This movie is so underrated. It's lovely, and Sam, Johnny Depp's character, is amazing. I wish I could meet someone like him irl. And HIS CLOTHES! :D And his hat! Sooo cute. ^w^ Can't get enough of him!
Wow. What I've always considered the best and most magical scene of the movie. It's great because it does two things at once: it provides Johnny Depp with a wonderful uninterrupted showcase of his physical comedy skills (while simultaneously paying tribute to Chaplin, Lloyd, and Keaton), and it also gently advances the film's plot, as the moment he breaks through to Aidan Quinn. And it wouldn't be truly magical without the lush music score of Rachel Portman. Thank you for this post.
I have been a professional clown for fourteen years. I have toured with Ringling Bros. I got to meet Weird Al Yankovic several times. And it's all because when I was nineteen and just out of high school I saw this scene and thought, "That's what I want to do with my life!"
OMG I live in spokane!!! I never new this town was so special wen i moved here but after seeing this movie OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! YAY SPOKANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Summer of 1992 in Spokane. The inside of the hospital scenes were made in an old warehouse near Hamilton and Trent, where I had to deliver 5-gal. bottles of water to every weekday. When this was shot, they cordoned off Riverfront Park massive that day.
My sister's boyfriend knows how to do the hat trick! But he lives in New Zealand so he can't teach it to me. But he said if he was ever able to meet with us (not very likely) he would teach it to me if I taught him something on the piano. Benny & Joon ROCKS!!!!!!!
@kashmir053 I know, right? I live there....in Spokane, WA. I mean I live here, in Spokane, where Benny And Joon was filmed. You know what? Its now April 20th, 2011, and so far this year, in Spokane, the temperature has not risen above 59 degrees farenheit. Crazy right? Its nearly May and the hottest daytime high so far has been 59. And that was in March! Cliff Stern hooked up Johnny Depp's cable tv in 92 when filming was goin on. Mark Nelson eventually fired him though.
@fingersplustoes no that's just the personality of the character he plays. it's really cute. actually i think, when he he was younger, i can see him doing this just for fun in a park, because he's Johnny Depp.
I beleive he kicks it around the first few times, but for the pupouses of the movie, a string was probably used. But I'm sure there are people capible of performing the trick.
haha for those who went to North Central High School, if you pause it at 2:36 and look to the right of the video, thats Herm Marshall, former P.E. teacher. lol
Yeah, I saw it. It's a true story that was made up! :op I got to meet Patch Adams back in '99 when he gave a lecture at ODU. VERY tall guy, at least 6'5", hair down to his waist which was orange and blue, and a big ole handlebar mustache. He didn't like the movie, but it got his message out there, plus he got the royalties for his hospital.

He watched a lot of Buster Keaton.
Hilarious...! Johnny Depp can do any character and play it like a fucking beast!!
with the hat
he flicks it upwards off people's heads
he kicks it to make it slide along the ground
how does he make it move when he is further away?

Johnny Depp... is the best!
how does he do the hat trick where he flips it off his and her head?
he is so cute.
its filmed backwards everybody moves backwards. he has a string on his shoe and the hat and so when he walks back the hat goes with him.
