There is actually no such thing as 'free speech'. Speech comes with responsibility, enshrined within British law. No-one is free to libel or slander, if spoken, anyone. As a former journalist of 30 years, I had to make sure anything I wrote conformed to law. And in those days the 'holy trinity' of newsrooms was fair, accurate and contemporaneous. We seem to have lost the fair and accurate bit.
Actually lots of people are free to Libel others if the recipient of the defamation doesn't have the thousands to bring a legal case. But I get your point. Jamal could only sue Yaxley because it was pro bono if I remember correctly.

It's interesting. This man who isn't affected by this possible crime is suggesting that it be treated as if it's littering. He then decries how damaging the possible crime is to society. So which is it? Is it ok? Or is it a bad thing? And we are not speaking of a victimless crime. Inciting racial violence IS a crime here.
Attempting to stop escalation? We know how a series of untruths published on social media can cause riots, so I for one welcome a police visit to explain that you can't lie when that is likely to become the next big lie.
Inciting hate against a particular group is a crime and always has been. She claimed police were 'jew haters', which is a lie, if she doesn't like being called out, she should have the Telegraph fact check, before she publishes.

But equally, the group of people behind the this flag from Pakistan is also being accused of being "jew haters". So Pearson could be guilty of race hate in two different but related ways. Yes, you have free speech. But speech has effects and those effects have consequences and you also have responsibility for your actions - including speech.
Also the right to free speech doesn't come without consequences. I for one am very pleased when someone, who's output is printed on national press, is held accountable for lying - if indeed this is the case.

Context: In November 2024, Pearson was visited at home by Essex Police asking her to undergo a voluntary interview after a complaint that she had incited racial hatred with a tweet posted in November 2023. During a period of scrutiny on British policing of pro-Palestinian protests during the Israel-Hamas war, Pearson had posted a photo of Greater Manchester Police officers standing besides supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party waving the party's flag. However, despite the flag including the word "Pakistan", she called the flagbearers "Jew haters" and misidentified the officers as Metropolitan Police officers, citing an incident where that service had not met with an Israeli-advocacy group. These errors were corrected by a Community Note and Pearson deleted the tweet. After the visit, Pearson wrote a Telegraph column criticizing the incident and saying that the police had said it was a non-crime hate incident, which garnered public sympathy from right-wing political figures.
If she was given notice and asked to come in for an interview, she would have published a page in the Telegraph before she'd even been interviewed. Essex Police couldn't win.
She wrote that british police were jew haters. Since when is insuting police okay, especially by a journalist. And farage called them 'plods,' rather than criticising her. Tomorrow he'll claim to be pro police, if it stirs up trouble with particular groups.
I'm sure if she gets suspended by the Telegraph pending investigation all of her colleagues will... ...turn up for work the next day and carry on as normal...🤔
This is a perfect example of why there is the need for a fully independent regulator for the written press, as well as more teeth for OFCOM to deal with Social Media & rogue broadcasters such as GB News (now there's an oxymoron if ever there was one).
Boris introduced the Online safety Bill, and put Ofcom in charge, with investigating online offensive messages and content. Ofcom are fully independent of government. So it's ironic that Starmer is being blamed, when it was Boris.
The Police say the were acting on a complaint from a member of the Public so are they duty bound to investigate. Initially the incident was reported in the Press with only one side of the story available. If the Police have video evidence of their conversation with Ms Pearson surely that’s pretty conclusive. Why have Politicians come out with one sided comments before they knew the full story.
No mention that the political party of the flag in question, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, believes that Israel shouldn't exist. Doesn't seem to be very friendly party to the Jews. No mention either of the persecution Jews have suffered in Pakistan. Outstanding journalism!

The best defence is to come out fighting and do not allow these agents of the right to go unchallenged. Free speech is great and should be protected but with all actions there are consequences which can be expensive.
And you would never undermine the police to promote your agenda...we need more like you!😊😂
She's obviously physically, and mentally, incapable of mouthing the word "Sorry"; if it's proved that she is in the wrong here, and wilfully lying about it, she must face a stiff financial penalty - and never referred to her as a journalist in the future.

It should be a crime to deliberately lie in the press.

The bigger question is how can a Telegraph “journalist” not know the difference between the Manchester and Met Police forces. How can she not know the difference between Pakistan and Palestine. If she can’t get this right how can she be trusted on anything she writes.
Around 2:07 Fraser Knight said NCHIs were recorded to stop "more serious crimes" being committed!!??.......If a "NON crime" is not a a crime, why does he say that? This is treating a NON crime as a less serious crime??......This gobbledegook needs to cease!
Either a crime is a crime or there is NO crime. A NCHI , by definition is NOT a crime.- It is not a less serious crime - it is a NON crime!!
The BBC has journalistic values? Now that is naive!
The best outcome would be for her to be charged for a crime, which I fully believe she committed. I have seen the picture in question.
I wonder if Kemi Badenoch has considered that she may now be included as a "jew hater" simply by being of the "wrong colour".

Context:
In November 2024, Pearson was visited at home by Essex Police asking her to undergo a voluntary interview after a complaint that she had incited racial hatred with a tweet posted in November 2023.
