    love this, and hearing the correct pronunciation means a lot. So many language learning courses either can't pronounce Irish words properly or just do not even attempt it. Thanks for all you do sir!

    Hello!
    So glad to have found you because Irish English pronunciations are very hard.
    For context, I work as a Linguist and one of the things I am tasked with is adding Irish place names to a Lexicon.
    I'd really like to do justice to Irish names and would love if you could help since there's very little data available on Irish prons.
    I was hoping to get an idea of how Carrownree is pronounced. Also didn't see Sligo county be mentioned in this video! I have lots more Irish place names to add, so I'm hoping you respond to this comment!

    Awesome video. I’ve been trying to learn the language, after discovering from a DNA test I’m half Irish. It’s a very difficult language for me coming from a place where most people speak English and Spanish. Thanks for the knowledge you are sharing and be safe during these crazy times !

    I think Tóin le Gaoithe is absolutely descriptive. It's the name of a mountain in Wicklow, on one side of the the Wicklow Gap. It means " Arse to the Wind". It's been anglicised as Tonlegee, as in Tonlegee Rd.

    I loved this video! I always hated the name bangor because I thought it was given by the English from the bangor in wales. I’m so happy to know it has its own Irish language origins

      @@LearnIrish It's actually the road signs that triggered my interest for the Irish language: their confronted me with an orthography like a riddle I could not solve without digging a little deeper. And here I am. Still on that road, still learning.
      So good to /hear/ somebody unriddle some of these placenames!
      Thanks for your channel!

    Dia dhuit Dane! That's really a great video! You threw a new light on the origin of town's name. Names of most of the towns and cities are anglicized sadly! I'm from County Mayo whose real name is Contae Mhaigh Eo meaning "Plain of the yew trees". Really an outstanding video! Good job! Físeán gan íoc i ndáiríre! Blair mhaith!

    Fun fact: Naas (Nás) used to be called (and sometimes still is called) Nás na Ríogh, meaning assembly of the the kings

  • @eoinmackay2060
    @eoinmackay2060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The full Irish name for Naas is ‘Nás na Ríogh’ - which means ‘Assembly/Meeting/Gathering of the Kings’

      Known as the fort of the 2 broken locks or fetters, Patrick was added later to mark the connection between St. Patrick and this place.
