    Excellent video. Just discovered the importance of the quadratic formula when trying to solve for x in a more "obvious" algebraic fashion - manipulating values on each side of equation until the variable is isolated... "Double-you tee eff broughe, why isn't this working out" - I thought. Then realized the entire expression ax^2 + bx^1 + cx^0 represents the product of two factored terms, (x + d)(x + e). This can be quite difficult to work out when a and/or b coefficients are values such as 63sin(pi/3), etc.
    In these cases, where determining factors in a more basic manner is difficult, the great power of the quadratic formula is realized.

    To get to standard form from the general form (ax^2+bx+c), use these:
    h=-b/(2a) and k=f(h)

    In 7th grade, my teacher made all of her advanced classes learn off of Khan. Legit all we did was learn from and even do our work from it. It's good and all, but some stuff was buggy, (people had their data reset), and sometimes the vids we were dependent on were a bit confusing. I don't blame Khan for this, but in my opinion they might want to look into different ways of teaching the same thing.

    what did he do to the 2 in the last example? when he divided by the negative sic from the negative twelve he just forgot about the two. wha happein?

    • @scorpion3705
      @scorpion3705 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Mentic He divided all the terms by 2 to simplify, that's why the -12 became a -6, and the -6 became a -3, and the 2 square roots of 39 become one square root of 39, which is why there is no 2
