I feel thankful for everything you said about Rembrandt! After trying various brands for over a year, this one remains my top favourite. They're cheaper than most professional watercolours in Europe, have a very balanced colour range as well as outstanding performance and transparency. I wish more people talked about these paints.
I'm so glad! Yes, I completely agree and they are my go-to now, except for colors that they don't make, like some of the primatek Daniel Smith ones. But for the other colors, I'm going straight to their 20ml tubes, fantastic value!
Thank you as always love your videos. My favorite not known item is a 3 tier ceramic appetizer serving set from Amazon. Cheap, but they are flat ceramic rectangular plates on a lovely holder, i use one for warm, one for cool and one for earth tone mixing. Beautiful, practical and so lovely
Royal Talens doesn't get enough love! My first watercolours were a set from Van Gogh and honestly I still use it. Been using Rembrandt oils since I was a child because in Spain they are relatively affordable and super super soft. Love the Derwent drawing pencils, they are really some of my favourite ones.
I agree on all of the above! I got excited when you talked about the Escada (sp) travel brushes! I have one, and it is my favorite out of all of my brushes. I can honestly say that I reach for it EVERY time I paint. Cannot say enough about it! I am still wanting the sketchbook, but I keep putting it off just due to shipping costs. One day, in a weak moment I will actually put it in my cart and push the purchase button! I did get that palette and it is wonderful! I am still trying to figure out how to customize the outside to fit my aesthetic, as red isn’t my favorite color. Other than that, it is perfect. I love the closure on it too. As far as YOU, Irit, you are such a delight to listen to! I just adore your personality and wit. Plus, you are so generous in sharing your knowledge and experiences, so thank you!
Thank you Kana! You're too kind! Did you notice cult pens have free shipping over 70£?perhaps pick up some presents in addition to the sketchbook? I'm glad you love your escoda brush, they are fantastic ❤️❤️
Yes! I always wondered why almost noone talk about Rembrandt. They are SUCH good paints and a very good deal. I think I paid like 9euros (on average, some are more some are less, obviously) per 20 ml tube at Gerstäcker, which is a wicked deal for an artist grade paint. I do not have too many of their colors yet, but I love the ones that I have, and this definitely is a brand that I will be purchasing in the future as well. As for Fabriano, I have not tried the Vergatone, but I do have a sketchbook of their's that I quite enjoy (it's a plain black one, I have no idea what it is called) and I absolutely love their watercolor paper, the very basic stuff that is simply called Fabriano Watercolour and is 25% cotton. My favorite paper of all is Canson Heritage, and right after that comes the Fabriano Watercolour.
Wow that is a great deal for those paints. I also don't understand why they are not talked about more. I will definitely try the watercolor paper you mentioned, sounds like a good find for me!
@@iritlandgraf Yes, it is a great deal. And I just checked out the Austrian Gerstäcker store, and it costs the same there. So if you are looking for a good deal, there you go. 😊 I get like 90% of my art supplies from them, because I find that they usually have the best prices and a huge selection of watercolors and watercolor papers.
@@iritlandgraf I also love the Canson Heritage, together with Arches, and Saunders Waterford, which is a cold pressed paper (from theSt Cuthberts Mill), it's my favorite paper.
I think it's for fashion. if someone famous in the world comments on a specific brand, everyone follows the trend. I myself wondered why no one talked about the new colors that were released and so many others that have been replaced and improved.
I understand your love of Fabriano of less than 100% cotton. I haven’t tried the sketchbook, but am a huge fan of their Studio 50% paper, especially for Plein air in our humid climate. Now I’m going out to try some of your suggestions.
I’m in love with Derwent pencils.... I just discovered the Drawing Pencils and Graphitint 4 weeks ago and have finally collected both sets (except the white, both sold out), but they’re sooo creamy and lovely to use, and the colour palette ❤️❤️❤️❤️. I already had and enjoyed the 36 Inktense tin from last year... but... yeah, Derwent are dreamy... and I LOVE their pencil smell!
Hi, Irit. Great video! It has helped much with the choice of pencils for which I am a beginner. For watercolor, I Iike using Van Gogh and Rembrandt to complement my Sennelier & Isaro palette. . I especially like their dusk colours.
I like that Inktense is permanent on fabric. I love the drawing and Graphitint pencils. I sent an uncle the tinted charcoal, and he wasn't too impressed with them. Not sure why, except he said the leads were hard, and the colors weren't varied enough. I have yet to try that set. I enjoyed this video very much!
He's right, they are hard. For people who do full sketches in thick charcoal sticks these would be probably disappointing or not soft enough. I mostly like adding linework with them and for that the hardness is perfect. Some of the colors are a bit similar, but one doesn't have to grab the full set, I have the smaller 12 one.
@@iritlandgraf three nieces bought him the 24 set as a late birthday gift. He has a wonderful drawing talent. I guess we should have started with a few pencils. He did say he loved some of the colors for his nature drawings. I am not saying they are bad, they just weren't what we were expecting. I love all my Derwent pencil sets. I also have the Inktense blocks and the watercolor pencils. I love watching artists talk about their favorite supplies and why. I also love reviews of art supplies. You have a lovely voice and I enjoy your videos.
Escoda brushes were a spontaneous gift to myself a while back, i felt a little bit guilty about such an impulsive purchase but after using them for so long I can say it was the best investment I made for my painting! A good set of brushes can work wonders for your art!
First, that color looks wonderful on you.. I love my Rembrandt pallets. The colors are incredible I haven’t tried the sketchbook, but it sure is tempting. I love my Museum Acquarelle pencils but. I don’t like Crayons I and II. I suppose I don’t know how to use them. Finally, I have two of the pallets you show but without the inserts. I just ordered two of the ones you show. I really like my pallets, but I can see where you triple its use with the insert. Buyers beware as mine is the same price as yours, and it’s easy to mix them up. Finally, thank you for the heads up on the beautiful "coloring book." What gorgeous work! Thanks, Irit, for all.
Thank you so much Mariangela! I'm glad you love your paints and other supplies. As for the neocolor, mine were neglected for sometime and now I discovered new ways to play with them. Perhaps yours will inspire you again some day!
Love the tinted charcoal pencils ...I agree way less mess. I really love their intense travel pans...it’s like a love child between watercolor and ink.
