mark or slightly imperfect seasoning, whatever, they're cast iron skillets not artistic pieces for the wall...] - but let me tell you, that 15" is almost TOO BIG ... On the scale it's a bit over 11lbs ... well I am obviously getting old because that 11.2lbs feels like 112 ... but it's a lot of fun to cook with! I will have to search out the 13.25, hadn't seen one! As it happens, I just now picked up a 12" for a birthday present tomorrow, hope she likes it!

  • @bubbalo3388

Yeah I debated between the 12, 13.25, and 15. Ended up getting the 13.25 because I have a large family and entertain. The 12 was too small and the little extra room on the 13.25 made a difference and still fit on my stove and still able to use my other burners. The 15 was too big and would block another burner and would be offset on the eye.
Also in deciding on size you need to take into consideration the weight between them plus the added weight with food in them.

  • @midwest1228
    @midwest1228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have the 12 inch version as well. I can cook just about everything in it... However, for a large family, bigger might be better.. For example..I can sear 2 really nice sized Ribeyes on the 12 inch, but it lacks space for a 3rd.. Recently married with extended family..I now need that extra space.. Do you feel like the 13.25 would work?

i use my 10 inch way more then my 12 but out side on the smoker or in the oven 12 is king. 13 1/4 on a stove top if you preheat in oven, maybe. it would take for ever to heat up there. so to me smoke or oven like, I use my 12. but these i do steaks in my 2 in my 10 inch and 1 in my #6 pan cakes, baking pizza on and on.
