The problem of the Spanish with English is that they make fun of everyone who tries to speak English correctly, and that makes many speak it with an accent (rare for them) that they consider to be not good English. This makes them ashamed of themselves, and therefore, if they can't, neither can you.

    • @Herr_Artago
      @Herr_Artago 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

Exactly, that's really sad about Spain, most people will laugh at others who try to pronounce correctly.

    • @AlexandreFortesYT
      @AlexandreFortesYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I've defenitely seen the mockery in middle school and high school, but not in adults (I am a young adult). I have a friend with a very good English accent (British accent for that matter) and I myself used to think that it was weird for a Spaniard to speak like that. We didn't mock the guy or anything but we would cringe and we thought the dude was a try-hard xd. Anyways, what I mean is that I believe people grow from that and with time they actually start encouraging those speaking fluently and with a nice accent, but it is most defenitely still a problem in young teenagers (for the mockery you mentioned) and in older adults and the elderly who don't even speak a word in English because they were never taught.

      Really?😹 It's really funny

    • @Herr_Artago
      @Herr_Artago 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@AlexandreFortesYT I've also seen it in Adults. I saw once people laughing at a girl for saying Greenwich correctly (grenich instead of grinwich as most Spaniards say it, sorry but I can't type phonetically, so I used Spanish phonetics). I've worked as an English teacher for adults and people would be laughing at the ones who try to pronounce correctly, like if they were pedantic. Unfortunately such appalling attitude is quite common in Spain, at least in Gran Canaria, where I'm from.

@@ashleyd4563 There are differences and many are related to Quality Management that has been resolved in the USA a long time ago. For example, the telephone internet company Movistar transfered the service when we moved from Madrid to another community small town and charged as usual for months. We found out this small town doesn't have fiber optic and Movistar didn't offer an alternative service. They could get away with it and damaged our credit. In USA they are made to take responsibility through Federal Commission of Telecommunications. And this is just a small example of many things that has to be fixed in the system.

Glad you liked it! Try the North or the Mediterranean coast next time, they're very different between themselves and from Madrid itself. Galicia and Asturias have quite the Celtic touch to themselves and you'd feel like it has sort of a southern Irish sense to it. Catalonia and the Valencian community are very in touch with their second tongue, Catalan, which might be interesting to see and hear to someone from other parts of Spain, let alone for an American. And if you felt like Madrid liked to party, I strongly recommend you to try Alicante, in Southern VC, or Andalusia, that can also definitely boast about having some of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Spain and Europe. I hope that when this awful pandemic is over and if you really desire to, for you to have the chance to explore my jewel of a country on a deeper level. Amazing video and cheers!

Hi! I think spaniards are so shy when It comes to speak in English because schools doesn’t really teaches how to have a fluent conversation, they just teach you how to use the verbs and some vocabulary (depends of the school obviously), so sometimes Is hard for us to follow a conversation even though we try so hard!😅

We look at each other, at one another. We have a strong internalised sense of group and belonging. People do not feel offended or intruded because someone is looking at them, rather they feel acknowledged. It comes natural to lock eyes with strangers. Honestly, I think going around in a city where no one makes eye contact or looks at you would make me feel isolated.

I’ve had experience in Russian schools and German schools myself, and I’ve seen schools in France, China and South America. Many children develop hatred and anxiety towards English just because of the established methods. It’s a waste of time and torture the way English is being taught, well, everywhere. People spend 5 years on average and countless hours of their lives learning it but they don’t speak it afterwards! Seriously, “English grammar” is a scare word like “Hitler” for most of us and that’s because the material was being transmitted with no passion, no fun, no speaking the language during class. A language is a living thing but it’s being taught like an autopsy and most teachers make the experience as pleasant as a dissection of a corpse. Teaching and learning languages needs a paradigm shift.

