Thanks for posting this! Saved me a tearful ride! I live in Elsinore and could see this fire from my home. My wife and I ride Ortega Hwy to get to Cooks Corner in Orange County often. Now I will share this video with my online friends at the Harley-Davison forum.
In case some folks might not know, the Ortega HWY runs between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore in California. When friends and I rode the road back in August it was overcast and cool until we dropped down into Lake Elsinore where it was sunny and 106 degrees.
Thanks for the video. Gee how many times we’ve been up and down that road in the last 25 or so years. Heartbreaking. I feel sympathy for those that lost life and property. This impacts the whole community. Regards.
Where you pulled over on South Main Divide Rd it looked like Decker Canyon down below. Lots of houses burned. Lots of oak trees that went up like a Roman candle...very rare except in hot, intense fires. It was oak trees that covered all those cars. Such a shame to see trees old than all the houses go down.
I rode over to Trabuco Creek yesterday but the road was still Closed. They had some good daily maps posted there, so strange how it started near the RC airport there and spread so far! There were some really impressive air videos of the tankers spreading retardant. Take care all.
My brother lives in Ortega Oaks. I love visiting him and riding on that once stunning hwy 74. This video is very upsetting for me. So sad. Thanks for posting it though. 😎👍
I also ride Ortega frequently, and went there last weekend. We probably crossed our ways there. Saw the remaining fire on the mountain on the left (going down to Lake Elsinor), and was gone on my way back couple hours later. The images are impressive, really sad!
Thank you for the ride along to view the fire damage. Haven’t been on a bike for treats. It will be awhile before it comes back to looking pretty again. 😒
I haven’t gone on a bike in years. Don’t know where the treats came from except maybe my phone was correcting something. Motorcycling is a lot of fun if you have a careful driver and when sitting behind are not sitting higher than the driver. 😁
This is Major Destruction ! I have been riding motorcycles on Ortega Hwy 74 since 1969 I know Barbra Lookout Road House , Tyler who built Hells Kitchen [2004] and many Locals .
Man. That is so much worse than I thought. I know the Ortega like the back of my hand. I have been riding it and driving it for over 55 years. Due to all the destruction I had to think hard where you were on the route due to all my landmarks were gone... Hell's had already burned (insurance fire I suspect.).
Yeah, many have speculated that about Hells, not sure what the truth is. They did go through the effort of repairing the roof of the building from that burn, not sure what the future holds for that place.
Have rode Ortega countless times. Wow..................do not even recognize it anymore. Rode Hwy 39 yesterday and that as well got hit by a Fire, then the Ranger chased me out, they do not want any motorcycles even though it is Open. Nice filming with Drone.
They can't restrict legally licenced motorcycles from riding on any public road that is open to the public. They can raise cain with you if you're running aftermarket or modified exhaust though!
This is just heartbreaking to see. I retired in 2018 from Caltrans Div. of Equipment. My boss & I rode that pass with a group called The Unprincipled Larrikins on our way to the MotoDoffo winery where they have a motorcycle museum. I have pictures of our group at the Overlook standing on those big rocks. It was a beautiful & epic ride through there then. This really sucks! Feel so bad for those who lost their homes & the guy with the vintage cars too. Thank you for sharing your video. You did a great job.
your video just showed up in my feed i watched and subscribed your channel great video man i use to live there our home burnt so did my motorcycles and car i posted in my channel a video of the destruction luckly we had insurance ride safe brother see you in the highway once i buy a new bike Cheers
The destruction in Cariso is terrible. That road that you were going to turn right on can take you all the way to Clinton Keith. Turn left instead there and if the roads aren’t blocked, you can go to the top of Saddleback and down to Trabuco canyon. I think that MG on the corner in Cariso was for sale before it burned. Thanks for sharing the video. Very sad.
I’ve been visiting San Clemente/Dana Point from England since 82. Drove the Ortega a few times. At the San Juan end on the right I visited a ranch with Horse,The owner had quite a few cars I wonder if there his!
That MG under the Tree, was a 1972 MGB, that was marked for sale for at least the last 7 years, that I’ve seen driving by. As a collector of old cars, and Beetle’s, that is really a heart breaker…! More cars destroyed, by a senselessly started fire, by cal trans workers!! More reason to sell off your cars, if you’re not really ever going to restore them. Give them a fighting chance!! These met a terrible fate, and lost…
