the only thing that would make this video better is if the girls in the front moved outta the way im here to see the musicians not to simp for some girls...bruh
It's really refreshing to see so many young people so passionate about music. This is why schools NEED music programs. So many talented kids with bright futures :)
I did orchestra for 4 years (3 middle school and 1 high school) and the program was cut..i was devastated. The band was left and learning a trombone was interesting and I loved it.. Found out I can't read music but play by sound..😄😄
For the people who say the trumpets are blasting, THEYRE SUPPOSED TO BLAST this isn't supposed to be musical this is supposed to be excited and get the crowd pumped up which is what they did. This was incredible
@@dkoda840 HENCE HBCU. DID YOU READ? OR WAS THIRSTY TO COMMENT. WE ALL KNOW FAMU IS GREAT. THEY ALL ARE WE BLACK. THAT'S WHAT WE DO. NO SURPRISE. ITS ROOM FOR ALL
I was there and I've always had a slight bias towards SU because 3 out of my 4 grandparents went. both my parents, two of my uncles and plenty of other family are all SU alumni. As a former band student I must say this rendition was great.
I'm 15, in the marching band where I'm the minority (I'm black) and I actually cried when I heard this because i feel like I'm missing out on so many things with my own people so that's why I wanna go to an HBCU school and the only motivates me more so thanks
After a while your lips condition to this style of playing it doesn't take long to strengthen them trust me being a tuba player I'd have real bad looking lips until I mastered cranking
Being a trumpet player in my marching band, I am in love with those high notes. I especially love how much everyone really got into the music and just had a good time. Amazing, well done!
+Rimenuir Lumfatnur I marched corps style in high school and then switched to show style when I went to an HBCU. There are things i enjoy about both, but marching show style was my absolute favorite. It was war on the field against the other band and people came to the games just to see the bands battle. Dancing and playing at the same time was something else I had to get use to doing. Choose a great HBCU with a great band program to get a TRUE HBCU band experience.
Just here to say that the girls aren't cheerleaders!!! They are majorette dancers that actually preform when it's halftime and also when the band is playing throughout the game, which is common in these type of bands and some others, these girls are almost always with the band, their part of the band (of course not in the instrument aspect) they are the fabulous southern university dancing dolls with 50 years of tradition!!!
Trumpets almost stole the show from the dancers. Almost. Superb performance. So moody and atmospheric. These bands are moving away from traditions and learning to do everything and anything. Love it.
I am a proud Gramblinite. However, I must give credit to SU for this performance. I'm not alone based on the favorable reviews from Billboard Magazine on-line and USA Today! A diverse range of music and showmanship are what make all of our bands unique. Despite the unyielding loyalties to our respective schools, we celebrate individual and collective successes among our friendly rivals! So it is in the lyrical content of Adele's song that I commend "the Human Juke Box" and the entire SU Family by simply saying, "Hello from the other side...." (CDG GSU c/o '93)
For the ones that never heard Adell sing her song hello she starts off soft and then she carry the song high SU played it just like she sings it im so proud of them
its jxy To provide a deep, rich tone for the entire band because almost every instrument (except maybe mello and sousaphone) is very very bright, so the saxes and clarinets help balance it out. Every instrument serves a certain purpose otherwise it wouldn't be in the band in the first place.
its jxy I'm not sure because the brass section always seem to play really loud. But they should because it's one of the most "softest" instruments. That's why almost every band wants around 13 clarinets in a band.
Hearing these big bands reminds me of listening to the big sound of a choir. There are many parts, but they are all in unison with each other. I love it.
While I am biased on having a color guard I can't stand people saying these dancers are "strippers"??!! This song is kind of limiting on choreography but these girls are absolutely gorgeous! The one in the front is literally perfection lol she reminds me of Drumline with Nick Cannon
The whole entire band sounded absolutely amazing. I'm a 7th grader and I play sousaphone and I thought we were good. This hand is definitely one of the most talented bands around. 11-10. Keep up the hard work.
Man I love being black by popular demand...and this is exactly why! I'm here in 2020 and this is refreshing to know that Black Excellence will continue forever...them trumpets though!!! 🎺
They sound amazing. They have their own style and that's fine. People in this comment section are forgetting that music is to bring people together, not make it about what band or race is better. Smh. I'm sad y'all lost sight of that as musicians.
Honestly this band is apart of the reason I fell in love with music, 1999 Southern Homecoming Parade I was 5 they stopped right in front of where I was standing on the road and did “No Trouble by C Loc” when I tell you it sounded exactly like the radio I had never heard music live before was completely blown away, forever grateful I got to experience that

Question - is this from my home town of Savannah's Southern University? I loooove this performance. I love the intensely varied dynamics, the "laggy" tempo and cymbals, I really love it. It's perfect. Such a unique take. I don't care if the rhythm thing was intentional or not but I just love it. Love the crazy volume. Must have been awesome to be there.
The sound quality of this video doesn't live up to hearing it being played live. You felt it vibrate through to your bones as It echoed throughout the stadium.
It is 2020 and the corona virus dominates the airways, but, as a white person from North Carolina, I must say that this band is extraordinary and this performance is absolutely inspiring and demonstrative of pure excellence.
I rarely listen to these type of performances, as they typically sacrifice tonality for volume,(yes, I understand that is the style...but still) but I must say this was amazing! The hornline was so much in tune for the most part even with the rips. Very nice control! Good Job!
This video doesn't even do the Jukebox's live performance. When I tell you that hearing SU play this in person, it was HEAVEN!!!! I love the Jukebox and this song. TALK ABOUT CHILLS!
Phenomenal performance Southern University! Loved the music & the Dancing Dolls performance was very well done; these young ladies know they can dance.
