Excellent mods! I would suggest getting a brush to remove the spoil, rather than using your hand, as the shaving has the potential to get caught in the chuck, and it would cut you to the bone, taking most of the flesh from your fingers, within a millisecond. Or, use compressed air to blow it out of the way. Safety first!
After seeing so many really bad pieces produced by this very sketchy machine, it's good to see that, like the ubiquitous CNC engravers, you really CAN make real things (though very slowly) with it.
Hello. Very nice job !! Congratulations. How do you compensate the backalsh of screws (which is to my knowledge quite important on those machines (almost 0.2mm). Thanks !
Amazing results! I have the barebones lathe you're modifying in the video and would like to know which other cutting 'blades' you're using? Were they hand made/ ground to shape yourself, or is there somewhere we can purchase them. Mine only came with the one (square-ended piece of hardened stock).
Unfortunately, I made it without drawings, so there is no data. Recently, I'm thinking of making a 5-axis CNC on epoxy granite. But it is very hard job. so Before that, I'm thinking of making the frame of this lathe out of epoxy granite and releasing the data as a test. What do you think?
I haven't been using beaglebone lately, but I may publish a video on another site soon. awesome-solution-workshop.teachable.com/p/how-to-modify-a-general-purpose-lathe-to-become-a-cnc-lathe
LinuxCNC (formerly Enhanced Machine Controller or EMC2) is a free, open-source Linux software system that implements numerical control capability using general purpose computers to control CNC machines. Designed by various volunteer developers at linuxcnc.org, it is typically bundled as an ISO file with a modified version of 32-bit Ubuntu Linux which provides the required real-time kernel.

To use a stepper motor for thread cutting is a great idea. It gives big torque at low rpm. Also it does not require a spindle position sensor then. You should try if it is pissible in your software to advance the thread cutting tool not straight, but under 29 degree. Then it makes chips just on the front cutting edge. This reduces cutting force and torque.

I think 3018 is not strong enough. The reason I chose the 3010 should be that the stroke of each axis is short and the frame is small so it's strong. The longer the linear shaft, the lower the strength.

Does the belts on the steppers flex much when steel is machined? I guess I'm wondering about the mechanical tolerances of the CNC.
This lathe has the ability to lathe steel, but the machine is not strong enough for stable processing.
