Is more fair and very close to me. Same with the line
"Is it easy to live inside yourself?"
While it is almost as good as "... inside the rope", I empathize KEXP version much more. And they lost the rhyme with the "Everybody got nowhere to go" line in album version.
Anyway, both versions are good and I never get tired to listen to both of them!

Umm there is guy in the band named Bryce Dessner.
He really is a class act though, for me the percussion is really what draws me in to each album

I listen to the album version on spotify. But god damn i always get stuck on this version, I just love the quitar, the drums and all the little details that this version has to offer, Beyond perfect!

I love The National and this song is beautifully written and performed ...you can see how Matt and the band really care about each other and the music and are putting their heart and soul into their performance up close. That is what makes good music something that you can relate to and love.
I am loving the studio version more, it's so beautiful.
The cadence of this song is so unique and haunting. Even the backup vocalist is having difficulties synchronizing his harmonies with the the lead singer because of it.

This is so so so so SO much better than the album version. I genuinely am not understanding what Matt thinks Stables and Tindle add to the song that wasn't there (if not better) already, but a lot of decisions on the new album have left me scratching my head as I try to enjoy the core of what it is.

So, the reason I prefer the studio version is because of the change in lyrics: "Underwater you're almost free/If you want to be alone, come with me". As someone who attempted suicide by drowning, that hits home a little harder than the lyrics in this version.

Btw, it’s so badass how you can see Matt find and place the lyrics in front of him before the first verse starts - hasn’t even learned his fucking own song yet, even though it’s pretty much album ready/album worthy and a top tier NTL tune. Some of the non-LP songs they’ve released (Wake Up Your Saints, Exile Vilify, You Were a Kindness, Morning Dew, etc.), while decent and never mediocre, definitely to me seem like either they aren’t LP worthy (in term of overall quality) or are in need of some kind of improvement/reworking. But Rylan, particularly this recording, is honestly good enough as is. It wouldn’t hurt to just clean it up a tad but even that’s not critical. A great and talented band on top of their form. Hope the guys can keep this streak going for another 10 years. Cheers.

I love this version of the song, the album version is good, but I like the outro on this one better, like, it could have been an overpowering guitar solo but they leave it pared back and restrain it to join the other instruments. And that drumming, oh my, that drumming.....
