  • In this video, Professor Pipes talks about an activity she created called "The Cards You Were Dealt." This activity is perfect for introducing new books and stories, as you have your students delve into the lives of the characters, seeing things from their perspectives. It's ideal for starting off a characterization / character motivation dialogue in your classrooms and requires very little prep work from you. Enjoy!

Note: The premise for this activity is based off of a PD day we had with the Anti -Defamation League, wherein we had to discuss our personal characteristics and identities and then take on a given identity. I immediately knew it would be a perfect activity for understanding characters (or eras), as well!
Piper's Paraphrases takes a lighthearted but educational approach to literature and all things English! These videos can be used to help you learn from home, study for an English/literature class, or create classroom lessons. Enjoy, like, and subscribe!

Hello! Thank you for sharing this strategy! Would you be willing to share your resources with me? I also teach To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, and I would LOVE to use this strategy to introduce my kiddos to those texts.

I wanted to let you know that I added some resource links for this video on my website, so if you go there and find this episode in the “Episodes” tab, there is now a link at the bottom that will take you to a folder with links to these assignments.
