Guilderton ? Moore River is a nature based tourist asset, which lies approximately 100 kms north of Perth, just off Indian Ocean Drive. The town is situated on the last remaining river estuary (Moore River) on the Swan Coastal Plain unspoilt by development. Residents strive to maintain the near pristine environment at its best for current and future generations to enjoy. Our aim is to preserve HISTORY, be active in the PRESENT and plan our FUTURE.
The mouth of the Moore River was originally known as Gabbadah, meaning a mouthful of water. The area has been used by the Yued people for eons, and for general recreation since the earliest days of white settlement in the Gingin district. Around 1905, a 100-acre block at Gabbadah, owned by Henry Brockman, was made a reserve for picnicking and camping. A well and 3 cottages were built in 1907, people were charged one shilling per week for the use of these cottages.
The town of Guilderton was named after the Dutch guilders presumed from the Dutch sailing Ship ‘Vergulde Draeck’ found in sand dunes north of the town in 1931.
The Moore River has a catchment of over 12,000 square kms and its main source is over 200km inland. The river was named in 1836 by Private Patrick Heffron who named it after George Fletcher Moore who was the leader of the expedition that Heffron was a part of. The river flows into the ocean at Guilderton, when nature periodically opens the sandbar.
