Keep your pets indoors during the storm. Secure everything on your lawn and put it into your garage. You don’t want propane tanks and grills or tarps and umbrellas flying around

If your kids can’t swim, get them a life jacket. Some areas will see significant flooding and it’s better to over prepare than under prepare. Buy rope, flashlights, batteries, and prepare for power outages. Make sure your cell phones are charged at all times

This is predicted to be a tropical storm not a hurricane. Flooding will be the greatest risk not hurricane winds. Stay home. Keep your phones charged, have a battery powered light ready, be prepared for no electricity.

Most of the animal enclosures have shelters or rooms where the animals are kept overnight. I'd be more worried about the Safari Park's large African/Asian field animals if anything. Besides from what everyone is saying, it'll just be a tropical storm by the time it reaches California. High winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms are nothing new for Southern California and most of the animals that aren't in enclosures would likely be resilient enough to be okay.

True, cluttered city drains? = Flooding. Where I live, just because didn't clean the city drains one year, hurricane, and flooded higher land level no flood zones. Not too much, but it just hadn't happened before. Those definitely don't look too hot in the inner city homeless areas. They just have to be grabbed and taken to shelters.
Shit our drains arent ready for moderate rainfall. I remember a few years ago a bad bought of raining burst the drain pipes in redlands and some streets had flooding. Heres hoping the storm putters out before it hits us because socal is NOT ready.
Aside from heavy rainfall too fast down drains can & do flood.Most often, it is due to debris clogging drainage.. When safe enough,go clean the drains near you. I am in hurricane Alley Florida. Even after a tropical storm, our street was flooded. Got my rake out, cleaning the drains around my house & within minutes, street was dry. Stay safe!
Make sure you get dehydrated snacks and canned food for 3 days. Also water bottles. Prep a backpack in case you have to leave. Make sure you have your snacks in it and all your birth certificates and important documents.

This AND make sure all or any important medications are filled or enough oxygen tanks for loved ones that need it.
And don't forget to have a bag for your pet if you have any, but only carry/take with you a backpack with their food, their important documents, any meds they take and their favorite blanket or toy that will calm them down in a stressful situation.

Ironically, as of 6pm in Los Angeles, there are still plans to hold a CicLAvia event. This event closes down the streets to cars and opens the streets exclusively to Bikes🚴♀, Skaters🛼, Skateboarders🛹joggers🏃and Pedestrians🚶♀. This particular CicLAvia event goes back and forth between Hollywood and Koreatown....

I've already got a go-bag, my vehicles are fueled up, I bought around 400 rolls of toilet paper (in case there's another great TP shortage), a pallet of bottled water, batteries, candles, a Honda generator, extra ammo (2500 rounds), about 300 shotgun shells, 6 full gas cans, and two trauma / first aid kits.

Left out of this news piece is that you need a water temperature in the low 80's for a hurricane. SoCal's beaches have a water temperature in summer of around 70 degrees. Which is why hurricanes are almost never seen in SoCal. Hurricanes become tropical storms before they reach metro LA. Today's water temps were under 72 degrees in the LA area.

Encouraging news. Having lived a decade in Florida, hoping the storm doesn't twist and jog into another direction. Never breathe easy until news reports have stated the storm in your area has completely passed. Currently live on the Central California Coastline, so I know how to prepare on a budget although I do have on the wishlist a few more supplies for me and my cat should we need to evacuate. Am sure we will get some strong storm impacts from this storms outerbands. Hoping it doesn't stalk out. Expecting preemptive power outages. And being off grid from a few hours to maybe a few days as it's going to be all on the storm to decide which direction it is going to finally go and if it packs a lot of wind or rain...the right upper quadrant is the strongest part of the storm and will determine which direction in it ultimately go.

California has hills & mountains so that can be dangerous, Florida is mainly flat so we dont get bud slides

Sandbag now. Turn off, unplug all electronics once the storm gets closer. Except maybe the fridge. Do not turn anything back on until news reports advise the storm has not stalled out and moved away. Portable radios are good for tracking storms. Prepping for strong storms can cause exhaustion, anxiety for me. Then the storm. The aftermath of a storm is usually the worst part. Listen carefully to all officials instructions. Be prepared to survive anywwhere from a few days to a week before federal help shows up. There will be helicopters surveying all storm areas after the storm to determine which areas were damaged the most and these areas will be a priority. Now is the time to stay calm and put survival, off grid skills to good use.