60+ years in So Cal and watching all the fires during those years I've learned a thing or 2. This is 100% natural, the hills/forests are made to burn and if you live in those areas you must know that. If you don't, you didn't do your homework. Not that I don't have sympathy for people who lose/lost everything and the heart break/upheaval that comes, that really sucks, but it should be expected. I'd love to live in those areas and if I did I'd at least know there is a very high chance it will all be burnt up at some point. At least there is a very low chance of fire in those areas now, can't say the same 20 years from now. Best of luck!
I don't know where you came up with the "Highway Fire" but that fire was in Fallbrook back in 2014. Everything that burned along Ortega was caused by the "Airport Fire" . No meeting of fires, just "Airport Fire" Fortunatly Oak trees withstand fire and might be a little black around their base but will be green next year..
The day they closed Ortega Highway, I looked at the various fire maps from OC Fire Authority and CalFire, one of them showed the Airport Fire marked, and another fire was marked in El Cariso Village as the Highway Fire. Not something I'm making up, it's just what I saw at the time. Clearly the Airport fire spread all that way, but at the time of closing Ortega Hwy (Sept 10th, Tuesday, in the morning) the airport fire was still some distance away and not near Ortega. Clearly it spread and jumped Ortega and did all the damage, but at the initial closure one of the Fire maps indicated a #HighwayFire. May have been a mistake on someones part, it definitely seemed odd to me.
Yep! I work at Camp Pendleton and drive through Fallbrook every day! I never understood why they named that fire "The Highway Fire". All that I saw was along Mission Road.
We drove thru this area 6 weeks ago, there was a fire put out mere feet from homes. It's highly suspicious two separate fires burned and merged together. Sure seems like they want this area cleared out. Also kinda weird how last year they began canceling homeowners insurance in anticipation of this..
I remember in 1975 me and a couple of my surf buddies just got our new Cadillac wheels for a skateboards and at sunrise skateboarding from the lookout all the way down to Lake Elsinore it was a wild ride Tim sigsbee and Mike Arreola you guys f****** remember that awesomely gnarly time then we had to hitchhike back up Ortega to get to our car at the lookout
I did this drive last week. Before the fire, you couldn't see those car hordes. That one property had hundreds of cars. A lot of classic cars gone. The fire station up there made it though. I thought for sure that place would be gone.
Man thats a bummer, I drove that for my commute and that dude had so many different classic cars. He used to put one out for sale on the road feom time to time. I would always slpw down and see what I could see as I drove by. What a shame.
Well the fire that just missed this same area (only about a mile or two NORTH from this fire 2 years ago: "The Holy Fire" Took out a chunk of Lake Elsinore.
You can say that if the brush. But, if you drive through parts of Cleveland National Forest there are tons of standing burnt trees. It will never be what it was in your lifetime or mine.
@@jmiller990 A fire went through the El Cariso Village about 30 years ago. I flew over the area a year after and you really had to look to see anything.
In the decades I've been riding and driving on Ortega Hwy. This is the first time I have seen something like this! I wish California would return to forest management. The devastation eliminates the species the activists say they are trying to save! Thank you for sharing!
Excellent report. Thanks for posting 👍

Looked like quite a collection of old British cars burned up. More than a few MG's, maybe some Triumphs and maybe a Jag XKE I saw? Sad.

All of the local Southern California forests are being burned to the ground

So sad to see...one of my go to rides....🙏🏼

Maybe "holy smokes" isn't the best term when documenting a massive wildfire
Well the fire that just missed this same area (only about a mile or two NORTH from this fire 2 years ago: "The Holy Fire" Took out a chunk of Lake Elsinore.
Well apparently burned through Holy Jim Falls so it’s just all ironic and sad.
Ok I must been living under a rock or something because never knew there was even a fire up there.
what bike is that?
2019 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S
Come back next year it will be all green again trust me.
Yeah, crazy how fast mother nature springs back to life.
Many people lost everything & will never be able to replace their life's memories & possessions.

Flying a drone In a temporary flight restricted area, good one. You are now that guy.
9 years driving that road. Sorry my new product hasn't made it to the market yet that will stomp out wildfires.

Surface of the moon does not have trees.
Did they catch the ass that started it?
😕
Holy shnikies
Depressing music bud...
Depressing situation, people lost their homes.
FYI....you are not allowed to fly a drone near a wildfire.
