I, Cato Sicarius, know that I, the most esteemed Cato Sicarius, am the only choice for chapter master. In fact, that old man Calgar should hurry up and die already so that I, Cato Sicarius, can take my rightful place as eternal chapter master Cato Sicarius of the Ultramarines.
I doubt Cato and Severus are still rivals. Cato's time in the warp really messed with him. His fire has be snuffed out. Guilliman himself notices this.
Severus was named Tetrarch of Konor, Cato made a bodyguard for a primarch. We know primarchs don’t need bodyguards. So we know who guilliman respects, and who needs to be managed away from command.
The Victrix Guard isn't a true protection unit. Ever practical, Guilliman uses the Victrix Guard as a leadership course for promising Astartes. Not to mention Cato reminds him of Thiel; self-assured, if a bit cocky and has a preference for unconventional doctrines with little regard for general dogma. Bobby G places him in his personal guard to smooth out his rough edges.
@@Warmaster2001 More of an internship really. He likes his aggression and unorthodox tactics, traits he also valued in Thiel. He's simply smoothing out his rough edges by teaching him to act less brashly.
@@outis7080 good. To be honest I like when ultraboys doing non-codex things and it works so effectively than they do it codex way and have less success (perfect example is Titus and Ventris). After all codex is just a book not a holy text.
I never was a big fan of Cato I hope Titus gets his own novel and a third space marine game I can see him becoming the chapter master of the ultramarines
Uriel definitely has the sheer variety of experience for the role. He's worked with the deathwatch. He's been disgraced by the chapter and sent to his death in the eye of terror only to successfully accomplish his oath and redeem himself. I could definitely see big daddy gman promoting him as the new chapter master should calgar ever finally die.
Agemman is how the Ultramarines view themselves: quietly competent, adherents of the codex, a little boring but undeniably effective, whilst Sicarius is how other chapters view the Ultramarines; haughty, arrogant but with a clear skill and nobility despite the overconfidence.
You think sicarious would have survived the daemonculaba and the other events of that book? He was lost in the warp but Uriel really went through it as bad as I've seen a space marine suffer.
I wonder if Sicarius even wants to be Chapter Master anymore. On that note I'm kind of curious to see Titus get introduced into this lot. I almost feel like Sicarius would get along with him.
The comparison between Sicarius and the attitudes of the old Luna Wolves was not one I'd considered before, and it actually makes a lot click into place for me as to why I've always felt uneasy with the prominence and influence of Sicarius in the chapter. Not that I've ever thought he'd fall to Chaos (at least not without twists of fate and Machiavellian scheming that would make even Tzeentch blush) but that his aggressive and, let's face it, arrogant nature has always reminded me more of a son of Horus from back before the fall than a son of the XIIIth. Again, that's not necessarily a bad thing-- the Luna Wolves were rightly respected as among the pre-eminent warfighters of the old Legions, and they were loyal to a fault until the systemic corruption of the Lodges and the schemes of Erebus took advantage of their ignorance to corrupt them. That kind of thing would never work on Cato or the modern chapters who've borne witness to the horrors of Chaos and their ability to corrupt through seemingly innocent avenues. Especially since the Ultramarines were always less susceptible to the appeals of the Lodges and the lure of personal glory. But I've always seen one of the strengths of Guilliman and his sons as being able to temper the arrogance that comes with their superhuman nature with recognition of their failings and the recognition that there is always more that can be done to improve. Sicarius might reflect on these things internally, but has always been less willing than almost any other son of Guilliman to let that show, which always rubbed me the wrong way. Pointing out the parallels between the arrogant cockiness of the Luna Wolves and the arrogant confidence (there is a difference in my mind) of Sicarius helped me fully get that. Thinking of him as a bold gladiator or swordsman in the Roman Empire of Ultramar to the pit fighters and brawlers of the Luna Wolves makes a lotta sense. I think Guilliman made the right call pulling him out of the line of succession like he did-- Sicarius could absolutely be a chapter master on par with Calgar or even better given time and mentorship to temper his steel, but there wasn't anyone in Ultramar (other than maybe Calgar) who could've taken that role, and being by the side of his Primarch will give him that and take some of the internal tension out of the chain of command there. Will be very curious to see how this plays out in future arcs of the story, there's a lot to be said for the stories of Space Marines having very human conflicts and personal problems.
When Calgar does finally turn up his toes Agemman will become the next chapter master however l think he will fall quickly as he is too ridged in his doctrine and Sicarius will become his successor.
I doubt that Calgar ever dies judging by his succesfull ascension to Primaris marine which biologically increasing his lifespan even more (not sure he can outlive Dante but still)
Its going to be al ong time cos Calgar himself is sooo badass, i dont see them killing or maiming him anytime soon. They stepped around it by having Cato serve his Primach for now.
