Excellent interview. I agree with him wholeheartedly. I have worked in the entertainment industry in various jobs and in various niches within this industry, and I have to say, you have to pay your dues. I didn't start out getting a job in the entertainment industry when I first moved to Los Angeles in 1983. I worked odd jobs, from Carl's Jr. to a health food store in Santa Monica, to working as a custom vinyl drawer liner installer for a high end bathroom supply store in Beverly Hills, to eventually getting into the Screen Extras Guild (which doesn't actually exist anymore), all the while taking acting and stand up comedy workshops to eventually getting acting and voice-over gigs for Disney and DreamWorks.
I have worked as a theme park designer, a character developer for animated cartoons, a voice-over actor for Disney Theme Parks and DreamWorks Interactive and I have had many other amazing and crazy jobs in my thirty one years working here in Hollywood. But you HAVE to pay your dues. Unless you are the offspring of some already well-established, well-to-do, movie star or other financially comfortable insider, you have to set your "I want it NOW" attitude aside and realize that you have to actually WORK and show that you are willing to put in the required time to actually learn something while on the job.
Being humble and grateful and thankful honestly, always helps too. I have always been so grateful for all the amazing jobs that were offered to me. Show some attitude and watch how fast job offers dry up or don't come at all, because if anything else, Hollywood is a very tight-knit community and rumors and stories get around fast.

The entertainment industry is the strangest industry out there. Everyone likes movies and television and a lot of people think that it would be great to make them but not many realize how much work gets put into them and how little you get paid. DO NOT GO INTO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO GET RICH! You have to have a passion that is all consuming and be willing to work for free/ practically nothing for a long, long time and be grateful for it. It is strange and definitely not for everyone.

I'll be honest, I was offered an internship opportunity at Anheiser Busch, but I was already locking down an opportunity as this lowkey soccer club. I was not guaranteed a position at Busch, simply the opportunity to apply and put my name in the pool of interns to be selected. I sidestepped Busch and said "I'm sticking with the soccer club"... It was an amazing experience. It was only one guy in charge of everything media and video/picture related, and I feel I have elevated the organization to the next level with its media presence with my knowledge of mographs and filmmaking. My supervisor is a magnificent guy with decades of experience with Fox Sports, ABC, and our city's baseball team. I see him as someone I can look up to and I see us as a team to make great media things for our organization. I don't regret it for a second. The student who took the Busch position is working 40 hours a week under very strict guidelines, essentially a PA or Grip most weeks. Moving boxes, lights, or set equipment around. 0 creative control or expression... I don't regret where I landed in the slightest. Sometimes you won't land a big gig right off the bat, but you may find connections and a nice home to stay.