Van Gogh are my top recommendation for classes of beginners along with Sonnet, Ladoga and Rosa. All of them perform well and can be purchased online. Fabriano is my favorite paper by far.
I love love LOVE my Van Gogh pocket boxes. I've been using (and still use) my Pelikan Watercolour set and usually always used them like the opaque ones (which you probably know, too. They're frequently used in school art classes here in Germany [BTW 👋👋 from Germany] ) The basic pocket set of the Van Gogh was the first I ever bought outside of that and I know they're not actually artist grade ones, but are definitely a step above and a good was to erase into the more artist grade stuff.
Lovely video. I have bought a couple of those items on your recommendations in the last few months. Notably, the Van Gogh paints, graphitint pencils and a few museum aquarelles. I'd love one of those sketchbooks to try as well, maybe down the track a bit. Thanks again!
I love the products from the Royal Talens company, especially the Van Gogh paints! Luckily they are very easy to find here in Brasil! I haven’t used the Rembrandt watercolors yet but seeing your video just made me wanna try them! This cobalt violet looks incredible 💜
That sweater! So gorgeous! 😍✨ I really need to try this sketchbook at some point, it sounds wonderful & looks so beautiful to paint on! I really like Grumbacher products as one that doesn’t get much exposure.. . I have a few of their things & they are all really superb quality! I want to try the Rembrandt watercolors one day as well! I love the work of Julia Barminova I think she is an ambassador for Royal Talens & she uses them almost exclusively I think.. . I really love their eco line brush markers! Thanks for another art forage around beautiful products! 🎨✨🤗🌸🌷💌
What a great idea for a vid! I totally agree about Derwent drawing and graphitint, beautiful colours and soft easy to use. I have to give a shout out to Royal Talens Van Gogh mixed media paper (it can handle anything!) and Platignum Studio fountain pens (for me, perfectly weighted and inexpensive). Thanks for sharing 👍
Hello Irit- I really enjoy your videos. So easy & relaxing to listen to. For my fave product that I don’t think gets enough credit: I love the Pelikan pan watercolor sets...the transparent set that Ive had for many years and now the opaque, both are 24 color sets. These are not technically “artist grade” but I put them in my “very good to excellent, but not pro” category. On Amazon, the 24 color transparent set sells for $43.00 & the opaque sells for like $15-$20 less. I have to say, I had purchased my Pelikan transparent set back in the late 80s and hadn’t used it since maybe the mid 90s. I took it out a few years ago and it was as if I had used it the day before. No degradation at all, no cracking or anything. The colors are beautiful and can certainly compete with the more expensive artist quality paints in terms of how they lay down & do the beautiful things wcs do, but there are no lightfast ratings, even though Pelikan says they are lightfast & use quality pigments. So these are for anything other than paintings that would be sold or displayed anywhere near sunlight. And also because they use unspecified pigments they may not mix as well as some of the higher quality artists colors🤗👍
Yeah, Da Vinci is really hard to get a hold of. Sadly UK Suppliers aren't that great for me personally either. The exchange rate and shipping to switzerland make supplies from the UK pretty pricey.
Thank you for another great video- I have learned so much from you! In the Rembrandt water colors, do you use the Chinese white or the titanium? And among the supplies I enjoy that I haven’t heard much about on other channels is Da Vinci Red Rose Deep- I have tried many brands of permanent rose but that’s the one I always come back to. They are a US. company and their prices are very reasonable here but may not be in Europe, but might be interesting to check out.
Loved this but I just gotta say.... OMG!!!! That last pencil lead you sharpened! I'm in love. I've been looking for a sharpener that can do that. It would be so much nicer than me exacto blade hahaha. Thank you for this info.
Rembrandt has one of the nicest pocket box type sets I've ever seen. Not only the case, which is gorgeous and very solid built, but the color selections and quality of pigments. Even the brush is gorgeous. I've been tempted by it many times even though the last thing I need is another set of watercolors.
I love Derwent products, they definitely need some more love. I really enjoy their Inktense pencils and Coloursoft range (specifically the portrait set), it's a shame they tend to get overshadowed by other brands such as Prismacolor and Fabercastell.
I totally get your adoration of a long pencil points! I bought a sharpener from MUJI a while ago and ended up running around my appartement looking for more pens to sharpen... :D
My plain old Canson XL mixed media pad 98 pound. Over time I’ve come to appreciate that it handles every medium I’ve thrown at it! I feel I use it mostly for sketching and color studies, but it really has become a “part of the palette” for me now, like a favorite paint or brush.
I’m so happy to have tried some of your suggestions...the palette, I love and bought a spare also..😂. Now I think I need another spare. The pencil recommendations are spot on also. And Van Gogh/Rembrandt - love them both!! And I just ordered 2 of the Farbriano journals from Cult Pens!! THey had the white back in stock so I got 2 A5 size witht the US 10% off coupon. Can’t wait to try them!!! Oh, and just made a Jacksons order for more of the Museum Aquarelles! You and Her Billowing Heart are hard on my bank account...😅😂. But truly I love that you’ve never steered me wrong Irit! Love your channel...🥰
I just got the synthetic Escado brushes so excited to use them. Thank you for reviewing the Watercolor pencils. Once my Stadler set is used up I will be replacing with the Museum Collect from Car Ache. Sorry my spelling 😬😬
This was a very informative and lovely video. I have to commend you for always giving more affordable choices for people who are in a tight budget and also for giving credit to other artist where you get your inspiration from. Thank you for keeping it real ❤️ I agree with all your choices specially with Rembrandt watercolor they are superb in my opinion .
I love the van Gogh paints I consider them full artist grade. I still need to get more but not as easy in Canada. I’ve never seen the Rembrandt line although I can start looking. Availability by geographic location effects things a lot. I love the Derwent drawing pencils! Fun video thanks.
maybe, US/Canada M. Graham & Co is an alternative. I must say, I don't know much about this brand, because I don't have them available here in Europe. But, first of all, I think, it is ok to choose a brand nearer to oneselve, to avoid all that shipping and such (mostly also effects price), secondly, I heard from some artists using them. It might be, some special colours you would prefer from brands like DS or Schmincke. but the basic colours must be good - as far as I had heard
You have me wanting yet more Derwent sets, lol. Have you tried their Color Soft line? I'm curious what the difference is between the colored drawing pencils and the color soft, which are a "colored pencil". I love all their products ive tried but im just curious what the difference is. Also my underrated product would be Princeton Aqua Elite brushes. I absolutely adore them and in the US they are very inexpensive. I have the travel brush set and a few others and no matter what I compare them to, they are still my favorite, and I never see anyone mention them more than in passing.
