    Thank you for the informative video, you struck the same chord with dried ground orange, will use mine in soaps as an abrasive and cleanser, great for garden and mechanic hands. love the idea of the yoghurt maker infused oils and will try my hand at this with whole star anise, whole allspice, whole cloves, and orange. thank you so much Soapy Oaks Farm.

    I just put my oils mixed with the herbs in the yogurt maker: paprika, ginger, turmeric fine powder that I bought and the hibiscus, jasmine and rhubarb in canola oil. Lavender and calendula in castor oil. All the plants that came whole, I ground them medium in the coffee grinder. Looking forward to tomorrow! I only have 8 jars in my yogurt maker, so I had a few plants left to experiment with.

    I infuse old school. In ancient times they would take what ever they wanted to infuse and put it in the olive oil ( that’s what they used then) in clay pots and they would put them in a cool dark dry place. N they drained it and changed out the botanicals or Herbs then put new ones in. N they did this every 2 weeks for 6-8 weeks. That’s how I do it. I love infused oil’s!

    Other than the scent being lost during the soap making process (I'm not super concerned with scent loss) would you say that the actual skin benefit of the herb infused oil is still pretty strong? I'm focusing mainly on the benefits of the herb rather than the scent.

    • @SoapyOaksFarm
      @SoapyOaksFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Destiny, much depends on the herb, the high PH and reaction with the lye can destroy many of the natural benefits, however using them in tictures, salves, lotions and other leave on products will preserve more of those benefits

    Do your soaps hold their fragrance better by using the infused oils? I understand that the infused oils are more subtle, but I’m talking about holding the scent better with infused oils as opposed to losing the scent more easily with essential oils? Maybe combining some essential oil and infused oil? In soaps?

    • @SoapyOaksFarm
      @SoapyOaksFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, good question, some botanicals do have better staying power than others for sure, though the vast majority will lose much of their scent going through saponification. For instance a soap I am working on for tomorrow, it has Cardamom infused oil and I am combining a lesser amount of Cardamom essential oil to help boost the scent.

    I live in a cold climate with very little sun (as opposed to where I am from and where I could have access to tons of herbs and roses to dry!), and I don't own a dehydrater, would you reccomend drying herbs and orange peel in a very low oven? I was also wondering whether it is ok to use the peth with the peel since bitterness is not much of a consideration here?

Many folks use olive oil and I too use it sometimes, much depends on how I am going to use the infusions, for instance if for a massage oil, I will use something light like Jojoba, Almond, Apricot Kernel, but if for soap, Olive, Avocado, even Castor will work.

    • @SoapyOaksFarm
      @SoapyOaksFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Tab & Ken, welcome. It's true that the molecules that create the fragrance do mute in soaps, that is why I generally add a complimentary essential oil to cold process soaps, however I find the scents carry over very nicely for salves, balms, in fact I have a cardamom salve using my own infused oils that is very nicely scented and spicy. I can't speak to what others on facebook may or may not be referring to, I am only sharing my own experiences. Thanks so much
