    The USS Independence was a CVL, a "Light Carrier", made from a Cleveland-class light cruiser-hull and was the namesake of the CVL class [ th-cam.com/video/I53dLB8l_uc/w-d-xo.html ]. As with the "Jeep" or "Escort Carriers" (CVE's), the Navy needed all the airplane carriers they could get their hands onto in the Pacific, so they made CVL's from light-cruiser hulls and CVE's from merchant hulls. During WW2, the US Navy had 9 Independence-class light carriers and 2 Saipan-class successor-class light carriers.

    • @patrickmccrann991
      @patrickmccrann991 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both Saipan class ships were completed after the war. They served during the Korean War and one, the Wright, was converted to a communications ship that served until the early 1970s.

    There were quite a few ships by the same name, i.e., the USS Independence, but I assume this one was CVL-22, as I understand CVL-22 was sunk in 1951 out by the Farallon Islands west of San Francisco. I used to fish out by the Farallons and understand there are several shipwrecks below out around those islands. There's also a lot of sharks out there, they took my bait a few times, as did a pinniped!

    What a crappy feature - music and narration are like that of a kids show or commerical. Pretty misleading when you consider this ship was involved in the testing of nuclear weapons. Which are perfectlly capable of eradicating humanity, for all who didn't know.