I'm sorry Meg, I haven't tried the colors soft and probably won't, since I have good coloring pencils I enjoy. The drawing set seems to be really pigmented and soft, offering an earthy natural colors, I think they also say very light fast. From my familiarity wihh the brand I'd bet the colorsoft pencils are good. However, if you have pencils you enjoy, not sure they are superior.
So as fate would have it, Lindsey Weirich put up on Instagram that she was using the drawing pencils so I asked her as well. She says the drawing pencils are thicker and drier than the colour soft, like the difference between a conte and wax pencil. So I figured I would pass along the info since it was so funny to find the answer by accident the next day.
I was happy to see this. It confirms my own opinions of these products. I have recently discovered the Van Gogh line and even though I know they are considered a student line and I have tons of artists grade paints I really enjoy them. I started with the new dusk colors, then added the 20 tube set to them. I have been wanting the Graphatint for a while. Also, I have had the palette in my Amazon cart since I saw it a few weeks ago. I love my Escoda Versatil travel brushes and my Dahl 155 sharpener. Thanks for the information. I will probably also purchase the other sharpener.
Glad you enjoyed Kim! I completely agree. I have a palette of Van Gogh and I pull it out immediately when I sit and paint with my 4 year old. They are just as enjoyable as artist grade for a fraction of the price.
@@iritlandgraf the colors are vibrant, the paint consistent, the amount and price is on point. They have even gotten some sparkle colors. Just love them.
Thanks, from right to left (bottom to top ?) the first two purply pinks are limited edition handmade watercolors that are no longer availabe sadly. Then Holbein brilliant pink, Shinhan Pass Bright Red, two more old limited edition handmade paints and Shinhan Pass shell pink is the last :)
I had said before these were expensive in the states. Well as it turns out it's more expensive on Jackson's because they only have pans and 10ml tubes and the 10ml tubes are $2-3 more than they are here. I can buy them at a good price here though, which I never checked and I can get 20ml tubes here. So I just ordered 4 to try out:)
I just found your video and I found it super interesting! Thank you for it! I am a coloured pencil artist who loves watercolours but they don’t seem to love me back... So I will mention supplies I know well and use often. Derwent has a new pencil line called Derwent Lightfast, which compares to Caran d’Ache Luminance. They have unique, complementary colours and I would love to add them to my collection of pencils, which includes the wood box sets of Caran d’Ache Luminance , Pablo and Supracolor Soft, the complete Faber-Castell Polychromos, and quite a few Graphitint. The sharpener... I totally get the fascination people feel for that those looong pencil tips, BUT when we only work with (very expensive) pencils, these sharpeners are killers! They eat the pencils at the speed of light as the angle removes a lot of wood every time we turn the pencil in the sharpener. I have a Derwent Super Point Mini but I rarely use it now. I use a Tgaal pencil sharpener as we can adjust the angle of the sharpening and get needle sharp tips that are precious when working on tiny subjects or details. I am a HUGE fan of Fabriano papers. I only draw on Artistico HP 300gsm as most professional coloured pencil artists as the quality is outstanding! I hope this information will be helpful to someone out there! 🌸
Thanks Chris for all the great info! I hope it will help others too! Yes I agree there is waste in that crazy sharpener, although I think it's mostly wood, as the lead stays rather thick it seems. Thanks again!
So nice to see you in your pretty pink sweater Irit. Well, now I have to really try the Fabriano sketchbook. You always recommend the most wonderful products. I got the Derwent drawing pencil in yellow ochre and it’s just so buttery! I always pick up a few open stock items that you suggest when I’m ordering and I always love them. I’m loving my palette and thinking of getting another one for sure. It’s the best palette ever!! I might pick up that incredible pencil sharpener. Those points would really make me happy too! I can’t think of anything you left out but honestly, get most of my recommendations from you🤷🏻♀️. Thanks so much for this lovely video.✊🏾💕
Fantastic! Glad you summarized your favs for all of us maximalists! Do you have fav sheet paper? I’ve seen many of your vids & just trying to recall. Recently purchased the intense 1 pallet with interesting colors in pans. Great used with little brush after paint dried for that little boost of color needed somewhere so getting the set 2 soon. Yes love the long points! Palomino pencils have long sharpener-2 step process and include spare blades plus catchment in a little size for travel! A little pricey but well worth it along with their pencils-love the silver for writing plus the black & white for drawing. The white is a great dark line to show under water color for spontaneous pics.) PS love the pink on you! Great color & so perfect for you with red hair painting lovely bright things!
I stumbled across QOR watercolour paints a couple of years ago and ended up with the full range. They are a different formulation than most but have beautiful rich colour pigment and flow. The price has gone up since I first bought them but they are still reasonable for the quality. I do agree with you on your love of the Derwent pencils. I started with the INKTENSE and expanded from there as I can afford it. I haven't tried the tinted charcoal yet but will put them on the list. I'm also going to hunt down that palette! TFS
I'm glad you're enjoying them Brenda. In Europe Qor are the most expensive per ml, I agree they are lovely and I always recommend their sets as they are good value.
I am based in Italy, and here too Rembrandt paints are quite affordable, gotta love those big 20 ml tubes! Do you have their Oxide Black, and if so how do you think it compares to Daniel Smith's Lunar Black?
Hi from neighbouring Austria 😀 I haven't tried their oxide black, I should. Van gogh version is not as granulating as Lunar black, I didn't like it very much...
Yay, Dahle 133 - best sharpener ever! Call me crazy but I even take it with me on travels. Super, super great. An art supply I really love and that‘s not widely featured as art supply (rather as drawing supply for kids) are the Faber-Castell erasable pencils. People all over TH-cam rave about the Col-Erase (some even say they are superior to the Faber-Castell‘s if they even mention them) but I compared both brands and cannot find any difference. What’s more, in Germany where I live they‘re so much cheaper than the Col-Erase ones. So I‘d definitely recommend them as an alternative for everyone who loves to sketch with erasable pencils.
