    I have the Tamron 28-200 2.8/5.6. It's a hidden gem lens for traveling.

    Back in the day, I had a Sigma 28-300 that lived on my film camera whilst travelling, for which it was perfect. Thanks for showing us more of Helsinki!

    A 28..300 from Sigma is my favorite lens, especially for traveling. To me, it also makes sense on APSC. It is almost always in the bag, when I take a "big" camera.
    Mine is slightly faster, but the constraint short shutterspeed, high fstop in combination with polarizing filter or less light can be tough. Digital was a great relief for me, because I can work with autoiso. Films with 200 or 400 ISO were usually fine, but not always enough. I still need to find a decent setup when autoiso would like to go below 100, but can't... I guess ISO 100 and Av or Tv will be the way..

    Thanks for the review! The 28-300 piqued my interest!
    Even though I'm very much a 35mm guy at heart, Tamron's 28-200/2.8-5.6 has seen constant use from me, on paid gigs and in everyday life. It's so convenient! And surprisignly sharp too.
    One of its best aspect is the aperture, which stays quite wide through large part of the range, roughly:
    * 28-33mm f/2.8
    * 33-45mm f/3.2
    * 45-55mm f/3.5
    * 55-80mm f/4.0
    * 80-115mm f/4.5
    * 115-145mm f/5.0
    * 145-200mm f/5.6
    I like to think of it as a 28-105/2.8-4.5 lens, with some extra range up to 200mm when needed! Changes your perspective on the lens a bit, eh. 😛
    If you still have the lens, I wonder how's the aperture spacing in the 28-300mm?

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The aperture steps go approximately like this: 28-32mm F4, 32-44mm F4.5, 44-54mm F5, 54-78mm F5.6, 78-170mm F6.3, 170-300mm F7.1.

      @@mattisulanto Thanks for the tedious little test! Seems like both lenses get gradually slower in similar pace. The 28-300mm is mainly one stop slower until 115mm, drom onwards the difference varies between 0.7 and 0.3 stops until 200mm.
      The 28-300 benefits from optical stabilization in handheld low light and in video, whereas 28-200 has better capabilities in stopping movement, bokeh and close-up magnification. It's good to have choices!

  • @j_taylor
    @j_taylor 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Those images look quite decent. You make the vignetting serve the image too.
    I carry an 18-200mm (same range on my 1.5 crop camera) as a second lens when I go for a walk. It's never the best lens for a particular shot, but it's often the best lens I'm carrying. At minimum focal distance, it can even work as a macro.
    Thanks for taking us along on your ferry trip. That looks like fun and also gives me ideas for a photo walk.

    As a landscape photographer I find this lens very interesting. I already have the 28-200 tho. I'm very happy with that lens, and 200mm is already far into the telephoto territory. But having the extra 100mm would be so nice for picking out details in the landscape. On the other hand the speed of the 28-200 could be super useful at times too. Speed vs more reach hmm 🤔 Anyways, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this lens, Matti. And also for showing a little of Helsinki. I've actually been to Suomenlinna (or Sveaborg, as we call it over here) once, very interesting place with a lot of history 👍🏻 And Helsinki is such a great city! Almost as nice as Åbo 😉 Haha

    I like the idea of a superzoom, but ultimately there are just too many compromises for me. Instead, I'd prefer to travel with a second camera body with telephoto zoom attached. That way there is not fussing to change lenses. I tried out that strategy on a recent vacation and it worked much better for me.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for sharing. Your approach is one way to do travel photography and you'll have a spare camera body as well. However, some more bulk too.

      I prefer travel with less expensive and heavy ahh gears on me lol. If u have more than 30mp like this A7IV to crop for memories n social media 1080p, why do you care about max pixel? Unless it's a photography trip, then there's no good reason to lug around expensive gears to be damaged n stolen abroad

      That’s my choice too. Generally speaking though. Last year we walked 12-15 km per day on a week long trip and two bodies were too much. It all depends on the trip but my preferred choice is two bodies.

    5:55 I'm uncertain whether the image stabilization (IBIS) on the Sony A7 IV is outstanding, or if the Tamron Vibration Compensation (VC) is superior. Observing the shakiness of your hand while holding the camera with just one hand, I must say that the photos taken appear reasonably sharp!

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sometimes when you hold a video camera in one hand and a still camera in the other hand the shake can be a bit accentuated😀 I took the photo properly with two hands😀

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! The tonality of photos is a personal preference and these photos look just the way I want them to look. You might have taken different photos and used different settings and that's fine. It's also possible that your monitor is not calibrated and that's why the photos look too dark. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

    Not bad for what it is.
    But for a travel zoom, I'd prefer 24-200mm with a much smaller form factor. A successor to the Sony RX100 VII for example. A small version with the existing body and lens, which fits into the pocket of a jeans. And a RX100 VIII PRO, with a bigger lens that's one stop faster and the fixed viewfinder of the A7C II.

      The F stop on a lens is calculated by dividing the system's focal length by the diameter of the opening. So there is no way to get a small and lightweight any of the above unless it's for a sensor the size of a mobile phone and/or some new materials that are better and lighter than glass and the plastics/metals used for the housing.

    • @amermeleitor
      @amermeleitor 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jeroenvdw about that there are two ways: 1) simulation by AI and other software tools, with near perfect accuracy, simulation of crop, compression, distortion by focal length, etc and 2) there are some patents about very thin pieces of glass that redirect the light because nano printing surface. Not curved glass, just straight glass and the function of curved glass is achieved by very small marks printed on the glass surface, marks that are not visible at naked eye, each one near a 2-4 nanometers. It's a patent by Canon. It could allow to make a 300mm lens in less that half the size.

      I didn't notice distortion here, but my 18-200 superzoom has some complex and at the wide end, slightly goofy distortion. Definitely a tradeoff, but worth it to me. Also, one can work around flaws. I think the vignetting in these photos enhances the mood rather than distracts.
