Allow me to explain Step 1, in slightly more graphic language. I had to be beaten to a phucking pulp by alcohol, AND have enough seriously negative consequences in my life, that I could no longer live with the guy in the mirror. I'm not saying it HAS to be that way for everyone, but I've attended enough meetings to know that few people will "concede to their innermost selves", without the "pitiful, and incomprehensible demoralization"! Also known as a "severe ass-kicking"! (Physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally.)