I got the tinted charcoal pencils after watching your old vid I think. I managed to find them on an amazon warehouse deal. I also love their drawing pencils, the colors are fantastic, I’ve had those for a few years. Same with the Graphitint, I got a set of those really cheap on clearance maybe 5 years ago and I just finally got the Graphitint paint pans from Cult Pens a few weeks ago. Now I’m longing for the Fabriano book.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying! I do get a small commission if you use my links to Amazon.com or Jackson's, but not every shop offers affiliate links :)
i tend to buy smaller tubes of paint because i'm not yet sure if i'll like the specific version of colour just yet. but a while ago i bought my first 15ml tube of watercolour (the largest i have) of holbein's marine blue PB16 (phthalo turquoise) because it was the first colour that i felt like i couldn't live without. and nowwwww... partly because of you Irit, hehe, i recently purchased a 20ml tube of Rembrandt's cobalt violet, YAY!!!! :D i'm so happy the tube i got was not a dud. the formulation and the hue, and the consistency, and the granulationnnnn~ it's all so perfect! thank you for being so passionate about it because i am definitely overjoyed with my purchase :D
Great video! Thank you for sharing your favorites, it really helps us all to decide what to spend our money on, since I, for one, want to buy it all! I would say Turner Watercolor paints, Creative Mark Mimik watercolor brushes, and the Paul Rubens empty watercolor palette. These are my go too on a daily basis unless following a tutorial using a different WC brand. I buy most supplies at Jerry's Artarama online.
@@iritlandgraf Hi ! Here is the link to this palette. I love it because the wells are so long you can easily mix and dilute paints. I've bought several to use for different brands of paints. www.amazon.com/Paul-Rubens-Watercolor-Moisturizing-Independent/dp/B082LVLXC5/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2QCPVGIUJ4FNJ&dchild=1&keywords=paul+rubens+palette&qid=1602979324&sprefix=paul+rubens+pa%2Caps%2C393&sr=8-2
I have and I am loving all these products. I also love my Winsor & Newton Inks. I have the Henry Set and have added a few colors plus gold. I can use my dip pens, brushes and even cotton buds. They just go with everything else that I have and use.
So happy to see someone talking about the rembrandt tubes...ive been wondering if i should get a few tubes as an upgrade and cannot find any reviews online!
I like Royal Talens watercolors. The student line, Van Gogh, rivals artist quality. I especially like the color selection and larger 20 ml tubes of the Rembrandt artist line. Availablilty is the biggest reason I don't use R. Talens brands. I live in the US and the selection at retail & online stores is very low, especially in the Rembrandt line of watercolors. A local art supply vendor said he's historically had trouble getting in Royal Talens products.
A lot of people say Van Gogh are better than the Cotman watercolours for beginners. I see a lot of people using cotman first, which is fine, i did it too, but if I was to start now, I'd rather been recommended Van Gogh more than i was Cotman. Royal Talens is a fantastic brand, I love it, and when I switched to professional grade I only bought Sennelier (another overlooked brand tbh, it's fantastic if you paint in layers) was on sale. Maybe in the future i'll save up and get some Rembrandt to try!
I agree, Van Gogh is far superior to Cotman. I think Cotman is just really widely available globally, whereas Van Gogh is more common in the EU. Sennelier are beautiful and at least in Europe quite affordable.
@@iritlandgraf Edited to say I'm from Portugal. 🙋♀️ I love my Sennelier paints! I use them when i know I'll be doing layers, and the paints are really beautiful and delicate. I do wish they had more single pigment colours, but I dont remember having a lot of muddying up when painting. I know some people stay away from Sennelier, because they have honey on their formulas. Personally i don't mind honey, my favourite watercolours are White Nights (i just can't travel with them because the heat makes them even goopier and they run everywhere). Do you still use paints with honey (since i know you don't use paper with gelatin coating, i can't remember if you've ever talked about paints specifically)? What's your views on it? Also, can you please write down the name of the fabriano paper? I couldn't understand it and I'd like to try it 🥰
I am using what I have left but don't intend to buy them anymore. I cannot say I feel so strongly about using small amounts of honey for products as I feel about most other uses of animals. I do know the industry is problematic in different aspects like environmental issues of honey bees taking over habitats of other bees, cruelty of clipping Queen bees and posting them to faraway beehives. Also honey is meant for the bees and we take it from them feeding them some cheap sugary replacement. As I said, problematic. I'm happy to have other wonderful brands that don't use any animal products so it's not at all a sacrifice for me, although I do love Sennelier and White Nights and enjoy the ones I have.
@@iritlandgraf I see. I should maybe investigate a bit more about those practices. Thankfully White Nights pans are full size, so there's quite a lot of paint for me to go through. Sennelier is another story, since i've loved the palette a lot and it's not as full 😥 Thank you for your answers, it's always a pleasure to watch the videos you make! 😊
Ya I went and got one of those sketchbook after you showed yours. They were sold out accept for the orange so I got that one. I wanted white but the orange turned out to be nice too! I live in the US but they were on sale and US got an additional percentage off so I ended up not paying extra for shipping. Haven’t used it yet but I really like the looks of it.
@@iritlandgraf I think I’m going to get that pallet you showed us today too... I’ve been going round and round... I liked the 33 well one... have you seen that one? It’s a 33 well mijello, all slanted wells. But I was hesitating because you can’t move them around. Plus a needed a little more than 33. I think the one you showed will work, thanks! I hadn’t seen that one not even with all my searching on amazon!
I too have found Van Gogh tubes very inexpensive for some colors, and they list the pigment color. They also have some specialty colors. Regarding the watercolor book by Fabriano, from the link you gave I cannot tell which book is the watercolor book. Could you provide more details on what the exact name of it is? Thank you, great video!
Lovely video! Thanks for sharing! I love Rembrandt watercolours, they are mostly very pigmented and vibrant. Just avoid the Permanent Lemon Yellow (PY184), which is suppose to be a permanent pigment, but the Rembrandt version turns greyish after a few weeks in sunlight exposure (As described in Handprint website, I did my own tests and this issue still exists), also the Viridian is underwhelming, too weak and very hard to rewet.
Thanks for the tip! Thankfully both are colors I don't like so all good :) My favorites are their granulating colors, French Ultramarine, oxides, cobalts, those are lovely!
@@iritlandgraf Me too, the granulation from Rembrandt paints are gorgeous. There's another paint from Talens I love, is the Black Indian Ink, which is the best I've tryed so far, it is waterproof and the most pigmented.