When dining out we/ I certainly received a bunch of stares. This apparently wasn’t a thing in Galicia but in Madrid it certainly was. Frankly I was very put off by the stares and at one point I was even approached by someone, he came to apologize to me because I think he and his group realized that I caught their stares one to many times and that it was bothering me. Thank you for sharing this because I had no idea that this was somewhat common. I won’t be an overly dramatic Americano next time. Besos

In comparison with other europe countries I think that our level of english is bad. We translate ALL the movies and series. This doesn't help the people to learn english. The spanish is also an important lenguage (not as important as english but much more than greek, sweedish or italian) and we have a lot of information in spanish on the internet.

With the last point, the problem that we Spaniards have is that we do not practice it enough in our day to day life, so when we speak it for the first time we feel shy and insecure about what the other person's going to think and especially if the person with whom you are going to speak's their native language, apart in public schools they do not give importance to English or it's not a weighty subject and as a consequence you can take 5 years studying the same temary and not progress at all.

As spaniard I find very interesting to see our country from the point of view of a foreigner (in your case an american point of view), besides that I recommend you to visit Andalucía some day cause if you liked Madrid you're gonna love Andalucía for sure, also we speak a little bit different here because of the different accents xD
I haven't had many opportunities to visit places from my own country yet but here where I live I think it's a "must visit place" if you ever go to Spain, the one day I could visit Madrid already felt stressful for me lol and I could even feel the air more polluted as I'm used to live outer cities so I'm just not used to do my life fast at all and I don't even want to cause not falling into it leads to quality of life and tranquility imo ^ ^ (or said in another way like the life I want to live isn't focused on work)
Though all the many good things keep in mind that some places can still be kinda dangerous, as an advice lul
Edit: btw I think that the spanish people that have a good english isn't thanks to school but other ways to learn it like:
    - academies
    - living in other country for a period of time
    - music, games or series in english
    - using it on the internet either for writing or talking with english people
    - etc
    * I have learned most of my english by self-teaching myself by playing videogames, translating songs I like from english to spanish, searching the words I don't know and noting them in my "personal english dictionary" to not forget them until I have them totally memorized, and talking with a friend I made from other country on the internet (this last one really helped me improve my talking which was the one I had the most lack of), and I still learning new english stuff regularly ^ ^

America is a continent that extends from Chile and Argentina in the south all the way to Alaska and Canada on the North. It is not possible all people in America is always in a hurry. It depends, in cities like Bogota or Buenos Aires, per instance, this is the case but if you go to little towns in the Andes (as an example), people is really calm and never in a hurry.

About the fact that spaniards are not confident with their english is because we start learning english from a very young age, BUT, they start with the grammar instead of teachin how to talk. In Every culture, you start learning the language and after that, you start learning grammar. In Spain we are retarded and we teach english grammar before speaking, so we never have the opportunity to upgrade or evolve our speaking and that's why even knowing a lot about grammar and stuff, we don't feel confortable speaking english, just because we never had the opportunity to talk and that make us feel that we are not good at it. It is just lack of practice.

I'm in my second year as a language assistant also in Madrid. These are totally true! When it come to English i found the younger the person, the better the English. The older generation just wasn't taught and middle aged ppl are better at reading and listening than speaking, again it's how they were taught, some even refuse to speak even though they understand you. Now with ppl like us it is greatly improving with the younger generations.
A shock for me was standing in line. 🤭 When you enter a place you don't just stand in line, you have to ask others who is last in line because some are sitting or even standing outside. 😱

Hi Morgan. My GF Alejandra and I like your videos* very much (especially your dog!).

Although I am Spanish born my parents emigrated to Venezuela in the 1950s and most of my schooling K-12 was in English or American schools. I am functionally bilingual and Alejandra (from Venezuela) is also fluent.

