Restoring a Vintage Tama FibreStar

  • I had the opportunity to snag up this vintage set of Tama fibrestars for a pretty fair price, so I couldn't pass it up. It was in great shape for its age but the wrap was falling apart. The previous owner was going to rewrap the kit with carbon fiber contact paper, but never got around to it. I wanted to liven it up some so what better color than yellow!
Everything I used in the video, plus more!

I'm the previous owner of this kit. David did this kit total justice!!!
The carbon fiber wrap was my attempt to do SOMETHING to this kit as the wrap was in rough shape. I gave up on it and glad David was able to give this kit its proper due.

It can however, I was toying with the idea of rewrapping this kit and tried the carbon fiber as an experiment. Not a huge fan then I had some other things come up that I put the rewrap idea aside.
It all worked out as David did justice to this kit....more than I could have!

I repair quite a few vintage shells, and the one thing I would offer is how I cut the holes through the wrap. I use a small cordless drill and a block of wood. I determine the correct drill bit size for the hole. Hold a block tightly against the wrap side and drill through the hole into the block. Takes less than five minutes to get all the holes done and they're cut clean and exact.

Fiberglass drums tend to go one of two ways. Drummers either love them or hate them. I own two Pearl fiberglass series. One has standard toms. The other has concert toms.
I've seen very expensive fiberglass drums and I've seen them go very cheap. It just depends on the buyer.

To speed up the time it took to cut out the holes:
I use an awl from inside the shell and as you're poking the holes hold a
small block of wood on the opposite side of the holes so the awl doesn't
just poke all the way through the holes lifting up your wrap. Then use
an cordless drill with a step bit going inside the holes from outside of
the shell. Perfect holes and if you wanted even cleaner use exacto
knife afterwards to clean the holes up but it's not needed since the
lugs hides any of that anyways.

Wow! These drums look & sound awesome! You seem to be acquiring a lot of vintage Tama Drums lately. As for Fibes, my first kit was a Fibes Crystalite Cleat kit from the 1970s with an 16” X 18” bass drum, an 8” X 12” rack Tom , & a 14” X 14” floor Tom. The kit sounded good, but I felt limited by it so I traded it for the 1987 Pure White Pearl Export that I currently have & love playing nowadays. However, I still have the Pure White Maxwin by Pearl 5 1/2” X 14” snare drum that was with my Fibes kit when I got it. It matches up perfectly with the Export kit & sounds great.

It's the first time I've heard a fiberglass set and not a bad sound at that. Love the nice tone you're getting from your Tom's. The only thing is for me a four piece isn't big enough. I had to use two different size Xacto blades to painstakingly cut the various mounting holes out for the mounted and floor tom. Each took about 20-30 minutes. And I haven't cut the floor tom leg mount holes. Or wrapped the bass drum. They look soo good, but goddamn...the hole cutting is killing me.