Hallo!!! Grüße aus Wien! Another teaching artist in Austria recommends to his students Rembrandt (I think, the 3rd brand, he had listed). But Lukas he told me, not so much. Altough he finds their oil paints very good. but not the water colours
Hey Funny Girl!! So lovely to meet another local! I prefer Rembrandt to Lukas as well, I only use Lukas because their Naples yellow red is lovely and unique, and their cobalt turqouise is ridiculously affordable and nicely formulated. Everything else I've tried from them (not a lot, but probably 4-5 more colors) I wasn't amazed by. I think they are very cost effective, so for tight budget a good option.
Irit I just got the Dahle pencil sharpener you recommended and I’m so disappointed. I have to put the same pencil in 3 times to get an semi acceptable point. Is this your experience or do you think I got a defective item? I don’t want to have to return it because by the time I pay the shipping and the labor involved it is not worth it to me. I’m now afraid to try the other one you recommend. What do you think I ought to do? Thanks, love your work Carol
Sorry to hear! I had no issues with it. Perhaps take a closer look, there is a screw you can adjust for getting a sharper point. I will try and maybe do a video about these so you can see if yours is defective or not…
Van Gogh got more coverage than Rembrandt so far, haha. I bought a 12 halfpan Rembrandt palette, because the quality of Van Gogh for the price is so great and got me interested. It turned out to be my favorite palette ever ♥ got the Landscape set and added Quin Rose and Chromium Oxide Green.
I'd like to throw my all time favourite wood-pulp paper in here: Clairefontaine Etival 300gsm in cold pressed or rough I use it all the time, I love the texture and it works perfectly for my use. The best thing is, they offer big 100 sheet blocks! There are also 50 sheet A4 sets on amazon.de for 25€. I like it way better than the pricey Arches. I was so sad when I tried it and it soaked up all the paint. I used DS Undersea green and I couldn't even see the color separation on the arches.
The palette is wonderful to hear about! I currently have so many different pallates, and many do not have the removable full and half pans, and I really wish I could have started with something like this, especially since I'm finding I really love full pans, but still have a lot of 1/2 pans
Gelatos gel crayons, spray inks and India ink are the art supplies I hardly her about as any more.oh and watercolor brush pens(like arteza real brush pens).
What do you do with a typewriter? I have never seen a mint green one before. I really enjoy my Escoda brushes, and I recently ordered the Rembrandt Dusk Pink, which I can't wait to try out. I was happy to see the Derwent Drawing pencils on the list :). Thanks!
Hope you like your new goodies! I mostly use my type writer for journaling on scrapbook pages or art journaling pages. I don't use it a lot these days but it looks pretty and makes me happy 😀
@@iritlandgraf that was the first thing I noticed and had to click on your last video! I love typewriters and yours is in my favorite color. I need to get one like that one!
Do I like the video? Hahaha! Of course! As soon as you mentioned your topic I just knew you were going to mention the Fabriano Quaderno Vergatone - I haven’t even started in mine yet but I’m so looking forward to it! And ok, ok you and Alyona have totally made me itch to try out the Caran D’Ache Museum Aqua. pencils and I’ll put a few on my Christmas wish list. Loved seeing you in person today, love the blouse too - pink 💕💖 who would’ve have thought it 😉😁. Hooray for half term as I may get to finish your painting course that I started way back 😂🤣 . Thanks for sharing💕 all your recommendations, 🌈🎨 Valérie xx
Wonderful video, I enjoyed hearing your opinions about all these supplies. I've been thinking of getting a desk sharpener, and wondering what is the difference between these two - do you use certain types of pencils in each one? Does the Afmat create a longer point than the Dahle? Thanks for sharing!
I want to try the Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle pencils, but yeah not cheap. maybe for my 40th unless I just end up with a new graphics card, wouldn't turn down either lol 😛
Rembrandt is affordable in Europe but expensive in the US. I just got 48 half pan set on a steal of a deal. They are fabulous if you liked to layer and become more luminous . They are not like a bright modern watercolor on the whole like Da Vinci or DS. Imho
Really? Interesting. I always consider brightness a specific color quality as opposed to an entire brand. Every brand I have tried has some bright colors and some more natural earth tones or neutrals and everything in between.
Hmm, well I haven't tried Da vinci but I find Rembrandt very comparable to Daniel Smith. The big advantage of Daniel Smith is their huge color range and some of their primatek colors. Anyway, yes, obviously we all have different opinions and preferences.
@@iritlandgraf I have a primatek set and found if I mix mars black PBk 11 with any comparable color I get the same effect. So I won't buy them again. I have a mixture of M Graham, Turner. Cotman a couple QOR paints in my daily working pallet. These Rembrandt are going to be very precious to me.☺💜
I completely agree one can mix many colors without having to buy a tube, but some are great for convenience colors, and also, some are quite hard to dupe! At least for me ;) For example Hematite violet by Daniel smith is really unique and I haven't been able to mix something close...
The products I wanted to mention is not a necessity at all, but a luxury. I wanted to mention brass palettes from websites such as littlebrassbox, classicpaintbox or lapetitepalette. I love them for their craftsmanship, beauty, and customization, but they are labour intensive and costly. They do have a wait time of up to a year and I have patiently waited for my custom palettes. Of course they will not make a person a better painter, but they have made my painting experience more pleasurable. Having said that, i also enjoy my less expensive plastic and metal palettes too
I totally agree. I have been eyeing those brass palettes, I thought maybe for my next round birthday (only 9 years away lol). They seem like a real luxury item. My issue is that they probably work well for people who can commit to a limited palette, not me! I completely understand how they can make for a more joyful experience. Enjoy your lovely palette!
It is tough to commit to set of colours in a palette for sure! I love trying and experimenting too (why I love your channel and positive attitude) I justified my brass palettes as a birthday present and delivering a beautiful baby girl (push present) :) Take care and enjoy your lovely little girls
Lol I only recently learned from my American friends about push presents, I can't think of anything more deserving a present. Enjoy your palette and baby ❤️❤️❤️
I wonder, have you ever tried grumbacher Finest watercolors? You can get a 14ml tube for $8-12 from cheap joes. They are just as good as Daniel smith and sennelier. Dr. Oto did a video a year ago where a subscriber sent her 4 tubes...and owings art did one like 5 years ago when wet paint gifted him some tubes. Both of them really enjoyed the paints...then there's 0 other videos on youtube regarding these paints lol so odd
Oh no, sorry to hear that. Maybe I can send you a palette with some half pans in it for you to try? Do you have a p.o. box or somewhere I can send you some?
