This is the 3rd SL-Q2 that I've modded and it turned out GREAT! I had NO grounding issues and the customer is very happy with the mods. I invested in a few new tools and learned a better way to drill out and install the RCA jacks to prevent any grounding out to the plinth. The cost of the parts was only $37.45 plus two hours of labor. This is a fun hobby for me to do in my spare time. 😁😁
Thanks for posting this guide to these mods. I'm curious how well the platter mod and tonearm wiring reduced noise. Did you take before and after measurements? Audacity has a really nice plot spectrum analysis. My sl-1301 and sl-q303 show rumble noise around 8hz, as expected.
April 2024, love the Video. So hard to find info for my Q2. I only have my phone. I’m not very competent with it. Your modifications of the tone arm & rca & ground plugs are a great idea. Could you tell me ware I could get the parts. Would like to do this my self maybe? Thank you. I’m watching and listening.
I watched this video, actually the only one which talks about the tonearm servicing details, however is very frustrating that exactly that part is missing which shows how exactly you did remove the tonearm gimbal. There are several screws and there is one left on the bottom of the gimbal where that metallic plate is mounted which I cannot open - tipical japanese issue whith those damn philips screws getting their head easily destroyed - looks like they had used some serious screw lock there!
I recently bought and refurbished a SL-D2 and had issues with the tonearm mount screws. What I found worked best and I've used this on a SL-Q3 I just finished recently is to use a new #2 Phillips bit not a used screwdriver. A new #2 bit with good direct pressure gets the screw out unless you've already rounded it out. I mainly had problems with the screw closest to the wires. The other two that are hidden under the plate that's removed weren't an issue. Here's my work on the tonearm and wiring on my SL-D2: th-cam.com/video/Mp5dL9b8-3o/w-d-xo.html
Lovely to see such enthusiasm with these old Technics DD turntables. May I ask your one with the DL103 cartridge you inserted a spacer between it and the headshell presumably to set correct VTA? How did you check and then set the VTA? Many thanks Lee
Yes, it was to set the VTA, but I've since then don't have to use one. I now use platter mats to better adjust my TTs since none of them have adjustable VTA tonearms. After mixing around the various platter mats I have I use the Hudson Hi-Fi Azmuith alignment tool: www.amazon.com/Hudson-Hi-Fi-Turntable-Cartridge-Alignment/dp/B0771Z3XMH?th=1 It works really good I now have all my TTs set properly. With the number of carts I use between my four TTs this tool was a must-have.

Thanks very much for the details. I am retired now this will keep me out of the kitchen .
I recently bought and refurbished a SL-D2 that is very similar to the Q2 when you open it up. I did a very detailed video recently that be of help.
This looks great
