The yellow for the calvary bandana was due to yellow being the designated military color for the horsemen during the War Between the States. Red was artillery and light blue for infantry.
I love these videos it's just really cool to learn how accurate the game is to history and weird stories you find and share also I love the background and how informative you are with the videos.
I decided my character was a former Dartmouth professor, so he looks fancy-as-hell. Black stovepipe top hat, black formal coat, expensive red vest, bright gold necktie, black opera pants, embellished black boots, studded red spurs, custom black gunbelt, and a golden pince-nez. I wanted to make him unique, so he's rather portly, has shoulder length hair, and has a fancy mustache. To really hammer home his current life as a badass gunslinging hero, he often also wears a black bandolier and black rifleman gloves.
I'd like to see the historical accuracy and a price comparison for the saddles. Read an article a long time ago that said for a cattle drive you could expect about $50 and that was about as much as a new saddle. So I'd like to that
The most expensive saddle in the 1898 Sears & Roebucks Catalog was $32. Most were around $15. That said, the days of the cowboy would have been a bit before RDR2 begins, and it seems like many things were a little more expensive then (c.1870 vs 1898).
Another great video! I've found so much of the clothing in the game to be too "gangsta pimp" for my taste. To each their own. My ex-Mountain man/Trapper toon wears worn ropers, buckskin breaches, work shirt with a duster, Liberty hat and chaps. That's as close to cowboy attire as I can seem to put together from the offerings in game. Of course I have other combos for cold weather, i.e. Sobel hat and wooly chaps, etc... I'd sure like to see an historically correct Capote offered. Keep up the great work my friend!
I'm a costume design student and I absolutely love rdr2, so I've always been curious as to the accuracy of the clothing in rdr2, as I know that movies and such often make mistakes, exaggerate, or just simply make design choices favouring their own personal preference over the historical accuracy of the garments, so this video was really interesting! I am also currently working on a project in which we redesign characters from existing materials but put our own twist on it, and I chose to focus on the American West and need to research historically accurate clothing for the time, so much of the information here will be very useful! Great video! :)
I'd be really interested to see you make maybe a 3 or 5 list compilation of accurate outfits where you dress your character up as something from that era. For me I have 2 that I have created. General Robert E Lee and the El Paso Sheriff Dallas Stoudenmire which is who I use primarily. I find the game a bit more fun knowing the background of my character.
Fascinating! The part about hat customization was particularly interesting. I had never even given a thought as to why hats looked the way they did, just assumed that was how people wore their hats back then, not unlike some people today wear baseball caps the wrong way for no particular reason. I would not have imagined that there was actually a practical reason why some wore their hats the way they did. I was completely unsurprised by how outrageously inaccurate the prices in Red Dead Online are, but I was still shocked to see just how overpriced they are. I mean, a markup of over twenty-five THOUSAND percent (yet we get four percent of the historically accurate payout for bounties)... Really??? Dang, Rockstar, that's what I call cutthroat! I love Red Dead Redemption and I love this channel, keep up the great work!
Thanks Moonsun! I'm with you. I love the game, but have to call things out as I see them. I get the economy, I just think it could be better balanced is all. Thanks for the support, man, really appreciate it!
Great video with lots of very interesting info, however I really would like to have seen you talk about gloves, which is the only item of clothing in RDR2 that you missed as far as I’m aware. Most of the gloves in the game seem to be fairly realistic, but I would’ve found it interesting to hear you talk about why certain gloves were worn among certain types of people. And yes, I realise this video is nearly a year old now, but I just thought I’d mention it anyway haha. And again, really enjoyed the vid, nice work. 👍
im designing a cowboy character, helpful to know which clothing is accurate to the time period and where R* took creative liberties. Also appreciate you explaining the function of each clothing item for the cowboy
Thanks! This was a very interesting watch! Have you thought on checking out the points of interest in rdr2's main story and their real life counterparts?
There's a guy on TH-cam named Real Pixels that tackled the story mode. He put a great deal of work into it, and it's fantastic. So instead of reinventing the wheel on that one, I'd direct you to him. Superb video.