Thank you so much but I have so much paint and I'm so particular about it that it's just money wasted. I also wouldn't want to fall in love with something I can't get here. Thanks anyway for the kind offer!
@@iritlandgraf no problem and I completely understand lol I have been collecting paints for almost 2 years now and a little over a week ago I put everything out and listed it all for sale, had like 30 people come and buy stuff. Now I'm only using grumbacher finest that's how much I love them I gave everything up for them...so definitely don't try them if you're anything like me LOL
That is great, that you sold them to people who would enjoy them! Next time I'm in the US I will definitely go to an art store and pick up some local brands, I just need to see it and pick colors I know I will use!
Hello Irit, I was looking into vegan art supplies and also bought Van Gogh in seperate pans but I wonder if their brush which comes with some of their boxes is vegan, I believe it is not. Can you confirm? Thanks for the lovely video!
So... can we get a convo going abt that sketchbook? Has anyone been able to compare it to the Etchr “Perfect” watercolor sketchbook? (And am I misremembering, but doesnt Etchr use Fabriano paper?) the cost to get the vergatone to the US is slightly more than the Etchr.... but the Vergatone is undeniably a beautiful/high functioning book.... insights✨very✨welcome....
Hi! Both are really nice, just in different ways. The Etchr is lovely 100% cotton and heavy enough to take a lot of action, for me the best 'proper' watercolour sketchbook. The Vergatone paper feels quite unique and like fabric to me and can handle way more water than I expected for such thin paper?! I use the Etchr for 'proper' watercolour painting and study but love the other for experimenting, swatching, expressive messing about etc. It's nice to have an alternative for a change of paper feel and to have somewhere to 'relax'. Sorry that probably doesn't help you choose as I like and use both, basically Etchr is really the Perfect Sketchbook for watercolour but the Vergatone is unique and very charming!
@@ailsatg I actually find your response quite helpful!!! I am only now getting a feel for what I want to get out of my sketchbooks. I gave one of my Etchr set to a friend, so I’m having to make a decision sooner rether than later. I am realising that “learning” how your paper works is the key to enjoying it. I have a seriouslycheap
No joke!! Once wet it does take water better than pencil 😂 I haven't tried the Etchr sketchbook but if it contains 100% cotton 300gsm paper I imagine it is wonderful, but might feel too precious if you just love playing around in your sketchbook...
I love the Etchr, just getting into my first one and it is amazing quality. My only gripe is they only have landscape (at the moment). I like portrait for most of my work as I do a lot of portraits. Etchr is also cheaper for those of us in the US so that is a plus. But Irit is right, you tend to make it too “precious”! I just ordered two of the Vergatone in A5 so I can’t wait to try them out too and compare. And, I ordered a Mossery from Malaysia in 100% cotton. It is a sketchbook system with a cover and books you can replace which was appealing. I bought the sketchbook and two refills as the shipping is free if you order a certain dollar amount. I’ve been following them on IG and they look like excellent quality.k. Always looking for the holy grail of sketchbooks! 😂
I tried the Rembrandt paints and they are lovely. The Dusk range is so beautiful Dusk Pink is now a must have. Thank you
Wonderful!
Good to know ! I need more paint so off to Ocar Deserres, Pointe Claire !
Perment Rose I need you !
That sounds like a great palette!
I LOVE that you talk about the Rembrandts and Van Gogh paints being vegan!!!
Thanks Lisa!
Me, too, I did not know that yet! I use those brands anyway, but knowing this about them adds to my appreciation.
Thanks for sharing! Glad you like these too!
Thanks for all the info and recommendations!
I think it's for fashion. if someone famous in the world comments on a specific brand, everyone follows the trend. I myself wondered why no one talked about the new colors that were released and so many others that have been replaced and improved.
Thanks for the shout out! And I totally agree we do need something to lift the spirits this year around the holiday season... 😁👌🏼
Forgot to say, great video as always! 👍🏼
Thank you Alyona!!
I understand your love of Fabriano of less than 100% cotton. I haven’t tried the sketchbook, but am a huge fan of their Studio 50% paper, especially for Plein air in our humid climate. Now I’m going out to try some of your suggestions.
Good to know Charyl! I will definitely check it out!
I've been eyeing those sketchbooks since you first showed yours! I've still got others to finish lol, but can't wait to try one!
Hope you get to try it soon and love it as much as me😀
Hi, Irit. Great video! It has helped much with the choice of pencils for which I am a beginner. For watercolor, I Iike using Van Gogh and Rembrandt to complement my Sennelier & Isaro palette.
. I especially like their dusk colours.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Judith, so kind!
Escoda brushes were a spontaneous gift to myself a while back, i felt a little bit guilty about such an impulsive purchase but after using them for so long I can say it was the best investment I made for my painting! A good set of brushes can work wonders for your art!
Glad you're enjoying them too!
I'm glad you enjoy them!
Van Gogh are my top recommendation for classes of beginners along with Sonnet, Ladoga and Rosa. All of them perform well and can be purchased online. Fabriano is my favorite paper by far.
Thanks for sharing! I agree with your picks, such great options for beginners, no compromise on quality, excellent value for money!
Thanks for sharing!!
Lovely video. I have bought a couple of those items on your recommendations in the last few months. Notably, the Van Gogh paints, graphitint pencils and a few museum aquarelles. I'd love one of those sketchbooks to try as well, maybe down the track a bit. Thanks again!
Glad you like them!
It was wonderful to see you in front of the camera. Thank you for adding more products to my next art haul.
Thank you Lori ❤️❤️ glad you enjoyed 😀
I love the products from the Royal Talens company, especially the Van Gogh paints! Luckily they are very easy to find here in Brasil!
I haven’t used the Rembrandt watercolors yet but seeing your video just made me wanna try them! This cobalt violet looks incredible 💜
I'm glad they are available in Brazil! Hope you can get what you want ❤️❤️
Thank you ❤️❤️ yes I remember watching Danielle Donaldson using Grumbacher palettes and I almost bought one, they looked lovely 😀
Yes, I have used Grumbacher products since 1973 when they were very popular. I love their products.
