    I started building these kits in 62 when I was 10 years old. This was my Cocaine habit! I couldn't stop building the AMT, MPC, and Johan kits! $1.50 and $2.00. Then buying the Testors glue and Pactra little bottles of paint and brushes. The local hobby shops knew me by my first name!

    • @carshowreporter
      @carshowreporter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was doing well. With these collectables, all it takes is 1 customer to sell a kit. The problem is, once he sells an item, he has to hunt down another, if he can find one. Then, what will the price be??? Restocking is the hardest part of selling out of production items.

  • @billhershkowitz5759
    @billhershkowitz5759 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This guy has some great stuff but his prices are in the stratosphere

    • @carshowreporter
      @carshowreporter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point, Bill!! The collectable business has a few, tough, problems to surmount. First finding a shrinking stock of inventory. Second, once sold, how much will you have to pay to " replace " the kit...if you can find another? It is a very interesting business! Remember, there are people who just want a particular kit and the few, extra bucks is well worth spending instead of searching for another year. Some people enjoy the hunt as part of the joy of collecting, others just want the model, NOW!!!

    • @carshowreporter
      @carshowreporter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Crushing!!! Many of us are in the same position as you. Personally, I have a basic rule, don't pay more for the model than one pays for the actual car. I learned an important lesson many years ago. At a dealership I was working for got in a used Ford GT ( original . I do not remember if it was a MkIV , though ) They priced it at $140,000 at a time when they were selling for $80,000. The sales manager asked me if I had $140k in the bank, who I buy the Ford? I said " No, I would buy another house ". Then he asked if I had 1 million just sitting in a bank account, would I buy the GT? Thinking the money would hardly be missed, I answered yes. 2 days later the GT was sold. There are enough people with " disposable " income. There are limited opportunities to buy rare pieces. Thanks for bringing up an important point for most of us.

    Nice Video, Pam! Boy did you ever get my memories rollin'...1st car kit: '59 Buick Convert...built it with skirts, continental kit and flame decals. (I was 11). Still going today...the new kits are nice but I found my niche...restoring glue bombs!
    Buying at estate sales for $10-15, stripping paint and painting with an airbrush. More work than a kit, but more fun for me.

      Kids are not the one's buying these vintage kits. New kits, which include many, contemporary cars appealing to those who grew up with them, sell for $20 - $40. We may cringe at prices like that, but, $4 in 1965 is equal to about $33 today. Those little bottles of Testors paint sell for $2 today, a can of spay paint, $5 - $6 and glue, $3. These prices are low averages of online prices. Thanks for your concern in passing our passion along to the younger generation, Wayne. May I suggest, if and when you give to a toys for tots, give a car or truck. You can buy cool Matchbox car assortments for under $10.
