Why is it when a great jumper comes along in our sport that people try to denigrate them by saying their skating skills or their artistry is bad? They said it about Midori Ito, Elvis Stojko and they're trying to do the same to Ilya. There was nothing wrong with either Ito's or Stojko's skating skills, just like there's nothing wrong with Ilya's. I have always thought that the so-called experts simply say that in order to detract from a skater's technical prowess. Ilya has great, fast spins and a lovely positions in them. He has lovely deep edges, he has a gorgeous landing position on his jumps, he often enters jumps from difficult entries like the 3 axel here from a spread eagle or his 4 axel from a difficult counter turn. He has passion, he has style and nobody is ever gonna tell me this SP is lacking in artistry and choreo. Give the lad a break because he's the most exciting prospect I've seen in our sport for decades. By the way, I'm not American nor am I Russian. I'm from lil' ole' England across the pond, been skating since 1974 and I think he's great.