That’s what i remember from the seventies- Grumbacher everything. When did that stop?
What a great idea for a vid! I totally agree about Derwent drawing and graphitint, beautiful colours and soft easy to use. I have to give a shout out to Royal Talens Van Gogh mixed media paper (it can handle anything!) and Platignum Studio fountain pens (for me, perfectly weighted and inexpensive). Thanks for sharing 👍
Glad it was helpful!
I totally agree Irid, specially because I bought a lot of this stuff after watching your demo's 😁💕
Haha thanks Rina!
Thanks Nancy! Glad you enjoyed and thank you for sharing your faves with us!
For me: Da Vinci Paint Co.
❤ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜
I've heard great things about it, hopefully it will be available in Europe at some point!
Thanks Gail! I use titanium white. I would love to try Da vinci! I hope they will be available in Europe at some point!
Loved this but I just gotta say.... OMG!!!! That last pencil lead you sharpened! I'm in love. I've been looking for a sharpener that can do that. It would be so much nicer than me exacto blade hahaha. Thank you for this info.
You are so welcome!
Rembrandt has one of the nicest pocket box type sets I've ever seen. Not only the case, which is gorgeous and very solid built, but the color selections and quality of pigments. Even the brush is gorgeous. I've been tempted by it many times even though the last thing I need is another set of watercolors.
Couldn't agree more!
Haha I totally get it!
Thank you so much Gail for the kinds words! Makes me happy! I hope you get your journals fast and that you love them as much as I do!
thanks for mentioning some of my own favorites. So good to hear their names online.
My pleasure!
I have the van gough irridecent and interference pallette the black one, they are really stunning!!!
Glad you're enjoying them Sue!
Thank you for keeping it real ❤️
I agree with all your choices specially with Rembrandt watercolor they are superb in my opinion .
Thank you Delia! Glad you enjoyed!
I am fan of Rembrandt soft pastel since child and after trying out the watercolor (both van gogh and Rembrandt) I also love it.
Thank you Irit. I have 3 of these palettes. They are super!
Can you please link to the other Artist you mentioned. Many thanks 🇨🇦
Hi Kristina! Glad you enjoyed! Do you mean Alyona Creates? She's on TH-cam 😀
Oh I have that same palette. I actually removed the center piece and keep my brushes, pencil, pens and squirt bottle there :)
Yeah that's a great use of it as well 😀
I really like the da Vinci Casaneo series of faux squirrel brushes.
I agree, they are beautiful!
Thank you! Good to know! Linsday tries everything, I always appreciate her reviews!
Another great video! I got a kick out of seeing the Dahle 133 sharpener. It’s my favorite and I have a backup just in case.
Glad you enjoyed ❤️
I love the Derwin’s watercolor pencils. Why is it no one includes a sharpener with their set?
I love Rembrandt paints. I got a trial tube in an Art Snacks and was obsessed! No one talks about them but they def deserve the attention.
I totally agree!
@@iritlandgraf the colors are vibrant, the paint consistent, the amount and price is on point.
They have even gotten some sparkle colors. Just love them.
17:31 oh I love your pinkish colors in half pans💜 Can I ask their pigment names and brands please?
Thanks, from right to left (bottom to top ?) the first two purply pinks are limited edition handmade watercolors that are no longer availabe sadly. Then Holbein brilliant pink, Shinhan Pass Bright Red, two more old limited edition handmade paints and Shinhan Pass shell pink is the last :)
@@iritlandgraf thank you so much:) ❤️
I had said before these were expensive in the states. Well as it turns out it's more expensive on Jackson's because they only have pans and 10ml tubes and the 10ml tubes are $2-3 more than they are here. I can buy them at a good price here though, which I never checked and I can get 20ml tubes here. So I just ordered 4 to try out:)
Hope you enjoy them Jaime!
@@iritlandgraf thank you ❤
I just found your video and I found it super interesting!
Haha thank you Susan! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and even more happy that you like my recommendations 😀😀
Thank you Irit! You’re such a kind young woman.💕
The white is a great dark line to show under water color for spontaneous pics.)
PS love the pink on you! Great color & so perfect for you with red hair painting lovely bright things!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really love the Hahnemühle Turner and Cézanne papers 😀
My favorite watercolours, are a mix of Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Some colours are better on the Van gogh line, some on the rembrandt.
Thanks for the info and I totally agree about traveling with the sharpener. I left it at home on my last trip and really missed it!
Also I have the full set of the Museum pencils, but I keep put off using them a lot since they’re so pricy.
That is awesome! Glad you got such great deals, enjoy all the goodies!
Loved this video- just bought the watercolor pencils and Notebook
Hope you enjoy it!
You need to get a commission for all the art supplies you recommend. Thanks for posting, I just adore your videos
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying! I do get a small commission if you use my links to Amazon.com or Jackson's, but not every shop offers affiliate links :)
I am in love with my Derwent Drawing!
Me too!
I use the derwent pastel pencils . They are great to use
Glad you like them!
i tend to buy smaller tubes of paint because i'm not yet sure if i'll like the specific version of colour just yet. but a while ago i bought my first 15ml tube of watercolour (the largest i have) of holbein's marine blue PB16 (phthalo turquoise) because it was the first colour that i felt like i couldn't live without. and nowwwww... partly because of you Irit, hehe, i recently purchased a 20ml tube of Rembrandt's cobalt violet, YAY!!!! :D i'm so happy the tube i got was not a dud. the formulation and the hue, and the consistency, and the granulationnnnn~ it's all so perfect! thank you for being so passionate about it because i am definitely overjoyed with my purchase :D
Haha yup yup, I am the cobalt violet obsessed fan ;) So glad you like yours!!
Irit what is the name of the Rembrandt color under the cobalt violet that is very dark. I love that color. Thanks really liked this video.
Dusk Pink 😍😀
Great video! Thank you for sharing your favorites, it really helps us all to decide what to spend our money on, since I, for one, want to buy it all!
I would say Turner Watercolor paints, Creative Mark Mimik watercolor brushes, and the Paul Rubens empty watercolor palette. These are my go too on a daily basis unless following a tutorial using a different WC brand. I buy most supplies at Jerry's Artarama online.
Thank for sharing Renee! Which empty palette do you mean? I'd love to know 😀
@@iritlandgraf Hi ! Here is the link to this palette. I love it because the wells are so long you can easily mix and dilute paints.