@@ManvsHistory oh yes I've watched that video, but I mean the little points of interest, like the settlers/viking rock carvings or the mammoth/whale bones Arthur can come across free roaming. Either way, if anyone sees this comment, go to Pixel's video, it's a must
I don't know if i can give next video request, but i will, historical accuracy of hunting, the animals, killing them (there is the lasso killing, i wanna know if its accurate or not) the skinning techinque, how a pelt looked like and if it fits in a scatchel or only a horse, do they really store pelts and carcasses on horse, the value a butcher would pay for a pelt/ carcass? These are the question that came up in my mind
The Tillman hat is a hat from the 1860s-70s you can see it in the painting "Crack the Whip" of the kids playing the game in front of their school house.
3:15 Is a Gamblers hat and was not as common. These hats though were not that hot nor heavy and were considered great for travelling. It is hard to find one today because they were...well...leather and left untreated tend to not last long. That being said, it is a true hat and very true to that era. Many used them for rain and snowy areas, because of the resistance of never getting soaked--unlike felt and fur. The reason you don't see them in pics is that they shine and this caused issues with pictures of the time. These hats, if original, because of the rarety are highly collectable. You need to find a catalogue during that era, 1880 to say 1890. After that, they seem to be less common. And a true version of this hat exactly how he has it, not fur nor felt. Saint-Denis would have carried this hat though I doubt other towns around Red Dead would have. I doubt Sears would have sold it, however, department stores like Goldwater's or even Macy's (Which did exist at the time) would have had it. These are the type of stores that would have carried it not a Sears. People assume Sears was the majour store at the time, it wasn't. It was founded in 1892 and while Sears did own a store before this and a catalogue it never amounted to much. Sear's store started out as a Watch/Jeweler seller until it incorporated in 1892. By this time, Sear's had left and sold it, he then joined A. C. Roebuck and the current Sears was born. Using it for Red Dead though isn't correct historically, the gang probably never even heard of Sears. MY point, you looking for something that Sears couldn't have carried because it didn't exist at the time of that hat (Which was more like the 1870s to early 1880s.) By the time of Red Dead 2, that hat was out of style though people still wore them.
Great video! 👏🏾👏🏾Now I would like a more in depth video on women's clothing accuracy, as I'm a female player with a female character, often using skirts and blouses for her. I love historical facts videos😍
Arthur's hat could be tailor-made. But I'm not sure that's a good idea for someone constantly on the run. I always find it fascinating to see these old prices. Like 85 cents for a vest on average seems so unreal. And thinking about that: I think an interesting video(series?) could be "How much would/did living in X cost for a day/week/month?" X here being either a real city/town or a RDR2-city/town for which the math is done with a comparable IRL-city/town. Then looking at some everyday-items and -services and how much they cost for what could have been considered "lower class", "middle class", and "upper class", and maybe what professions would have payed enough on average to allow that level of living. Those everyday-items being the bare minimum like "bread" for the "lower class", and more "luxurios" items like sugar, honey, or soap for the "middle class" and "upper class".
I believe the cavalier hat is more of a “macaroni” hat... which is putting a feather in your hat to look fancy perhaps a rich person educated explorer would wear it? the tillman hat may not be period accurate but my copy of “the aventures of huckleberry finn” on the cover huckleberry looks to be wearing a similar hat if my eyes aren’t mistaken. In the end of the day I am keep repeating this but thank you, I will use this info to inprove my rancher character from valentine.
Funny you mentioned the bison fur coat cuz they went on to add one, well it’s made from bear pelt but its the exact same look and even colors. Maybe they listened to you lol. Love the content
There is a story of a man taken to court in England and convicted for the hat he wore. He was wearing the Stovepipe Hat, which was the latest fashion at the time, when the police arrested him, took him to court were he was convicted because the hat was said to frighten the horses. I am not sure if this is a true story or not but the stovepipe hat became so popular even the police wore them.
They sort of do have wrist cuffs in the game, they were available to unlock with the outlaw pass season one and two, both of which featured wrist cuffs
Although I know that they didn’t exist at the time, I’d like bolo ties to be added to the game. I also want to mention that leather cuffs were added at some point a few months back.
2 things id love is the ability to close the jackets you buy and to put your belt on your waist as i don’t think back then every cowboy wears his belt on his balls
The wrist cuffs do come with one outfit from one of the season passes. Edit: I just checked and they’re leather gauntlets from Outlaw Pass 2. They look the same as the wrist cuffs.