We agree on your 10 (very positive) "shocks" and would like to add some information you might appreciate regarding the last one.
Spain was kinda closed in for a long time. Many Spaniards emigrated to Spanish America (like my parents). Those who remained here didn't travel much. Certainly not for tourism or work until, maybe the last 20-25 years or so.
Around the 2000s (give or take) young people started to travel and took a much stronger interest in learning English. So much so that there are even some cinemas that show movies in the original English. That didn't happen before.
When I moved back here in 2001 I taught English to the locals. I experimented the stark generational difference between older people who speak no English at all and a younger set who travel all over the world a LOT and are reasonably (and some very) fluent in English
I think it is still true that a person from, say Mexico or Colombia, speaks English better than an equivalently educated person from Spain but that's changing fast.
We are really glad you enjoyed your stay in Spain. I've lived in many countries and feel culturally very close to the USA and Britain. Nonetheless, I believe Spain is probably the best place to live in.
btw: If you want to practice your Spanish while working out, doing YOGA and dancing, check out our TH-cam channel (enformaconale). We'd love to hear your comments and to see you in the chat whenever we are live.

Incluso muchos no sabemos bailar....

      www.eldiario.es/economia/sindicatos-alemanes-siesta-trabajadores-climatico_1_1368250.html

Morgan, we lived in Southern Spain for 5 years in the 1980s and I guess things have not changed that much. I also love the pace of life there. When you got used to the pace it was fine. I found money tended to motivate an Andalusian to get things done, but it was always at their pace. I did love the pace of life. When I transferred back to the States, I was driving home on I-95 at rush hour and I was totally disoriented. Cars were speeding past me and I just wanted to pull my car to the side of the road to decompress. We are now in the habit of eating dinner later than most Americans. We lived in a mixed neighborhood of expats and Spaniards and as I was heading off to bed I could hear my neighbors finishing dinner. Most of the homes in my neighborhood all had large verandas and were set up for eating in a enclosed cooler area. We also had a gardener and a maid that sort of came with the house. My gardener was pure Andalusian. I had to pay careful attention to him when we talked. He has a sing-songy style of speaking with a very pronounced Southern Spanish accent. It was all fun and an adventure.

Hi, I am Spanish, I really appreciate your video mentioning my country, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart that my country caught your attention, I hope you like it. I just wanted to tell you that of everything you said, everything was fine, everything was perfect, but there is a detail that I wanted to correct the phrase "together but not scrambled" its meaning is simple and has to do with the personality of us Spaniards, I don't know if you know but Here there were many political upheavals, terrible facts as far as politics is concerned, there was a terrible regime made by Franco, that led us to that phrase, which means: that one can be kind, share, receive and give, but there is a limit where only he can be.

The thing about english in Spain is that it isn't a language we use at all (unless you have to talk to foreigners, which isn't that common unless it's part of your job), and even though it has been taugh in schools for a long time, most people over 40 have probably forgotten because they didn't grow with internet and content in english to practise.
For all of this, I have found that we usually feel extremely awkward when we have to speak in english to people we know it's their mother language, and most adults don't even remember how to.
(For context, I'm a spanish 18 year old)

The first one's even funnier because when I went to Primary school, the book we used to learn math was called 'Paso a Paso,' literally translated to 'Step by Step,' though I don't know if that's unique.

    Hi I'm Spanish.
Nice video, just a few things:
1-is your dog a Boston Terrier or a French Bulldog? Usually I can tell them apart but this time I'm not sure.
2-At 1:09 I think those dogs walk slowly because they are fat English Bulldogs rather than because of being in Spain.
3-Even though the date of your video shows year 2021 I guess all the things you say about partying and all the pictures of people close to each other belong to before the pandemic right? Because covid has hit Spain very hard, and one of the things that many of us worry about is the impact it's gonna have on the economy and employment of the country. Meanwhile the US are already growing, well done!

Spainiards are obnoxiously proud of their country/region/city when talking to outsiders, but when they talk to other spainiards they tend to be overly critical and pessimistic about Spain, it´s kind of an "unwritten rule" to look patriotic when there are non-spainiards around.
