  • Astronaut Scott Carpenter was interviewed for an oral history as part of NASA's Johnson Space Center History Collection.

    Carpenter was one of the Mercury Seven -- America's first men in space. This interview was conducted in 1999 by Roy Neal -- longtime NBC News reporter and correspondent who covered the American manned space program.

    Malcolm Scott Carpenter was the first
    American astronaut to be given solid food for eating.
    He named his space capsule
    Aurora
    Seven, the seven represents the first seven
    American astronauts.

    He was my dad godfather, my grandad and Scott were best friends he would spend the night at our house with his wife Patti 2 to 3 tines a year