Your channel is awesome and your descriptive narration it’s delightful; I’m impressed how much Rockstar give us the pleasure on living this kind of era with this open world game... I’m laughing especially on the ladies clothing because in online I’m playing as a female gunslinger but like you said - the women’s clothing choices were more aesthetic than practical. Have a nice year, greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷: Manvs.History. 🥰👩🏽🦱
Another great one! Man the 19th century US was one strange place.. you'd get killed by the weirdest things. On the side note.. I believe there are 1 cuffs in rdro. I believe I got it from outlaw pass 2. Not sure
There is one pair of wrist braces in the game, they came with the second outlaw pass so not available now sadly but they should make more of them and make them purchasable... for cash. I think they should add more cool cowboy hats so that people can have a bit more individuality and less ridiculous things like the cavalier hat etc which are only really there to appeal to the GTA mindset players. Great video mate!
Where would I start on the items I'd like? Arm garters would be great. There's a couple of Moonshiner outfits that have them but actual full customisation ones would be wonderful. Long gloves that go past the elbow.
Thank you for more quarantine content! I'm wondering if you've ever heard of the firearms company Uberti. They seem to specialize in manufacturing working models of some of the firearms that would be featured in RDR2. I'm not sure if videos relating to firearms are problematic or not when talking about history with some of TH-cams newer policies, but I think it might be interesting to see how their products compare to the weapons featured in RDR2.
Bracers, or leather wrist cuffs are in the game via the two Outlaw Passes Seasons 1 and 2. Limited in colour however. As for clothes, most seems pretty accurate, though some liberties were sometimes taken in regards to colours of certain attire or made of certain materials. As for the glaring inaccuracies, I'm not so sure, leather hats? Yeah questionable, but the Cavalier hat, which was popular in the 17th through 18th centuries, was just that, extant, and popular, for quite a while, years upon years, in centuries past, and every major town had a hatter, in the 19th century, when everyone of all classes creeds and colours, over the age of majority, wore hats. One need not try to hard to be able to imagine that someone began selling revival haute courture hats. Milliners did a pretty big trade in custom hats for certain sectors of society just like Cobblers did with cowboys boots. There's only one item that really stands out, as I know even by the early 20th century, Scottish weavers and tailors began to champion for trade protections for such attire, and that is there seems to be a particular pair of pants that look like Tartan trews. Not sure they'd be very common in the 19th century US, and if they did show up at all, they'd probably be made from Scottish wool, IN Scotland, and imported from there, as you don't see much else tartan in pictures of the wild West. That kind of foreign hand made imported clothing, made usually in a very small area, as opposed to button down shirts, common across Europe, would maybe be expensive, but also, probably only sold in large cities. Walking in to Tumbleweed and walking out in a pair? Dubious for sure.

Thanks Ltngstrike! Appreciate the support!
Glad it came in handy! If you're looking for clothing for specific people/occupations, see my "How to create a historical...." vids.
I like that idea. Thanks HW!
Happy to help, Yoda.
Thanks buddy. Yeah, I have some components of this on my list. Have to look into a bit of it further. Appreciate the suggestion!
Alright, thank you for answering
One of my favorites is the worn cavalry hat, looks good on Arthur.
This was fabulous thank you!
I truly enjoy your videos, thank you for your consistent content
Glad you like them!
I love this channel, I'm surprised its not more popular
Thanks Walker. Really appreciate you subscribing!
Wrist cuffs are in the game as a purchase item for the collector role. Great video as are the rest. Keep em coming.
The Tillman hat is a hat from the 1860s-70s you can see it in the painting "Crack the Whip" of the kids playing the game in front of their school house.
Good catch, thank you, General!
@@ManvsHistory No problem! Iv'e now noticed the slight curve on the brim but the feather and dome like design look similar.
0:31 *sweats nervously knowing I damn well did this before in story*
Nice to see the part about fur coats knowing that they were recently added, nice video!
Yep, I'm pleased they were able to add them in.
You are absolutely fascinating to watch. Please keep up this awesome content!
Thanks for the kind words, Ashley. Much obliged.
This is exactly the type of research R* should do more of.
My request has been fulfilled!
You got it, buddy.