I've bought several to use for different brands of paints.

Oh yeah I remember seeing The frugal crafter reviewing the palette, she also really liked it. Glad you found a good one!
@@iritlandgraf I love Lindsay!
I have and I am loving all these products. I also love my Winsor & Newton Inks. I have the Henry Set and have added a few colors plus gold. I can use my dip pens, brushes and even cotton buds. They just go with everything else that I have and use.
Thanks for sharing!!
@@iritlandgraf well you are a great enabler. lol Quite a few of these products I learned about from you. :)
I'm glad you're enjoying and I try to enable only when I think it's really worth it 😀
So happy to see someone talking about the rembrandt tubes...ive been wondering if i should get a few tubes as an upgrade and cannot find any reviews online!
You should!
Thank you! I love this video and appreciate your opinions on the products!
Thanks Tracy! Glad to hear 😀
Regarding the Fabriano Vergatone--what is the 70% virgin fiber? What plant does it come from? Is it wood pulp or something else? Does anyone know?
Excellent question. It's hard to find info about this.
@@iritlandgraf Interesting. Well, I'm curious to try it after your description, that's for sure!
That is such a pity. I hope they will become easier to get!
Thank you Irit for the review! I am the marketing manger for the UK...nice to hear about our Rembrandt watercolours :-)
My pleasure! I wish more people knew about your wondeful paints :)
I love my Sennelier paints!
Sennelier is another story, since i've loved the palette a lot and it's not as full 😥
Thank you for your answers, it's always a pleasure to watch the videos you make! 😊
Thank you, glad you enjoy them ❤️❤️
That palette is perfect! I love it so much that I just bought another one too. You're such an enabler. 😅😅
So glad to hear!
Now I need to go to Rome to get that sweater ;-))))) Awesome video Irit. I think I've gotten most of those supplies thanks to your recommendations :D
Haha we have to go to Rome then 😀
Ya I went and got one of those sketchbook after you showed yours. They were sold out accept for the orange so I got that one. I wanted white but the orange turned out to be nice too! I live in the US but they were on sale and US got an additional percentage off so I ended up not paying extra for shipping. Haven’t used it yet but I really like the looks of it.
I hope you like it as much as I do!
Where did you end up finding it, Susan?
Yeah I think that Mijello palette is good, but I need flexibility as I have a large collection of colors I like to switch around 🤷♀️
It's the Vergatone sketchbook Susan, comes in 3 sizes and 4 different colors of cover.
Good to know! Thanks!
I'm so glad to hear you love them 😀
I'd like to throw my all time favourite wood-pulp paper in here:
Clairefontaine Etival 300gsm in cold pressed or rough
I use it all the time, I love the texture and it works perfectly for my use.
Then I think you would really enjoy it Susan!
I use the royal talens sketchbooks and their Van Gogh watercolour paper and paints
Haven't tried their sketchbooks, interesting!
Gelatos gel crayons, spray inks and India ink are the art supplies I hardly her about as any more.oh and watercolor brush pens(like arteza real brush pens).
I love Van Gogh paints😁
I will certainly check out the paper from Cult Pens. I love their shop for fountain pens.
Yeah they have a great selection!
The van gogh Indigo is a treasured part of my palette...
I have two old time manual sharpeners that make lovely points. They are older like 1960 or 70s.
Very cool!
So glad you enjoyed Valérie ❤️❤️❤️ have a lovely weekend!
Omg!! Such a dangerous video for me to watch! I'm going to go shopping 🛍 WOOHOO! Thank you!
Haha enjoy!
Wonderful video, I enjoyed hearing your opinions about all these supplies. I've been thinking of getting a desk sharpener, and wondering what is the difference between these two - do you use certain types of pencils in each one? Does the Afmat create a longer point than the Dahle? Thanks for sharing!
I use all my pencils in both, the Afmat is the really long tips :) Probably Dahle is suitable for most people ;)
I want to try the Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle pencils, but yeah not cheap. maybe for my 40th unless I just end up with a new graphics card, wouldn't turn down either lol 😛
I recommend looking at the swatches on Jackson's, you can see some colors pack more punch and then others are probably comparable to other brands.
@@iritlandgraf ahh, I consider brightness an overall quality and intensity when a color really pops. Everyone has different perception though.😄
I haven't, I'm in Europe and they are not available here sadly.
Next time I'm in the US I will definitely go to an art store and pick up some local brands, I just need to see it and pick colors I know I will use!
i love my v goghs and i use daniel smith for the special colours
You always have the greatest "finds" Irit! Thank-you
Oh oh wait for my next video and maybe hide your credit card from yourself 😀😂
@@iritlandgraf lol
Hello Irit, I was looking into vegan art supplies and also bought Van Gogh in seperate pans but I wonder if their brush which comes with some of their boxes is vegan, I believe it is not. Can you confirm? Thanks for the lovely video!
As far as I know the brushes in the Van Gogh sets are synthetic. I have seen Rembrandt include real hair brushes in their sets.
@@iritlandgraf ah okay thanks a lot! I had the impression the one in the Rembrandt set is not vegan, unfortunately.
Yes I think you're right about Rembrandt.
What sizes do you recommend in the Escoda travel brush?
It really depends on how you paint and the size of your sketchbook or paper. For me #10 is standard and then a #2 or #4 for details.
MY BRANDS: Maimeriblu watercolors/Gouache, Sennelier Gouache/Egg Tempera/Inks, Turner Japanesque Acryl Gouache.
FABRIANO Venizia Book Sketchbook.
Great picks! I want to try the Venezia sketchbook soon!
@@iritlandgraf It's great. The paper is thicker/Smooth & slightly textured, 200 gsm. Got the 6 by 9 & the bigger one.
Thanks for the info!
This is soooooo informative thank you so much for sharing
Glad you enjoyed Deborah!
For me its the white nights watercolors, they are awesome and don’t get a lot of attention
So... can we get a convo going abt that sketchbook?
Sketchbook that takes water.... almost better than it takes pencil!!! 🤣. Anyway, thx for uour feedback Alisa.
No joke!! Once wet it does take water better than pencil 😂
I haven't tried the Etchr sketchbook but if it contains 100% cotton 300gsm paper I imagine it is wonderful, but might feel too precious if you just love playing around in your sketchbook...
