It's a Weinachten oratorium .So very ad hoc for these days.Crista was a Mezzo with a dramatic clear cut that sung Mozart,Bach Beethoven,Strauss and Wagner.Specialized in Masses ,Passions and these Oratoriums by Bach. But Crista was much more.Always with a dramatic touch she was Princess Éboli in Don Carlo,Ulrica in Un Ballo or even Amneris in Aida. What I would have loved is to hear her as Adalgisa in1960 with Maya in Norma.I wonder if I would have loved her more than Simionato or Verret.Merry Christmas MANOLI.
I can't recall ever hearing a bad performance of this number, and that is highly unusual, particularly for a Bach aria. The subtly scolding tone of the text, which appears to be addressed to shallow or lukewarm Christians, is at odds with Bach's profoundly consolatory setting. Ludwig is the perfect artiste to bring this paradoxically severe and yet soothing item to life. Thank you, Manoli!
The voice I would want to be have been born with, not Maria, not dame Joan or Montsy, not dame Elisabeth or Birgit.... Christa Ludwig all the way... and Bach is simply the greatest composer who ever lived