11:14 The guy in the right literally has Arthur's neckerchief.
I have two pair of wrist cuffs... (gauntlets) were rewards from Outlaw Pass participation.
The wrist cuffs are in the game but they were limited time and now are gone.
They sort of do have wrist cuffs in the game, they were available to unlock with the outlaw pass season one and two, both of which featured wrist cuffs
Wow. So its actually historically Accurate that i kill people for their hats in story mode 😂
Although I know that they didn’t exist at the time, I’d like bolo ties to be added to the game. I also want to mention that leather cuffs were added at some point a few months back.
Impressive effort and Great job done on fact checking historical accuracy of RDR !!! +1 Subscriber !
Welcome aboard, Mehdi! Appreciate the support!
you can buy leather wristcuffs from madam Nazar, but not from stores though
2 things id love is the ability to close the jackets you buy and to put your belt on your waist as i don’t think back then every cowboy wears his belt on his balls
Ha! I agree, the belt placement is terrible.
currently making a story bout a outlaw so this channel really helps me with making the right consistency.
spelled that wrong
Glad I can help out then, Emory!
The wrist cuffs do come with one outfit from one of the season passes.
Edit:
I just checked and they’re leather gauntlets from Outlaw Pass 2. They look the same as the wrist cuffs.
Love the profile pic, Stanetti. Glad you took the red pill.
Man vs. History
I took it years ago, my friend. Great content, top Kek 👍🏻.
@@stanettiels7367 Haha! You know it. I'm a based history merchant. That's a super rare Pepe in higher ed, you know.
river junction trade co has amazing reproduction of clothing.
i had an 80% beaver, Beaver Brand hat, AMAZING
Cons of 2020:
WW3
Covid 19
Aliens
Toilet Paper Shortage
Murder Hornets
Civil Unrest
Pros of 2020:
Any video from Man vs. History
#notallheroswearcapes
Love it. Thanks man!
This series is gold👍 keep it going
Your channel is awesome and your descriptive narration it’s delightful; I’m impressed how much Rockstar give us the pleasure on living this kind of era with this open world game... I’m laughing especially on the ladies clothing because in online I’m playing as a female gunslinger but like you said - the women’s clothing choices were more aesthetic than practical. Have a nice year, greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷: Manvs.History. 🥰👩🏽🦱
Thanks Maria, glad to hear you enjoyed it! Stay well in PR!
One of my OLD relatives Wyatt Earp was in the video yay
You can get a fur coat from Gus if you kill a 3 star grizzly bear.
John Marstons Rancher outfit from the first red dead has leather wrist cuffs I believe
Another great one! Man the 19th century US was one strange place.. you'd get killed by the weirdest things. On the side note.. I believe there are 1 cuffs in rdro. I believe I got it from outlaw pass 2. Not sure
Thanks man. Yeah, somebody else mentioned the cuffs! I missed it, but glad to hear they added it!
@@ManvsHistory They look a lil bit different than the ones in the vid. They have like fluffy wool ends
Great video as usual you legend!
Thanks Jacob! Appreciate the support, man.
People: we want a real cowboy hat
Rockstar: BiRdWeLl HaT
There is one pair of wrist braces in the game, they came with the second outlaw pass so not available now sadly but they should make more of them and make them purchasable... for cash. I think they should add more cool cowboy hats so that people can have a bit more individuality and less ridiculous things like the cavalier hat etc which are only really there to appeal to the GTA mindset players. Great video mate!
Thanks Ghost Rider! Appreciate the support, my friend!
I'm curious about the accuracy of the half-chaps (like a gaiter) and the Hardie boots
Amazing work and info, thank you
You bet, man! Glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to check out the other vids- there's many!
The fur coat and leather gauntlet got added a little while back maybe a rockstar employee watches some of these videos.
Gus actually sells the bear pelt coat you are talking about if you take him a perfect bear pelt it's called the mauberry coat
Yeah that would be interesting. Solid idea.
Hats like the "Tillman hat" are historically accurate for poor farmhands on latin-america, from early 1800 all the way to late 1900's.
Hey dude! They added a bear coat that is very simillar to the big fur coats you mention and show. It looks very nice, find it at gus.
What is wrong with RDO prices, it looks like they are going through severe economic inflation
