calendly.com/t... Can catholics honestly practice martial arts? Well, it really depends on the art you choose. In my experience, the more traditional you go the more likely you are going to run into some eastern religious practices. However, Muay Thai definitely has some demonic practices going on. In this video I break down how to pick a good school that doesn't dabble in that sort of thing.

I wonder what your thoughts are regarding the Japanese way of tea/tea ceremony? I came across your channel via your videos on Bl. Takayama, who was himself an acclaimed tea master, a famous disciple of Sen no Rikyu. There are still a few surviving stories about his practice of the way of tea, from both Japanese and missionary sources. IRCC a Jesuit missionary recorded that Takayama said that the practice of tea helps in his prayer life and that he would retreat into his tea room for prayer. There still exists a tea scoop that he personally made by hand.
I myself have a fascination and much enthusiasm for the way of tea and incorporate it into my prayer life to stay consistent, so it was exciting for me to find that a blessed/saint had been highly accomplished in it and recommended it highly and at least implicitly claimed that it is compatible with the faith. However, there are some things in it that raises my eyebrows. For example, bowing to objects such as calligraphy pieces. It is undeniable that the way of tea has very intimate ties to Buddhist spiritual practice, and is usually seen in this way. I just wonder if these ties are as inseparable as they sometimes seem.
Before my conversion I was convert to Buddhism from no religion at all, and my view toward Buddhist things as a Catholic now is that if there are some good stuff or some truth in it, then we shouldn't worry about taking it, just like how Aquinas took up Aristotle and his Islamic commentators. Philosophically there are some things in Buddhist thought that are very commonsensical and compatible with Catholicism, such as the claim that the senses can only grasp particulars whereas the intellect can grasp both particulars and universals, and the claim that nothing can arise from nothing (these don't have anything to do with the way of tea but I'm just giving examples). While I was never a big fan of Zen even back in my Buddhist days I was and still am quite fond of the aesthetics inspired by them.
Anyways, I just wanted to know from someone who is a big fan of Bl. Takayama what he thinks about the way of tea, which Takayama himself would have most likely considered an important part of his life. Hope you have a great day!

That’s a good question ! In fact I’ll be uploading a video on this channel of a talk I was recently at with an expert from Japan in the tea ceremony and it’s origins :) to answe your question , the bowing is simply a sign of respect. Just like bowing in martial arts doesn’t mean we are showing adoration but respect. Just like when we pray over food it’s because the fact it’s a gift from God. But thank you for comment! I think you’ll look forward to the tea ceremony explaining when it’s out :)

    The answer is Yes.
Example. Filipino martial arts . Dan Inosanto is the most famous of that style. He is Catholic. He worked with the late Bruce Lee.

My uncle tried to teach me tai chi and even gave me some books to read about tai chi. The cosmology is definitely not Catholic.

Tai chi is not only very new-agey, it also claims to be a practical form of self defense (with combat tai chi) nothing could be further from the truth lol
