    LANDING IN FIRE !
The use of the F.I.D.O system during World War II was primarily intended to assist pilots during adverse weather conditions, such as fog, to improve visibility for landing.
The F.I.D.O. (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation) system was installed in a number of airfields . The system was developed to disperse fog on Royal Air Force (RAF) airfields, especially during critical moments when visibility was crucial for aircraft operations
"Force F.I.D.O" the team that solved the problem of fog dispersal, numbered about 500 in all ,headed by Mr Geoffrey Lloyd, former Minister in charge of Petroleum Warfare , and including in its ranks , scientists ,industrialists, meteorologists and service officers and groundcrew at times they almost prayed for fog to put their ideas to the test !
The F.I.D.O system involved pumping large amounts of fuel down a pipe laid alongside the runway typically petrol and diesel then igniting it, creating a long runway perimeter wall of fire . The heat generated by the flames would lift the fog and improve visibility for landing aircraft. This system was primarily used by the RAF during the war to enable essential operations even in unfavorable weather conditions
    R.A.F Graveley F.I.D.O system installed.
RAF Graveley, also known as Royal Air Force Graveley, was a former Royal Air Force station located near the village of Graveley 5 miles south of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, England. During World War II, it served as a bomber station and was a part of the No. 8 Group Bomber Command. The station was operational from 1941 until 1946
Key units stationed at RAF Graveley during its operational period include:
No. 35 Squadron RAF: This squadron operated Avro Lancaster bombers and was involved in strategic bombing missions over enemy territory during World War II.
No. 97 Squadron RAF: Another squadron equipped with Avro Lancaster bombers, it also participated in strategic bombing missions as part of Bomber Command.
No. 7 Squadron RAF: This squadron operated Short Stirling bombers, which were used for various bombing operations during the war.
No. 692 Squadron RAF: A specialist unit formed in March 1944, it was tasked with testing and operating the new De Havilland Mosquito bombers, which were used for precision attacks and reconnaissance missions.
While the fog dispersal system itself was deployed the pilots could take some comfort that if they caught sight of the flames through the fog they would see the fiery runway and their chances of survival ,all thanks to F.I.D.O, were greatly improved .
These pilots faced numerous life-threatening situations, including aerial combat with enemy aircraft, anti-aircraft fire (flak), and mechanical failures, among others. The constant exposure to danger and the loss of fellow pilots and friends was something they just dealt with .To them landing on a runway perimeter fire was just another one of those hazards.
If you feel we make worthy educational and entertaining work and you want to perhaps help push us along, hit the "Superthanks" button and buy us the price of a cup of coffee or a cold drink ,we do get thirsty over here in Blighty as them computers crunch all that beautiful aircraft modelling , rendering and maths sound design and original scores for our vids , that makes one heck of a hot room,so the price of a drink would be very nicely welcomed and appreciated :) Have a great day everyone and watch out for more animations !
At SpitfireCGI we create all of our original aviation animations, sound design and composed music scores for our projects in-house.

Brilliant work as usual - sound design is excellent. A unique look at this marvellous precursor to modern landing lights/PAPI system. The historic photos at the end are are nice touch.

Thank you for your comment P.R.V ,we wanted to place R.A.F Graveley and F.I.D.O. squarely in the middle of all this ,as it was a very important airfield in WW2 .So we used new techniques to make this happen!

That’s incredible! My home town was the location of RAF Carnaby, which had FIDO installed along with a massive three lane emergency runway. That runway is now an industrial park.

Thank you glad you liked the vid .RAF Carnaby had F.I.D.O too that's great that sounds like it was a big operational airfield aswell .Sad when they dissappear into housing or industrial estates barely leaving a mark of how important they were. These little vids may help to keep their memory alive in a time when everything was at stake.

Fantastic, i used to play in the control tower in my youth and Graveley also took part in a film, named 'Robbery'. Well done all.

That is great Ivan ,really hoped the vid would find someone from Graveley and then be seen in its rightful place and you've just confirmed that with your memories of the Control Tower...Perfect!

We don't think F.I.D.O is that well know in the role it played of saving pilots and aircrews lives. .Hopefully this little vid helps address that!

Welcome back bomber crews from there night missions over France and Germany as well and with our allied forces i do not think we would have won world War two

So true Allied forces were pivotal in the air, especially the Polish, Czechs ,Canadians, New Zealand Australians and the Americans and the others we would not of made it without them all.
