My great- great- great grandfather and his son, my great-great grandfather, were original members of the 6th NY Heavy Artillery which came to Harper's Ferry in the early fall of 1862 to and were involved in the building and manning of these Maryland forts. In the summer of '63 they were taken into the Army of the Potomac to make up for the losses at Gettysburg and served with the Sixth Corps until the end. I'll be in the area next week and will take a walk up to this fort. Nice video. Thanks

I love England's history also, we are ur brothers here in America, and as an American in west Virginia, I consider the u.k.s history mine also, because before we were Americans, we were English and my grandfather faught in ww2 in the battle of the bulge
If you're ever near uniontown there's an old fort called fort necessity. Of of rt40 on the mountain. General Braddock was killed there and is buried near by as well.
My 3rd Great-Grandfather, Sgt Major John Champe, farmed just 33 miles south of here after serving in the Revolution. My two brothers and I visited this area last year (2019) passing through Harper's Ferry on our way to Gettysburg. There are so many forgotten sites like Fort Duncan that played a roll in our history, I appreciate your efforts in preserving their memory. Thank You
Thanks Kindly WW! It is hard to imagine the hard labor that went into hand digging out that earth for a fort. The average soldier was about 140lbs, 5'8" tall, carried and 60lbs pack and a musket 10-12lbs. Marches could be 20-30 miles a day and then dig in boys! And we think we have it rough with a battery powered hedge trimmers, eh? Lovely Country down there in that Harper's Ferry region! I must get down there again, it's been too long! I just heard about Huckleberry Hill/Ft Duncan recently. All Trails has some community shared trails there. Thanks for the video. I think I will have my All Trails ap open so I don't wander off trail.
I was up there earlier in February and thought it was kind of nice to have a place you need to hunt a bit to find, and that are not tidied up and organized like so many other sites. It kind of made me feel closer to the history.

Their is a trail to the fort. The first house you went by that is fixed up you walk straight past it in between the house and the out building. The trail is behind the out building. When you get to the top of hill the fort is to your right.

Ww, I enjoy this video and am a history lover, I live in southern west virginia on the new river in summers county, the history here goes way back, all the way to the days of the British, and when they owned this land, there was a fort here called fort culburtson on the new river, during the time of Lord dunmores war, during the 1750s, there are signs about it, but I don't think anyone has ever found any reminisce of it or the exact location, it is all wilderness still to this day , where it is supposed to be, and it is on public land in a wild life refuge area, on the new river, the land and river is still wilderness today, as it was then during the 1750s , and there are still artifacts to be found from an old mansion, that was built by slaves, in like 1828, which u can Google, called crumps mansion, which was owned and built by Colonel William crump of the Confederate army, a native of Franklin county VA ... You really need to come here , u will truly love summers county, it is a hot spot for history, and is all woods here.... I love the woods and know the land well and would love to have your help, in finding this old fort occupied by the British, history papers say that , the Shawnee, would come down out of the mountains and kill a few British troops, and then flee, the British were terrified to stay at this fort.. please get back with me...
I'm rather curious to know if the fort was only surrounded by that earthen wall, or was it also fortified by a wooden fence on top of the wall? (Like what you'd see in the movies.)The other fort at least had stone fortifications. Kinda makes me wonder......
I know the smaller trees would not have been here in the war time. I wonder how old the big trees might be and if any existed at that time. When battle or any historic area is not maintained we have to rely on imagination, probably not as accurate as authentic maintenance would be.
There is a book called "Last year of the American Civil War" written by Jubal Early. He wrote in in 1866 just after the war ended and is apparently quite good judging by the reviews. I think I will get it.
Because its ANOTHER!! Federal Protected area that they let get overgrown and dont care about, but dont get caught digging ,but it will be ok to build some homes or condos or shopping center should the right amount of money come along

Is that what "earthworks" means? A fence made of earth? Why is it called "breastworks?"
